Bathroom Reno

Just a warning about this company. They took my deposit and now refuse do the work or refund my deposit of $4500. Full transparency I did have to reschedule the job a couple of time because of family issues. However that does not give the company the right to basically take my money. I just want my deposit back. Please be wary of this company.

*UPDATE*
1. The client was refunded for the outstanding amount
2. Delivery of Vanity and counter top has been scheduled

Hi Lucrecia,

First and most importantly, I hope all is well with you and your family.

When the contract was signed back on February 29th, 2024 an Invoice for $6,553.00 +hst was submitted, to which $3,275.58 + hst had been paid, which accounted for roughly half of the initial invoice amount. Though the full amount was not cleared, we still proceeded with scheduling, design consultation and procurement of materials in good faith. Unfortunately and understandably, you had to move the start date along, to which we had no objection. Sadly, we were informed the day before our start date that you had to indefinitely put the project on hold. Fast forward a couple of months, you reached out to us and we were informed that the scope and budget had to be cut, to which we agreed. We then set s tentative start date for July of 2024, but due to circumstances, I had requested a hard start date of Aug 5th, which brings us here.

The vanity (budget $2,300 +hst and Faucet $250 +hst have been procured and stored for you. Though the faucet is returnable, I am unable to return the vanity. We are still fully committed to you and your project and await your start date confirmation.

I do hope to hear from you soon.

3-4 Month Basement Reno Never Completed After 53 Weeks+

Hired Mr. Furlani (owner), Urbanest Construction. Signed a contract in Nov. 2020 (8 months into COVID) to renovate a 700 s.f. basement in 12-16 weeks. Were assured it would be a "turnkey" experience.
All workers are SUB-contractors. Several refused to return until they got paid.
At 1 point we hadn't seen Marko for 5 weeks and there was no work done during this time. He'd regularly be absent for 1-2 weeks at a time with no work progressing.
27 sub-contractors came to quote jobs. Marko was on site for only 4.
We paid Marko in full for a new Furnace/AC unit prior to installation. The HVAC Co. was partially paid & the rest was paid the day Urbanest Construction (11 months later) was fired. We had no tag & the A/C freon ran out in July.
We did MOST of the reno cleanup (shovelling dirt/debris, sweeping/vacuuming). Marko was always "sending" someone to clean, but no one EVER showed up!
Our main stack got damaged. Flushing the only toilet in the house caused urine/feces to pour out of the stack into the trenched hole.
Crew toilet arrived 16 weeks INTO the project but was removed shortly after because he told us he couldn't "afford" to pay $500/month. Workers had to use our only other bathroom during covid.
Plumber #1 made a mess of the plumbing stack & installed plumbing pipes in the wrong location. Plumber #2 reworked laundry & stack (hasn't been paid in full).
Steel beam was left hanging by chains (didn't fit in the block foundation) attached to temporary 2x4s that were holding up the main floor. A small fire happened during welding of the beams.
HVAC Co. #2 cut 3 NEW wires, wrapped electrical tape around each & said they were fine. Marko told me they were fine. Electrician inspected the wires. ALL 3 needed replacing.
Wrong vanity arrived from Winnipeg, sat on the driveway for a week until I called, arranged for pickup & I reordered the correct one. Store person told me the vanity was NOT ordered in Feb. 2021 like Marko told me. It was ordered in SEPT (7 months later).
We were threatened with bankruptcy twice.
I was directly told not to talk to the sub-contractors. The workers liked discussing how other jobs were not progressing, who was not getting paid & how other clients were being mistreated.
Our reno went PAST 53 weeks, with 5 missed completion dates. Fast forward to Nov. 2021 (7 months past contract date) & still was unfinished.
On Nov. 25 we finally FIRED him, after no work was done for another 2 weeks. Hinges were thrown onto our new quartz countertop, and Marko started yelling because we asked what the delay was this time (a conversation we have had numerous times since March 2021). He kept saying he had "no money!" Up to this point we paid $83 000.00. Disgusted with his conduct & aggression, we told him to leave & not come back. Phone calls/texting to us started so, we filed a complaint with the Police.
Very quick to take our money AND when we wanted to delay a payment (so the job would get caught up) we were threatened that the project would further get delayed. Urbanest Construction invoiced us twice for the last payment (due UPON COMPLETION). Invoice was inflated with extras (change order to a change order) already paid for in a previous change order invoice. (More doors and pot lights were charged than were actually installed. )
Sub-contractors we reached out to, to complete the jobs they started, told us they haven't been paid so they will not return.
Lots of work is still left & many deficiencies to fix. Since the beams were installed, there are stress cracks on the main floor walls and one in the upstairs that need to be addressed.
Very dishonest. Marko breached his contractual obligations and moneys should be returned for the work NOT completed.

