I first used Gem Windows and doors more than 20 years ago to replace some of the original windows in my 80-year-old house. Recently, I decided it was time to finish the job so contacted them to replace 4 windows including a second-floor window that was awkward to reach from the outside and 2 basement windows whose frames were in bad shape. At the same time, I decided to replace a probably 40-year-old storm door. In the showroom I was shown samples of all the windows and doors and the features of each were explained but there was no attempt to "upsell" me. When I chose, the quote was provided promptly and I was given a realistic estimate of the timing. The installation was done on a very cold and wet day. The installers made every effort to keep my floors clean as they moved in and out and worked quickly but carefully. All the windows look fabulous and they did an amazing job on the basement ones. Before leaving they made sure to show me how to work the windows and the door . I had one customer service complaint which was responded to and resolved quickly. I would recommend Gem to anyone who needs new windows or doors.

Shane did an amazing job of recreating a large section of very badly water- damaged cove molding as well as repairing ceiling cracks in our 1930's house. The new crown molding matches the existing molding exactly and watching Shane build and shape it by hand, layer by layer, was amazing. Similarly, he was very careful to match the texture of the crack repairs to the original texture of the ceiling. He and his co-worker, Joe, were pleasant to have around and carefully covered and screened everything as well as moving furniture as required. It was initially difficult to get hold of Shane because he was so busy but I'm so glad I persevered - especially since he is leaving Canada to return to Ireland. What a loss!

Based on the positive reviews on HomeStars, I contacted A1 to book a fireplace and chimney cleaning but also to ask about possible repair to or replacement of the damper which had not been working for several years, Owen quoted a very reasonable price for the cleaning and explained that the technician would try to fix the damper while he was here and there would be no additional charge for this. If it could not be fixed, the technician would provide me with information and quotes for a new damper. The cleaning was booked and the technician, Rick, arrived on time. He cleaned the firebox and chimney thoroughly, cleaned up all dust and spent considerable time trying to fix the damper without success. When I asked about a new damper, he explained a couple of different kinds and recommended one of them (the less expensive). Since I was going to be out of town for awhile, he said that he would arrange for the office to call me when I returned, which they did. Owen explained again about the damper and confirmed the quote. Rick was able to complete the installation that same day. Again, he was extremely careful about covering the floor and vacuuming up all dust. The installation went quickly and he explained how the damper worked and made sure I knew how to operate it before he left. I will definitely call A1 for future cleaning and any other chimney or fireplace work I might require.

My two-year-old laptop had been getting progressively hotter over the past few months. A trip to a repair shop I had used successfully in the past was not helpful and perhaps made the problem worse. When the computer began shutting down after only a few minutes due to overheating, I found Fujitech on Homestars and took my laptop there. Joseph explained that the problem was most likely a clogged fan and quoted a very reasonable price for checking and cleaning the fan. When I told him that this laptop is my only means of connecting to cyberspace, he said he would work on it as quickly as possible. By the time I got home an hour or so later, there was a message from Joseph telling me that the fan could not be fixed and I'd need a new one. I called him right back and he said he'd already ordered the new fan and the laptop would be ready the following morning. The additional cost for the new fan was very reasonable and the laptop was ready as promised. It is no longer overheating. I will definitely be using fujitech for any computer repairs from now on.

My 15-year-old refrigerator suddenly started making a loud noise, like a tractor or airplane. I called Aubrey who had fixed a dishwasher for me several years ago and left a voice mail describing the problem. Aubrey called back quickly and, even though it was late afternoon, said he would come right away. When he arrived he said he was pretty sure he knew what the problem was and proceeded to remove the parts of the fridge necessary to show me an ice build up around the fan. He thawed the ice, made sure the drain was open, and cleaned out a part on the back of the fridge, making sure it was completely free of "gunk". He then put everything back together and pushed the fridge back against the wall. Problem solved. I would recommend Aubrey to anyone who wants prompt, efficient and friendly appliance repair services.

I found the listing for AFG on HomeStars when I needed someone to respond quickly. Water was flowing from the pressure relief valve of my boiler, followed by no heat whatsoever. It is not easy to find someone with the expertise and willingness to work on a boiler so I was pleased to see that Rafi does so. Rafi called back within a short time after I left a message and came to inspect the situation that same day. He determined that parts were needed as well as a variety of maintenance procedures and arranged to come the next day to complete the work which included draining the expansion tank, cleaning the boiler, replacing/repairing several valves, bleeding and restarting the system. It is all working perfectly now. I very much appreciated Rafi's quick response, his obvious knowledge, his willingness to explain what he was doing and why and the fact that he did not try to sell me a new boiler. I will definitely call Rafi for the annual tune-up next year and for any problems that might arise in the meantime. I would highly recommend AFG to anyone who wants prompt, honest, professional service.

