True North Underpinning

We purchased our home 5 years ago which had a finished basement with ceilings at a max height of 6'. We knew that we wanted to underpin and had several companies offer quotes, but we weren't comfortable with any of them until we had Daniel from True North come by to assess the property and offer a quote. Daniel was there for over an hour during his initial visit and took the time to explain the process to us, offer ideas, and point out where we may encounter issues during the process. He was incredibly thorough and personable which made us feel at ease. The quote he provided was not the lowest, but it was very detailed and included considerations for issues that sometimes come up during the underpinning process and estimates for what it may cost if we ran into those issues.

The work was slightly delayed as we had to jump through an extra hoop with the city due to our property being on ravine land but once we got the permit from the city, Daniel's team was able to start work almost immediately.

From day 1 the team was professional, responsible and courteous. They were on time every single day, and were kind to our young kids and our somewhat anxious dog. We were nervous about the process, but it became clear quickly that the team were experts in what they do, and they were always happy to have us come downstairs and explain what they were doing.

Our house is >100 years old so we anticipated running into issues during the process, but in the end the only unforeseen issue was related to lead water pipes which were quickly identified and replaced by the team. The anticipated timeline for the project was 4-6 weeks and they finished in exactly 4 weeks.

A professional and hard-working team, A+ customer service, work completed on budget and ahead of schedule. I don't know why you'd look anywhere else if you're planning an underpinning project!

Extremely happy with the work done by True North over the course of our underpinning project and would highly recommend them for any job. From the start, Daniel provided the most comprehensive quote, the clearest plan and was transparent about what we may encounter during the dig in our area. Had our basement flood from a big storm this summer. We went with Dan and his team from True North Underpinning because of all their positive reviews and we couldn't be happier. Fair pricing and quality work. We were kept up to date as the job was being done and was completed on time and budget.

Work was completed over a year ago and we are very happy with the results. I believe True North is the top underpinning company in the GTA, so I expected their price to be much higher than all other companies, but they were on par with everyone else. So it was a no brainer to go with them! We didn't even know that extending our basement was possible but we couldn't believe how 'easily' they did it. Or at least, they made it look very easy (they had to breakdown the back wall of our basement and hand dig about 300 sq ft while supporting the weight of the house above). Daniel was a pleasure to deal with- always very responsive if we had questions. Aubrey was the BEST- so friendly and kind- all the guys felt like family at the end of the project. Also, the trades (HVAC and plumbing) they deal with are amazing too- they were the most knowledgeable from all the trades we dealt with when we were finishing the basement. The communication from True North cannot be beat. Dan, Josh, and Matthew all made sure that any questions we had were quickly answered and helped explained the process along the way. We pivoted from benchpinning to underpinning once work began, and we felt that Dan empowered us to make the decision for ourselves and provided his insights and thoughts which were immensely valuable and helpful and we are so thankful he did. During the project, they provided us with updates and timelines and we always had full transparency into what was being done and when. From the get-go, I was impressed and appreciated the honesty and courteous nature Daniel and his team provided and we had complete trust in his team.

The execution of work from True North is world-class. Everything is so organized and accounted for that it was a marvel to watch them execute with precision and tact daily (and extremely satisfying to see all that dirt be removed). On top of that, they are the most punctual team that we could set our clocks to their arrival.

Having undergone underpinning with a 9 month old at home was an unexpectedly pleasant experience. My baby slept like a rock through it all and he enjoyed seeing Matthew and Gabriel (and others) throughout the weeks. The team was extremely couteous knowing we had an infant at home and was so friendly that by the end of the project we really missed having them around. It also speaks volumes to the character of the company when we ran into Dan in the neighbourhood, on site at another house, and both my son and dog were so happy to see him and he thoughtfully asked how the rest of our basement renovation was going.

Beyond the scope of work that was done, I am so thankful for Dan and his guidance thorughout our basement renovation project and the transfer of knowledge his team provided when we worked with the next contracting group to finish the basement. I would 1000% recommend True North to anyone considering his services and would not hesitate to ever reach out to him again.

We had the True North Underpinning crew come in to underpin our basement. The crew should up everyday on time and where very polite and respectful. We couldn't be happier with the final result and are enjoying our newly renovated basement.

Daniel, Stavros and the team at True North Underpinning worked on our house in East York to underpin our basement. Right from the beginning of scope discussions to estimate to execution was flawless and precise. The team was clear with their communications and setting expectations right along the full journey. The job was finished quicker than we had hoped expected and done within budget. Amazing crew that was very mindful and took care every step of the way.

Highly recommended, especially in the east York area where the soil can be tricky (sandy) to work on.

I honestly don't know why you would look elsewhere if you need to have underpinning done.
We had a semi with an unfinished basement. The stairs to the basement are narrow, and the basement itself was only 6'5' high (and lower in other places). We also had a crawl space under an extension to our house. We wanted to underpin it all and have a walkout so we could move normal-sized appliances and furniture in. We previously had a terrible experience with waterproofers that had dug under our foundation and caused structural damage, so I was very concerned about getting it right.
Daniel was awesome from the start. The work and the costs were all set out clearly. No surprises. The cost was roughly in line with other quotes, and without the crawlspace and walkout, it would have dropped considerably. Concerns were addressed promptly and fairly, which is key. Josh, Keith and the rest of the team were clearly experienced, and easy to get along with. Given the walkout and the crawlspace, this was a lengthy job, but they kept at it virtually every day. The few external trades that needed to come in were scheduled efficiently to keep things moving.

I couldn't be happier with True North Underpinning. We had a different underpinning company with our other house 5 years ago so I can do a direct comparison. Danial impressed us right from the start when he came to give us an estimate. He really knows this business and is up front and honest about potential challenges and how he will go about dealing with them. For us it was a high water table with very sandy soil. The team he assigned us were so pleasant to work with, always polite, positive and hard working. . I wasn't living in the house at the time but would go there everyday and always found them on task, welcoming and willing to explain whatever they were doing. We decided to go with radiant in-floor heating with polished concrete. We have to wait 28 days before it is polished but it already looks great. Their portion of the walkout has been done beautifully. If you are looking for an underpinner, I couldn't recommend True North Underpinning any higher. I take every opportunity to tell friends and neighbours about how happy I am with them and if I needed underpinning on any future houses, they would be the only ones I would call.