Beware of Marko and Urbanest Construction

We DO NOT recommend Marko or Urbanest Construction for your home renovation needs.

Unfortunately, we had the displeasure of signing a contract with Marko and were very dissatisfied with our dealings with him and his company. He is not well respected within his industry and does not keep his promises or honour his end of the contract.

We received a quote from Marko at the end of January 2021 (which was 10 months into the Covid Pandemic). He advised it would take 3 months to complete the renovation project. We expressed our concern and weariness with dealing with contractors because of the horror stories we heard while watching Mike Holmes programs. He advised Mike Holmes gives contractors bad names but unfortunately, a contractor like Marko is exactly what Mike Holmes warned us about.

In February 2021, 11 months into the Covid pandemic, Marko sent his team to start the demolition of our main floor. The Demo was on time, and we firmed up our design with the designing team. During this time, our main floor was off limits without a kitchen sink. We were preparing our meals in our bedroom with a toaster and microwave oven. I was working from home and overheard contractors complaining about Marko. With their discussions, I immediately realize he is not well respected by his team.

In March of 2021, Marko started to pull no shows and gave many excuses as to why he would not be able to make it to our location. We started to notice that the only time he would arrive at our home was when payments were due.

April of 2021, 13 months into Covid: Marko advised that we need to pay up front for the Kitchen Cabinets. Marko advised this would keep us ahead of other customers so our cabinets would not be delayed. During this time the Cabinet Makers came in to take measurements. Marko advised they were on time and will be ready in a few weeks.

May 2021, 14 months into Covid: Marko continues to pull no shows at our location. He offers excuses after excuses as to why the project is not being worked on or even close to being complete. 4 months into our project, we are still without a kitchen sink. I expressed my concern and asked for a temporary sink which he agreed to install. He never installed one. Our marriage begins to become strained because we realize that most of our money is gone but the project is nowhere near completion.

June 2021, 15 months into Covid: Excuses mount. Contractors begin to show up but have no idea where Marko is. We still do not have a sink. Our main floor is still bare to the studs. Marko advises he is caught off guard with delays due to Covid. At this time 2 homes are being built from scratch down our street and are nearly complete.

June 17 2021: Marko gets into a yelling match with one of his contractors. The contractor was furious because when he showed up, he was waiting on Marko to arrive so he could get direction and tools to start the job. This contractor was at our home pacing and waiting for him for over 4 hours. He commuted from Mississauga only to wait on his boss. My son was online with remote learning. I had to close his windows because the profanities and yelling was getting out of control. His contractor was furious because he was not being paid by Marko. This contractor quits on the spot and tells him he “is a joke and you can talk to your customers like they don't know what's going on and not tell them the truth but don’t do that with me. I know exactly what you are about.” I couldn’t believe Mr. Furlani would be so unprofessional that he would have an argument on our front porch. They were screaming at each other, using profanities and having no regard of his customers or the neighbours.

