Sam The Handyman

Long story short, Sam has a questionable work ethic. The finish was sloppy and not going to last for sure. He would try to find the easiest "fix" and leave promises that never gonna fulfill. I would not recommend his service.

This is being written 4 years after the initial work was done. The roofing material that Sam had installed, due to very windy weather conditions and wild animal interference, had began to peel away from the roof. I emailed him pictures of the damage and asked about repairing same. He promptly responded, via email, and within a week or two arrived to repair the problem. Throughout the intervening time he was constantly in touch with us as to his upcoming arrival.
On the scheduled date he arrived at the house in the mid morning. He and his crew set to work and when done suggested some ways to combat the animal interference.
It speaks volumes, in my book, about a contractor's sense of customer service when he is quick to resolve a problem four years after the initial work had been completed.
We are very happy with Sam's professionalism in resolving this matter. We would not hesitate to recommend Sam and Crew to anyone in need of exterior work and in particular, roof work.

Sorry for not writing this sooner as I see others have had the same bad experience. Very nice man but not a good contractor at all.
We had minor leakage near a skylight and Sam said it needed to be replaced (learned after the fact it did not). He said how great the new one would look, and it does, on the outside. What he did not say was that the new skylight will not fit the space properly on the inside and so we have this hideous looking gap on the inside of our house. When I confronted him, he said he "doesn't do the inside, only the outside". Really. A decent contractor would tell you that the new skylight will not fit exactly and let you decide if it's a good idea to proceed. We also hired him to do some waterproofing on the outside of our house. The way he described his work, how good it will look and how effective, he guaranteed it for 5 years...Well, he basically slapped concrete along the gap between our house and the concrete walkway and charged $12/foot for the pleasure. Not only was it ugly and not effective, after two years he stopped returning calls to fix the cracked parging mess he made.
Do not hire this contractor.

The contractor installed new skylights and replaced shingles on a solarium.

Unfortunately, the roof has been leaky since the job was done . We have water stains on a large stucco ceiling and some wall sections have collapsed.

When we reported the issue in early 2016, the contractor came back and tried several potential solutions that did not end up working. He offered to return to redo the roofing job. The work was postponed several times, and at some point I stopped receiving responses for several months. This was due to a change in his email address that we were not aware of (the web site still displays the old address). I tried calling several times, but always got voicemail and did not receive a call back.

I recently got back in touch with him and asked for a refund. I am waiting for a response.

Never hire him.
Did terrible work on my new flat roof. Leaking now. Never answer your call. Have another professional did inspection, they said the job is a joke. I have to have it remoed and install a new one. Junk.
He just talk and find excuse for his really bad job. Do not waste your money, never trust him.

I hired Sam to do my flat roof and from the pictures, it looked like he'd done a good job. I hired him to do other outdoor jobs, such as re-installing new fence posts to replace broken ones. A week later, I noticed that the posts were put in so badly that they turned and pulled the fence forward. Then I noticed how badly Sam had wrapped my chimney and how the rubber membrane was never cut flush with the brick on my house so it stuck out and looked sloppy. Sam had mixed the cement for the fence posts on my new deck boards, which he installed, and now I had a huge cement patch on my deck that I had to clean again and again to get rid of the cement. I had scheduled Sam to do more work, but wrote him to say that I wouldn't be hiring him again because his work was sloppy and unprofessional. I knew I had to go on the roof but when my contractor and I finally went up, I literally wept. I've never seen a "brand new roof" look so bad. I know I shouldn't take it personally but I felt completely ripped off. There were broken seams everywhere. The flashing was drilled so tight in areas that it bulged out. The solar tube was wrapped with no flashing ring at the bottom and a big slice down the front so it gathered water. I could go on but let me just say that my insurance company was called when a tree fell on my neighbour's house. I have their full report where they have stated that the only reason my roof is not leaking is because of my old roof. The only reason I got a new roof, even though the old one wasn't leaking, was for resale value. Now I'm $8,000 in the hole, which I paid to Sam, and have to spend the same amount to have the work he did ripped off and completely redone. I've emailed him to ask him to reimburse me before I start legal action, but I have yet to hear from him so that will be my next step. I would be happy to attach the photos that the insurance company's roofer and my own second roofer sent me, along with their evaluation. To sum up, Sam threw boards down on my old roof, didn't attach them, threw rubber membrane on top but didn't secure it properly and left me with a roof that does not meet any standards. Insult to injury was when I specifically asked him not to leave any roofing garbage on my roof. He didn't. He threw all of his garbage on to my neighbour's roof. Thank goodness I found it and got rid of it before they found it.

Sam provided amazing customer service to our family last month and the work looks great! He has exceptional response time for quotes, phone callbacks, etc. We called at the last hour needing to have our work done within 4 days to meet the gas utility's deadline. Sam not only made it happen for his work, but he arranged for another trade we needed, who also treated us in the same fashion- professional, straightforward, prompt, competent and fair. Thanks Sam!

Sam came when he stated he would and performed the work quickly and efficiently. There was a minor issue with one of the repairs and it was no problem for him to come and fix it right away. Would definitely recommend him to others. Repairs included removing a chimney, repairing a chimney, and changing the slope of the roof in areas to allow proper water drainage.

Sam has helped us with a few crises, and has always been incredibly reliable. We have always been satisfied with the work - he is serious, honest, and thinks carefully about what solution makes the most sense. This time, he completed the work ahead of schedule, and seems to have resolved a leak that 3 other people over the past 12 years have claimed to fix but never managed to get rid of. He's also timely and responsible to a stunning degree for the business. But my loyalty to him comes largely from the time this past winter when we had a little emergency, and I couldn't find any one else to help. Sam was off on vacation, but texted me several times a day with questions and advice, and arranged to come to my house the day after he got back from vacation; he was waiting in front of my house before I even got home from work. He's the first person I will turn to the next time I need anything done on our house.

I can only offer the highest praise for Sam & his team and would recommend him to friends & family & anyone who asks. It was such a pleasure to deal with someone who kept his word, was always punctual, kept us posted of any changes necessary and delivered everything promised. His recommendations, professionalism & knowledge are top notch.Our roof exceeded our expectations and greatly enhanced the appearance of our home. Their care and attention to detail ensured the area around our home was left spotless and not a single leaf of the many plants and flowers around our home was damaged in the process. (which in itself is quite a feat !) And all this was delivered for a very reasonable price. We chose Sam after reading reviews on his site & I hope this review will help in your decision to choose Sam as well!
