Terrible experience with pool opening

Would not recommend this company at all

- booked for a full opening
- yes, came on scheduled book date which i have to give to them
- first day of opening (pool cover removal etc) went okay. Yes, messy but I think maybe our previous pool company just were much better in that they were kind enough to wash away our covers then dry, put away and store underneath our deck
- there was a lot of water behind our liner (likely from heavy snow from the winter) so i questioned when i was left instructions to fill the pool so they can return to test the equipment the next day
- spoke to the owner. i was advised to not fill the pool and that he will come check it
- no call or email so I contacted again
- they emailed back and advised to drain the ground water and then fill the pool. we were told draining the ground water is extra so sure, agreed to pay up extra
- got an email that they before they do any service, a credit card needs to be on file. I gave the credit card and i was billed even before the crew came to complete the job
- the crew came a few hours after the bill and i recieved an email from them indicating our pump was started but then sounds like something broke off (?the shaft) and given a quote for a pump
- none of the water behind liner was pumped. our pool left in a disarray.
- called owner again; told they cant do anything until a new pump was installed

- at this point, I am livid
1. why operate equipment when the pool isnt even filled to appropriate levels? what was the plan? to test the salt water equipment and pump without having enough water go through?
2. why wouldnt the priority have been to drain the ground water behind the liner first? that could be done with external equipment, not mine
3. why bill the services before theyre done in the first place?
4. you cant assume that customers wont want to shop around and get quotes for a pump first. not everyone is made of money.
5. because you didnt end up doing the complete "full opening" service, it is good business practice to offer a partial refund of billed services.

see attached pics. this is the mess i was left with after paying $480

$480.00

Very Disappointing

I used this company for a few services and must say I was very disappointed. They were messy for a pool opening and cleaning etc. Brian is VERY rude and difficult to deal with, would not recommend. They also made expensive and unnecessary recommendations that I later confirmed with other companies.

Winter Cover and Opening and closing service

We hired Grant & Brian Hildebrand owners of Ultimate Pools to install a winter " Elephant cover " after another Larger Oakville Pool company changed their mind on doing our cover . They did the job well and worked around our waterfall which was the challenge the other company backed out on . We have used them ever since to open and close our pool and waterfall . They have been punctual and have done the job well . I prefer to clean and treat my own water , but we have used them off an when we are on vacation to maintain the pool and it has worked well . I love going to their place on Speers Rd for water tests as the service is fast , friendly and free of charge, Thanks Paul Woody

Swimming pool filter and weekly maintenance

It was my first time having service with ultimate pool . I had my filter replaced and had weekly maintenance done by them . The owner is a very impolite and unpleasant individual. First of all they have a very poor customer service and they are not knowledgeable enough to the job. As a customer I have had service with others pool companies in Oakville and i was very satisfied with them unlike ultimate pool i had to pay more money than I expected and not only that when I brought the matters to the owner gentleman named Grant , he was so rude , unpleasant and unhelpful. I personally do not recommend this company to anyone as they cause nothing but disappointment and frustration based on my experience.
Worst pool company I ever had to deal with.

new liner & skimmer install

pool leaked immediately from skimmer mouth.they told me it was ground water and i could fill in around skimmer.i told them it wasnt and for 2 months they stuck to their story.i got food dye to see if it would go from inside of pool to exterior and it did, proving a leak.they subcontracted a company to repair leak and they failed, but they informed me that ultimate forgot a gasket originally.this was not the problem.they then insisted that the only way to stop the leak was to cut a larger opening in the pool wall and install retrofit steel faceplate at a cost of $500 to me.i refused to pay extra for a problem they caused.i took the faceplate off and noticed the back was damaged and bent in on one side, when i put faceplate into position it would fit easily,i had to force it into place to be screwed in.the cutout steel opening was smaller than it needed to be,it was preventing the faceplate from squeezing the gaskets properly.i informed brian and grant of this.they showed up 3 weeks later and replaced the skimmer(i have no idea why since that wasnt the problem)and refused to recut the steel to fit the faceplate.(the newly installed faceplate was 1/4" away from touching the liner on one side).they told me there was nothing else they could do except the $500 fix.i told them i would grind the opening larger after a heated discussion, they said they would do the grinding when they had the chance.i demanded they do it asap and they showed up the next day.3 months after installation the pool didnt leak.they did manage to let a fair amount of debris fall behind the liner when they did the grinding.i had to hire another company to remove debris and close my pool as ultimate demanded final payment with no compensation for my time and effort doing their job.they were stubborn to deal with and bragged about their years of experience without showing it with their actions.painfully incompetent.

Company Response

Below we have gone into detail regarding our experience with Mike to clarify the inaccurate statements above. First, we want to address Mike’s main point that no compensation was given for his inconvenience which is completely false. We were hired by Mike in March of last year to install a new liner and to partially complete the work of replacing the skimmer. Mike is correct in saying that there was an issue with a minor leak around the skimmer we installed, however it was unrelated to our workmanship but due to warping of the pool wall. We immediately took action to determine the source of the dampness around the newly installed skimmer. We made several visits in the days after the work was completed and after having two third party companies inspect the pool within a week, none of the parties could detect a leak using industry standard tests. As soon as the source of the leak was determined we agreed to provide free service to compensate Mike for the inconvenience of our tests not locating the leak and the time it took. This included weekly maintenance (chemicals not included) for the remainder of the 2012 season and the entire 2013 season, as well as a pool opening and closing. Since client satisfaction is our number one priority we agreed to do this even though the free service was valued at substantially more than the value of any water loss the client experienced. The leak was repaired, at no cost to the customer, but unfortunately we had to stop the free service when Mike refused to pay his balance owing to us for the fully completed liner/skimmer work as well as the chemicals that had been sold to him. We even went an extra step in order secure payment and offered to discount the original skimmer repair bill by half and Mike continued to refuse to pay.