July 2021, 16 months into Covid: I started to receive phone calls from various contractors asking for pay. This made me very nervous because at this time we gave Marko all but one payment (which was a BIG mistake on our part). Marko was to take care of paying all contractors. The only person I was to pay was Marko/Urbanest Construction. The contractors were advising that Mr. Furlani told them that I never paid him which is NOT TRUE. I have proof with my cashed cheques that he was paid on time. At this point I realized we were in a bad situation and figured out that we were dealing with a dishonest individual. We start to see Marko once ever few weeks if we were lucky. There is absolutely NO PROGRESS at all up to this point. We still do not have a sink after he promised he would install a temporary one. I approached Marko with the fact that I was getting phone calls from contractors, and he said he paid them and had no idea why they would be contacting me. Since I started to get very nervous, I did some research and found the Cabinet Makers phone number. I contacted him and he advised that he was never paid and didn’t even START our cabinets. We were devastated to say the least. I confirmed all our suspicions and fears and realized we were taken for fools. I approached Marko with my concerns. Marko advised that I had “No right to talk to his workers and he “forbids me to contact anyone.” I found this suspicious and infuriating. I couldn’t believe he would talk to a paying customer like this. We were so far with payments that my husband and I were nervous that he would walk away with all of our money.

August 2021, 17 months into Covid: We finally get our sink after numerous requests and excuses from Marko. He would always have an excuse when we asked for one with, “next week…next week”. Just to clarify, this new sink was NOT a temporary one. It was our permanent kitchen sink.

September, 18 months into Covid: We FINALLY have our kitchen cabinets installed. We were told by the Cabinet Maker that Marko has been avoiding everyone with pay including him. He advised that the quartz counter company wouldn’t release our counter tops to Marko because he owed them money from a previous job. I did some more research and found out from our central vac installer that Marko sent him to a job that is in the same predicament as us! Seems as though he is getting money from one job to pay the previous job that he didn’t complete.
I approached Marko once again. At this point, we did not have our fireplace or entertainment unit completed. Painting was not completed. Our window was not installed (Marko installed it incorrectly which caused water damage and rodents to get into our home. We needed to have that damage repaired thanks to his incompetence). Marko advised that there were delays after delays. I was fed up with his excuses that I told him I wanted my money back from the services not rendered. He advised he couldn’t do that. He said he didn’t have the money anymore. When I questioned where my money went, he didn’t have an answer. He became very confrontational and said that he misquoted me. I advised that it was not my fault if he misquoted us. “A professional would know how to quote a job”. I explained that he had a legal obligation fulfill the contract. His reply was "Well I guess I will need to fold up shop and claim bankruptcy.” I was furious. This individual who claimed to be a “professional” just threatened to claim bankruptcy after I paid him in full against our better judgement! He made promises after promises! I believed him and trusted HIM! He basically made a fool of me and my husband. HE took our money and ran. I asked him to leave my home. He refused to! I told him he took our hard-earned money and squandered it without giving us what we paid him for. His response was, “I’m here, aren’t I?” I didn’t understand what he was trying to say at first but I think he was implying that because he was here, I should be happy. Well, all I have to say Marko is, we would have been happy if you would have fulfilled your contract and completed the job in 3-or-5-months tops (considering delays). Your sneaky dealings were not appreciated. Arriving at a job sight and swinging a hammer once in a while is not progress!

Ultimately, my husband fired him at the end of September. He asked him to return our money (which he did not). We were left to finish the job ourselves. He left our marriage in shambles; our finances are strained, and we were left looking like fools for believing a smooth talker who had answers for everything and believes his own tales..

We needed to have our experiences heard so we could sleep better at night. We wanted everyone to know what it is like dealing with Marko and Urbanest Construction. We do not want another family to have to live through the stress and deceit we have had to deal with. He has been reported to the City of Hamilton and to Reno-Assist (where we found him). We are out of $7-10k and are still needing to get more contractors to complete a project he agreed to complete in 3 months. Covid excuses can only go so far when 2 homes were completed from scratch in under a year before our kitchen was.

Be very wary of signing on with Marko and Urbanest Construction. As you can see, this has been a nightmare for us from the beginning.
We are still waiting for our refund for services not rendered!