Gliding Shelf Solutions installed shelves in 2 lower kitchen cupboards and removed a lazy susan in one of them. It is such a pleasure to be able to reach a pot without having to crouch down and remove other pots to get at the one I need. The shelves installed where the lazy susan had been easily tripled the capacity of that cupboard and made things much easier to get at. Marianna responded quickly to my request for a quote and worked around my schedule to do the installation. I did not get the name of the young man who did the installation but want to commend him on his workmanship. He clearly knew what he was doing and did it well. He even adjusted my cupboard doors slightly to close the gap and avoid having to attach the centre piece to one of the doors, which I was thrilled about. I would highly recommend this company and its product.

Canlik refaced my kitchen cupboards and built and installed 2 new cupboards, a drawer unit and a countertop. The kitchen looks fabulous and, almost a year later, the products and workmanship have held up well. The work was done on time and the workmen were courteous and professional. The plumber they sent to install new sink and taps I had purchased elsewhere was excellent and went to a lot of trouble to make sure everything was working properly. I did have a problem with their customer service at one point which is why I'm not giving a perfect "10" rating. The problem started when one of their representatives verbally quoted me a price for a new sink, which was an afterthought, and made it clear that the price he quoted included installation. I repeated his quote and what it included and he confirmed it and assured me that there would be no additional costs. When I contacted the office to put in the order, as he had asked me to do, I was informed that the price was double what I had been quoted. When I objected and explained the conversation with their representative, there was not even an acknowledgement that he had made a mistake, much less an apology and certainly no mention of even a token reduction in the new price. I declined in writing to purchase the sink from them and stated my objection to their business practice in this regard. Canlik's response was to tell me that "management" had decided to cancel my contract because of my objection. I did not want to start the whole process of finding a new company, selecting from their products, etc. and was under some time pressure so I swallowed my anger, gritted my teeth and grovelled. I basically begged them not to cancel my contract and said I must have misunderstood (which I know I didn't). They never did take any responsibility at all for the situation but did agree not to cancel the contract. While I would recommend Canlik to anyone considering refacing, I would advise them to be very careful about accepting anything verbal - make sure everything is in writing and very detailed- and be aware that this company does not respond well to criticism.

We had NO intention to use the 100% refund of your deposit to force you to purchase the sink from us. It was perfectly your choice. We just wanted you, as our valuable potential customer, who had doubt on us at that particular moment, had a fair chance to reconsider your choice even you had signed the contract. We believed that you could make a better decision (on choosing your contractor) only if you were not losing a penny even you bailed out of the deal. We were sorry about the sink quotation misunderstanding. Just to clarify the misunderstanding, the price quoted was lower than those from most big box stores. On top of that, the price included mounting the sink to the new counter top. A promise that we did perform. However, you were asking for plumbing services to be included. Sink mounting and plumbing services are two different services. Just like faucets, dish washers, toilets, etc. The price of fixtures would not include plumbing services. We just tried to draw your understanding of this generally accepted fact. We could not offer an apology or discount to you because the action would carry a wrong message of admitting that we treated you with dishonest, which we did not. Having said all that, we sincerely treasured the opportunity to serve you and thank you for giving us the chance, even after the miss understanding, to proof to you that you had made the right choice. THE MOST IMPORTANT FACT IS THAT YOU ARE NOW ENJOYING YOUR KITCHEN. THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR COMMENT.

This is a long overdue review to commend and recommend Langstaff and Sloan. Three years ago I contacted the company about removing the knob and tube wiring in my 1930s house. Rob came promptly and provided a detailed quote. He made a number of suggestions and recommendations and explained what the code required but he never tried to 'upsell' me which I very much appreciated. Brad led the crew that did the work and I was impressed with his professionalism and friendliness and his creativity when problems were encountered. The work took the week that Rob had predicted and they cleaned up and made sure that I had power at the end of each day. I was never uncomfortable leaving the house while they crew was working. The holes were plastered professionally and were hardly noticeable in some places. The location of the new mast was a bit of a problem but Rob came up with the perfect solution that solved the problem and passed inspection. A few months ago, during a kitchen reno, I needed some more outlets and light fixtures that had not occurred to me when the previous work was being done. Again, Rob came promptly to provide a quote and the work was done quickly and exactly as I wanted. I would highly recommend Langstaff and Sloan to anyone who needs electrical work done. I will definitely call them for any future work on my house..

I needed several repairs/replacements to taps, toilet, etc. in my 1930's house and was considering the installation of a backwater valve on my sewer line. I got Valentin's name from Homestars and contacted him by email. Although nothing was an emergency or even urgent, Valentin got back to me right away and came promptly to provide a quote including the backwater valve which I decided to get. The quote was reasonable and accurate - no surprises except for Valentin who ran into and quickly and graciously fixed a problem he wasn't expecting. He and his crew arrived on time and completed all the work efficiently. On the one occasion Valentin was held up at another job, he contacted me within the time he had said he'd be at my place to say he'd be an hour late. I wish all tradesmen would be as considerate! I was very pleased with Valentin's work and would definitely recommend him to others. He will be my 'go to' plumber from now on. .
