Sewer main snaking

I would definitely recommend them to a friend. After a disappointing experience with the first tradesman that came to snake my main sewer line, Mr. Rooter came back with little hesitation to redo the job under warranty. The second tradesman was orders of magnitude better than the first. He actually cleared the clog in my drain, he deliberately protected my floors when moving through my house, and he put my toilet back on straight - all unlike the first tradesman did. He also informed me that the first no longer worked for the company. I wouldn't have recommended them after the first service call out, but after coming back to do the job right, I now know it wasn't the company that let me down - just one bad apple.

Replacement of entire sewage system

My pipes on my old house recently clogged, when I called in mr rooter to snake the line twice they told me the first five feet needed to be replaced. They came in jack hammered a hole in my basement and then left after they said the whole line needs to be done. I paid them over 3000 for two snake jobs and a hole in my basement floor. The original plumber said they could do the rest of the job in two days, that was 5 days ago and they wont take any on my calls. I have no sewage for nearly a week

Service

I am a new homeowner, and have a fairly old house... I had someone come in to unclog the kitchen pipes. I also asked for the pipes to be replaced under kitchen sink as they were old, rusty and I had a double pea trap which I thought weird. He arrived and augered the pipe once, he did not replace anything, he said the piping was 'fine'.

He was so busy looking for a tip, and telling me his story of woe and how plumbers dont make any money, that I really just wanted him out of my house.

When he left the drain was working, so I said 'whatever' and moved on.

A little over a month later I have clogged drains..again. I call up Mr Rooter, explained what happened, and was told 'too bad' .. warranty is up after 30 days.

I called in another plumber, who did the job properly. The amount of crud and grease and yuck that was NOT done by Mr Rooter was ridiculous. Also, the piping that was "fine" was replaced by the other company as the main pipe was only attached by silicone... that doesnt sound 'fine' to me.

I was informed that the price I paid should have at the very least had 3-4 times augering with cold water running to clear properly, which was not done. I am NOT impressed that I had to pay $330 for NOTHING. Extremely poor service.

I sent an email advising Mr Rooter of same, and again, there is nothing they can do aboout it.. Would NOT recommend this company.

Toilet Clog/New toilet install

I have a mixed review for Mr. Rooter.

We called Mr Rooter because I had rather stupidly, managed to drop the lid to my mouthwash into the toilet, while it was flushing.... this was to a costco sized mouthwash so, it was a BIG lid. The first technician that came out gave me an estimate of $465. He said he would need to auger the toilet and since the lid was so big he didn't beleive he could get it out without detaching the toilet. (it was like 200 for the auger and 265 for the toilet detach and reset). I was shocked but he said this was the only way. I left him to work.

15 minutes later (maybe even less) he called me into the bathroom and said there was no clog. Flushed 2 pieces of toilet paper down and said there was no clog. He used a hand auger, never felt anything but figured he may have "shook something loose" and all fixed. $225. For 15 minutes. Well...

After he left we went to use the toilet, I put a larger wad of paper down the toilet thinking I wanted to be SURE it was working before actually "using" it. It wasn't working. Water rises high, slowly drains and paper left behind.

Office staff was awesome and said someone would be by in 1-2 hours. It was after 830 when Kirby came and he said it was clogged (shocker) and he actually tried for about 30 minutes to get to the lid and nothing. He then said that I could have the toilet detached/reset for 265. BUT, he then stated that my toilet was 25 years old and I could replace it with just a basic toilet (comperable to what I had but new) for about $350. Looking back that really ticks me off because I think if the price of a new toilet (installed and taking the old one) is less than fixing a 25 year old toilet, that should be the FIRST option presented. I would have never agreed to the original work of $465 to salvave a toilet that clearly wasn't worth salvaging, had I known I could have a new one for LESS

HOWEVER, despite the lack of information from the first gentleman, Kirby exceeded all of my expectation. He was willing to replace my toilet and work until after midnight doing so. Althernatively, we worked out a great price with a discount on the second toilet (decided to do both) as well as a thourough check with a camera into the main line (free of charge) to ensure that it was clear. He installed the toilets the next day, he was METICULOUS in his work area (booties over shoes, tools on top of clean towels he brought, etc), and clearly WANTED to do a good job for us. Checked the toilet several times (flushing) to make sure that there was no water leaking and then after all that he did a free plumbing check of our entire home and provided recomendations.

So. Mixed review. Kirby was great, and had I dealt with him in the beginning, this may have been a 10 star experience. BUT since I wound up spending an extra $250 to unclog what was deemed an old, tired, busted toilet that even without the clog was finished, I am a little annoyed. I think Mr Rooter does a great job of providing an estimate for services before commencing work. BUT I would have been a much happier customer if they provided me with ALL of my options from the beginning instead of soaking my $225, then another $265 and then saying that I could have had a brand new toilet for LESS than that.