****Feb 2022 update- We have had to spend and additional $10,000 to have the project completed and to date, we have not received a reimbursement! He was well aware that we wanted our money back for services not rendered! Both my husband and I asked for it on separate occasions*****

Deposit returned - UPDATE

I met with Marko from Urbanest to do some renovations on my home in the fall of 2019. At the time he came recommended by a friend whose house he was working on. We agreed on a budget and price. I gave him a $5000. Deposit plus hst.

I want to report that Marko did pay back the deposit in full - it took a while - but he was true to his word

Hi Amy, Thank you very much for your review.

It would have been a pleasure to work on your project, however, I did completely understand why you wished to terminate our contract. I sincerely hope that you’ve been able to complete your renovation and are happy with the results.

Home addition

Marko and the Urbanest Construction team are a pleasure to work. They helped us to navigating through city permits, and even represented us on community of adjustment. He handled all city inspections up to completion, also handling minor change requests arisen, coordinated soil inspection as per city request and even unforeseen challenges like our garage not having any foundation and requiring underpinning. Very responsive, always available for a phone call and prompt to solve any issue that came during the renovation. The finishings used in our house were outstanding and gorgeous. They mantra comes with "we want to make you happy" is followed by heart, and even though they were not able to finish the project on time, our house became so beautiful, it has everything we ever dreamt of. Thanks Marko and Urbanest to make our dream come true.

Thank you so very much for such a wonderful review. It has truly been a pleasure to work with you both on this project. We have been on a very, very long journey from the application of the permit, establishing design and execution. The final product is something we are extremely proud of as I am sure you are as well. I hope you many years of enjoyment in your new space.

Reno a bathroom/adding a new bathroom and walk-in closet

One of the main reasons we picked Urbanest construction as we felt Marko would be a good communicator.....we were correct. We were updated and questions were asked typically on a daily basis....in person most days.
No matter what happened throughout the project, we always felt we are taken care of.
Our new and reno’ed bathrooms look spectacular with a few special effects/additions from Marko that we had not thought about. Marko has a good eye for design and will make sure the project works together.
The budget in our case never changed from day one. Marko prides himself of not adding costs unless absolutely necessary on major unforeseen circumstances.
Marko is a hard working, honest and responsible general contractor. I would have no problem in recommending Urbanest Construction.

Wall removal, kitchen renovation

I had been wanting to renovate my main floor for years but was always hesitant to get started. The job would require removing a load bearing wall; the thought of that alone stressed me out. I had talked to other contractors in my area and they would tell me the job couldn't be done or that it would cost me double what I had budgeted. No one wanted to think outside of the design box, except Marko. I contacted Marko and discussed the scope of work and my concerns based on what I had been told during previous meetings. We arranged a meeting and after checking out my space he assured me what I wanted done, could in fact be done and for a reasonable price. Marko created an open concept living space complete with a brand new kitchen that has changed how I feel about living in this house - I actually enjoy cooking in my kitchen now! I can happily entertain friends and family without feeling cramped or like my guests are on top of each other. The space is finally functional and to say I am happy with the end result would be an understatement. The process was long and strenuous as I anticipated it would be and as is expected when living through a major renovation, but Marko was calm, cool and professional all along the way. He listened to my wants and needs and with his keen eye for design and attention to detail, he worked with me to create the space I have so longed for. Some days, especially the ones when I was losing my sanity and blowing up his phone with text messages, I'm surprised he didn't fire me. Instead, he always talked me down and assured me things would be fine and it would be worth it in the end. It was. Thanks Marko! Looking forward to phase two!

Office space created

I wanted an office on the main floor since I work from home a lot. I decided that the best solution was divide our very long dining / living room and use the living room as an office. (Cause who uses a living room anyways).

Worked with Marko to find the best solution which allowed the light to come Into the dining room but still gave me my cozy space for working. I love my new offfice space. Marko has beautiful taste and executed the design perfectly! Thank you Marko. Love my new office space.