Once the skimmer was installed, the new liner was in place, and the pool was filled, Mike noticed moisture on the wall around the skimmer and contacted us. As indicated above we immediately went out to inspect it and visually inspected the skimmer and ensured that all of the mounting screws were in place and tight. We then immediately contacted our preferred leak detection company to make sure that there were no leaks in the pool, AT NO COST TO THE CUSTOMER. They performed the test on May 25th, only two days after Mike contacted us to report the dampness around the skimmer. The leak detection company performed a dye test which did not indicate any leaks, however, they did epoxy some old screw holes around the new skimmer as a preventative measure. At no time did they indicate that there was a gasket missing as Mike incorrectly stated. After the old screw holes were epoxied the moisture did not go away so we had the company return to re-inspect, and went the further step to have our diver sent to inspect the pool for leaks, again, AT NO COST TO THE CUSTOMER. Unfortunately both companies were unable to locate any leaks and it was concluded that the moisture present around the skimmer could/must be ground water escaping from beneath the liner; this was based on their tests showing no leaks and the fact that the pool had no measurable water loss.

Understandably Mike was frustrated when there was no definite cause that we could locate for the moisture around the new skimmer so he decided to take food colouring and place it in the skimmer to see if he could detect a leak. This procedure did and we immediately contacted the companies that we paid to perform the tests to follow up; again the industry standard dye test showed no leak. Neither us nor the other companies had experienced this before; it was determined that the leak was so minor that the dye test with food colour worked because it is a much thinner consistency than the dye our industry uses. We did replace the newly installed skimmer with another at this time in order to rule out that it was defective. It is important to note that during this time we never once asked for any payment in relation to the skimmer installation, we wanted to make sure the issue was fixed first; however, Mike did refuse to pay for the balance of the liner installation that was 100% complete.

After we installed the second skimmer the dampness did not go away so we determined that the pool wall must not be perfectly plumb. The recommend fix was to remove the skimmer, make an oversized hole in the steel wall in order for a steel template to be attached to the wall which we would mount the skimmer to. We would then be 100% confident that the new skimmer would line up perfectly and would not leak. Due to the fact that this issue was not caused by our workmanship we quoted $500.00 to complete the repair, which Mike refused to authorize. Instead he wanted a possible quick fix completed (just widening the existing hole a bit) in the hopes that it would work. We indicated to Mike that we didn't want to complete this type of work as we wanted to make sure that the issue would be fixed, this is what he refers to us being difficult. We also wanted the client to avoid the expense of draining and refilling the pool twice if the quick fix did not work. The lengthy delay to rectify the problem was because Mike refused to allow/pay us to perform our recommended fix and we refused to do the quick fix. After time passed and many visits/conversations with Mike could not change his opinion, and no payment for the liner work was provided, we finally agree to perform the quick fix to resolve the situation and so we could get our payment. We did not want Mike to perform the task out of the fear that it would be done incorrectly and we would be blamed.

In the end the quick fix did work and the dampness went away. We did not charge Mike for any work related to the repair, and we continued to perform the free maintenance. After 30 days had passed since the leak was repaired we contacted Mike to arrange payment for the balance on his account. Once again he refused to pay and now stated that there was debris behind the liner related to the repair. This was unlikely but we told Mike that in order to avoid down time on the pool we would inspect/remove any debris at the time of the closing when the water level would be drained down, and he could hold back $500.00 of the balance owing as insurance. Once again he refused to pay so we indicated that we would have to put the free service on hold until payment was made; this was done as we felt that we were not going to receive any further payments. Mike refused these terms and stated we were not welcome on his property.

This was an unfortunate experience, but we believe that we made every effort to make the situation right, which we will always strive to do.

Pool opening

Had previous used Ultimate Pools with okay results, nothing spectacular. For this opening this year, got nothing but run-around and horrible service. Pool cover was not washed and was rolled up dirty and wet; pool and pool deck looked horrible despite paying for cleaning. Would not use or recommend these guys to anyone. They are more interest in "creating problems" and selling expensive repairs or products than delivering honest services. Have switched to another company and their services are far superior and they actually perform the services they are paid to do; prices are also much better.

Company Response

Hi James,

I apologize for the length of time it has taken to respond, the site administrator took quite a long time to grant us access.

The only reason why a pool cover/deck would not be pressure washed at the time of the opening is if the opening crew did not have access to water. This would have been noted on the opening report we left behind. If this was not the case I do apologize, and please contact us to discuss.

As we tell all of our customers - please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have. We will always follow up promptly and make return visits to ensure the job was done correctly.

Pool Opening

Does success come at a price? Great first year pool opening and closing; not so much the second year. Had to get the crew to come back and clean the waterline and deal with a few more issues. Seems like the company may have taken on too many customers or they are not training the staff they hire?

When you get more known because of your great service, you have to maintain that level of service or the customer services declines. I am not sure we will contract Ultimate again.

$300.00
What could this company do to improve their services?
Train staff better and ensure they have a check list for opening and closing pool - do not leave the property unless you have checked off that all steps have been done.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Do not assume that everything has been done that you are paying for.

Hi Joe,

I apologize for the length of time it has taken to respond, the site administrator took quite a long time to grant us access.

It is rare but in your case our opening crew did not perform some tasks to our/your standards. As we will always do, we immediately returned to correct the issues you found and we apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused.

We ensure that each employee has extensive training in order to complete their tasks to the high standards we expect. Unfortunately on occasion things are missed, however we will always immediately follow up to correct this. We value all feedback to ensure that our high service standards are being met.