Replacement of sump pump

We hired this company to replace our sump pump. We did have a problem after the fact- a valve blew out. We called their emergency line, they had someone out in an hour with a temporary fix and then a plumber came back the next day and fixed the part. We were concerned about dirt etc that got into our pump so they are replacing the whole thing for us. Very good customer service and we got several quotes, they were the fairest price.

toilet installed and 1' of pipe replaced

we had to replace part of our pipe to instal our new toilet and when calling about pricing they could only tell us that they charge an $80 dispatch fee and couldn't quote without someone coming over and charging that. We did have someone go above and beyond to find out pricing for us which was appreciated. The instal guys took quite some time do complete job but since it wasn't per hour didn't bother us as much on the wallet in that respect just effected being able to go to work. They did a poor caulking job around the toilet and I don't think that was supposed to be done as we've been told it catches bacteria.

Hot Water Tank

Our hot water tank blew up and we contacted Mr. Rooter to come out as they offer free estimates. We called on a Tuesday but they said they could not get someone out there until Wednesday afternoon. They put us on a cancellation list in case someone else cancelled and they could get us in. We received a call back an hour later saying they had someone avaliable to come within the hour. The person they sent was very professional. He took a look at the tank and made suggestions. We did not end up buying a hot water tank through them but would refer them to anyone looking for a plumber and would call them again.

Our water faucet in the bathroom was not working properly. The hot water will not turn off and it trickle for a few month until it finally just runs. We could not turn the knob to shut off the water. We had to call the plumber and they were friendly and professional. They arrived at our home within the hour and fixed the problem. It turned out the little rubber ring needed to be replace. Phew!

Garberator and dishwasher repair

So my wife and I finished our walk through of our rental property and we realized there were a few things that needed fixing. We needed to get our garberator (sp?) and dishwasher repaired. Being sort of new at the rental property thing we called Mr. Rooter plumbing. Initially they seemed very friendly and helpful. The price of the garberator was very high but we figured we would listen to the guy. The guy tried to push us on the idea of signing up for their preferred member plan that would give us part and service discounts. We were still hesitant. He said that if we signed up for it he would fix the dishwasher free of charge. We decided to go for it. After the man was done, and we had paid for it, he went on to try and push all these other repairs/upgrades and would not take no for an answer. Basically it had taken a while for him to get all this work done so we left our renters with him as we could not stay there all day with him. He took it upon himself to nose around every square inch of the place and try to find things to sell us on. I contacted the management of the place and they went on to try and defend the intrusive behaviour. The day after these two repairs had taken place our renters called us to say that the dishwasher was not working. This was back in October. It is now March. Regular phone calls to try and get them to hold up to their end of the deal have resulted in nothing. They always say they will get someone to return our message and take care of the issue. If you value integrity and don't want unnecessary head aches in your life I would strongly suggest against dealing with this company. There are many options out there and I would hate to see another person deal with such a bad business.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Complete the work they say they will do. Fix unproperly done repairs. Not dodge phone calls from unhappy customers. Not creep around people's places and try to upsell them on everything they can imagine.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Avoid dealing with this company at all cost.

Water Tank repair

The Mr.Rooter staff were initially helpful and courteous. They arranged a time and showed up on time. The repair was technically difficult. It was a simple part replacement (thermocouple), which the plumber stated would be done in 10 minutes. He took about 30 minutes to complete the repair. He had some difficulty removing the original part which probably led to the error of inadvertantly dislodging the gas line. This was not discovered until well after he had left.
Gas was leaking all night long, and in the morning smelled very strong. I contacted the office and they said they would try and dispatch the plumber before his shift started, which I thought seemed appropriate. Then, when I got home, I found out that Mr. Rooter had called back and stated that they never touched the gas, therefore, they were not responsible. They also stated that it was normal for some gas to leak for 24 to 48 hours, and that we should wait until then before calling back.
Not willing to let more gas pool in the basement, which would be circulated into the ventilation, we turned off the hot water heater and called Atco gas, who confirmed that there was a leak in the gas line. Atco stated that the gas line had been dislodged and a small leak was apparent. He was able to fix this and thankfully we have no more gas.
The problem I have with Mr. Rooter is that they refused to own up to the possibility that they might have caused the gas leak. They still are working on an appliance that requires gas. I would have expected that they would have checked that there were no leaks, or at least investigate what happened.
Never going to recommend or go with Mr. Rooter!

What could this company do to improve their services?
Instead of flat out denying that they are responsible, they should listen to the customer and come and investigate. Do not lie about having the smell of gas around for 24 to 48 hrs. If I understand it correctly, if a gas appliance is properly installed, you should never smell any gas - anywhere.
