Toilet Clog/New toilet install

I have a mixed review for Mr. Rooter.

We called Mr Rooter because I had rather stupidly, managed to drop the lid to my mouthwash into the toilet, while it was flushing.... this was to a costco sized mouthwash so, it was a BIG lid. The first technician that came out gave me an estimate of $465. He said he would need to auger the toilet and since the lid was so big he didn't beleive he could get it out without detaching the toilet. (it was like 200 for the auger and 265 for the toilet detach and reset). I was shocked but he said this was the only way. I left him to work.

15 minutes later (maybe even less) he called me into the bathroom and said there was no clog. Flushed 2 pieces of toilet paper down and said there was no clog. He used a hand auger, never felt anything but figured he may have "shook something loose" and all fixed. $225. For 15 minutes. Well...

After he left we went to use the toilet, I put a larger wad of paper down the toilet thinking I wanted to be SURE it was working before actually "using" it. It wasn't working. Water rises high, slowly drains and paper left behind.

Office staff was awesome and said someone would be by in 1-2 hours. It was after 830 when Kirby came and he said it was clogged (shocker) and he actually tried for about 30 minutes to get to the lid and nothing. He then said that I could have the toilet detached/reset for 265. BUT, he then stated that my toilet was 25 years old and I could replace it with just a basic toilet (comperable to what I had but new) for about $350. Looking back that really ticks me off because I think if the price of a new toilet (installed and taking the old one) is less than fixing a 25 year old toilet, that should be the FIRST option presented. I would have never agreed to the original work of $465 to salvave a toilet that clearly wasn't worth salvaging, had I known I could have a new one for LESS

HOWEVER, despite the lack of information from the first gentleman, Kirby exceeded all of my expectation. He was willing to replace my toilet and work until after midnight doing so. Althernatively, we worked out a great price with a discount on the second toilet (decided to do both) as well as a thourough check with a camera into the main line (free of charge) to ensure that it was clear. He installed the toilets the next day, he was METICULOUS in his work area (booties over shoes, tools on top of clean towels he brought, etc), and clearly WANTED to do a good job for us. Checked the toilet several times (flushing) to make sure that there was no water leaking and then after all that he did a free plumbing check of our entire home and provided recomendations.

So. Mixed review. Kirby was great, and had I dealt with him in the beginning, this may have been a 10 star experience. BUT since I wound up spending an extra $250 to unclog what was deemed an old, tired, busted toilet that even without the clog was finished, I am a little annoyed. I think Mr Rooter does a great job of providing an estimate for services before commencing work. BUT I would have been a much happier customer if they provided me with ALL of my options from the beginning instead of soaking my $225, then another $265 and then saying that I could have had a brand new toilet for LESS than that.

Approximate cost of services:
$1,000.00
