Rebuilding of railing at front of house &

The front of my house was looking terrible. The previous owner had put up some horrible mdf board that was gaudily painted and had swollen and cracked in the rain.

I found John on homestars and gave him a call. He was very likeable and amenable to working with the particularities of the situation. He got to work, did it quickly and to a high standard. Replacing the front railing on my house completely transformed its curbside appeal, and for that, John and his services were a snip at the price. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a skilled and affable carpenter who gets the job done.

Replace deck

This is the second project that BBG Carpentry did for us. Similar to our last experience, the workmanship was excellent, very finely finished, and completed within the estimated price and timeframe despite some unforeseen adjustments having to be made. John is a real pleasure to deal with and I would highly recommend B.B.G. Carpentry for any carpentry and renovation work.

Window Seat

John listened to what we were looking for and designed a beautiful window seat for us! For a reasonable cost, he also brought in an electrician to install lighting for us and a fastastic painter to make the window seat look perfect. We're thrilled with the result. In addition to his awesome carpentry skills, he's also a terrific guy, and immediately earned our trust. I would recommend him to anyone interested in beautifully done, creative carpentry work.

backyard

Currently, John has done two projects for me my front porch and my backyard. The front porch included elaborate details regarding moulding. The backyard included a deck reconstruction, pergola, garden shed and fencing. Both projects required a high attention detail, which John is an expert at. For example, all screws on the porch were counter sunk and covered with a wood plug in which John ensured that the grain of the wood plug went in the same direction as the floor board. John has proven himself to be trustworthy, dependable and to stand by his word. I search for three years to find a contractor of his caliber and I have highly recommended him to many others.

The house had undergone a major renovation which included all new windows and doors, a new kitchen, and 2 renovated bathrooms. All the windows needed to be trimmed, all crown moulding and baseboard was replaced on the main floor of the house.

John came highly recommended to me from a mutual friend in the business. We were under a time crunch wanting to be completed before Christmas, and wanting to move out of a RV Parked in the driveway !!
While we did not quite make the Christmas deadline, John and his crew did get their work completed before Christmas so the remaining trades could finish by the new year. I would highly recommend him to my friends and will have him return in the new year to complete a smaller separate project. Thanks. Kate

carpentry

I hired John based on his outstanding reviews on homestars. The services he did on our home include but are not limited to: building a custom fireplace, tiling, new stairs, pickets, wainscotting, painting and crown moulding. More specifically, John is an exceptional finishing carpenter. This trade is hard to find. His attention to detail is impeccable. John takes pride in his work, is polite, and an absolute pleasure to have around. We have enlisted his help yet again for our basement renovation and will post pictures upon completion. Stay tuned. I highly recommend John to anyone looking to do home renovations.

Front Porch

We had John and Paul tear down an existing enclosed porch and build us a beautiful open traditional front porch. They stripped it down to the frame, replaced and reenforced where needed and did some really nice wood work on the newel posts and bottom trim. When they opened up the top they discovered most of the old trim was intact and did some very nice carpentry work to match the old stuff. I've received plenty of compliments from friend as well as strangers on how great the porch looks, which is really a testament to the great job the lads did. I would recommend them to anyone.

Second story deck and storage space

We had a second story deck situated on top of an exterior storage space. The old pressure-treated wood was deteriorating and the floor/roof had been eaten away by carpenter ants allowing for leakage into the storage space and mold infestation into the existing drywall. We knew 8 years ago that we would eventually need to replace the deck but our carpenter ant infestations over the last few years brought the problem to the top of our priority list. So despite the poor economy we started interviewing contractors. We found John through Homestars. Very early in the process John impressed me with his knowledge, openness, and detail orientation. All of John’s references were outstanding. He was punctual and provided a reasonable estimate and options. John worked well with my architect and responded in a timely fashion to all questions and modifications that we encountered. John coordinated many of the trades that were needed for garbage removal, roofing, and aluminum railing and the work from demolition to build progressed on an even pace and was finished according to expected timeframes and budgets. I was consulted regularly on progress and new options that might deviate from budget. John and Paul did all of the demolition and carpentry work. Their attention to detail and quality craftsmanship is obvious. No corners were cut (so to speak) and in some cases lots of extra time was devoted to improving the drainage of the new structure and ensuring its long term stability. They built the new deck to last. John and Paul and all of their sub-trades were pleasant and personable and honest people. I recommend John highly and would not hesitate to use him again.

Basement Renovation/Crown Moulding

My wife and I tackled the job of finishing our basement this past year. We wanted to build a great space for our family. The basement design included a small study, a rec room, a laundry room, a bedroom and a bathroom. We decided not to use a general contractor but to interview and bring in trades that we liked and trusted and received good reviews on homestars or came recommended. We paid particular attention to how they were going to do the job. We also did some of the work ourselves.

For the basement we hired John to do the framing and finish carpentry (doors & trim). We also had him do the crown moulding on our main floor and he also brought in our drywaller. He obviously had great reviews on Homestars and his references were great as well.

With our basement design we tried to use every inch of space and provide a lot of room for storage which made the framing very important. John's commitment to quality and advice throughout the framing stage were outstanding and were the key to the space turning out as great as it did. The great thing about John was that he would provide great advice on design and workmanship and explain things in detail - but at the end of the day, would always defer to what the client wanted.

John is also great about bringing in the right people if he feels they can do a better job. We had a lot of tricky bulkheads in our basement so John brought in a metal framer to come in and do the bulkheads to go along with his framing. The person he brought in was so good we wound up using him for our drywalling, taping, and mudding.

John was punctual and worked very hard right through the day. He was on the job from start to finish. The only time he moved on to another job was when we had to call in the next trade and didn't need him until later.

We hired John, not becuase his quote was the cheapest (we had a lot of people quote cheaper rates), but because he was most knowledgable and we felt his process was in line with what we knew to be the right way to do the job. I have seen other contractors work and I have to say, you get what you pay for. The price we include in this review is for the work he did himself plus that of the people he brought in (and does not include taxes).

My wife and I enjoyed working with John and we would highly recommend him to anyone of our friends. And we would definitely use him again.

Deck and structural work

I am a general contractor who asked John to meet with my customer and provide an estimate for a deck. John explained several options very clearly and answered the customer's questions in detail. After the meeting, the customer felt comfortable about working with him, and confident with her final choices after being given so much useful information. She also felt the price was quite reasonable. John and his team did a beautiful job on the deck they built and completed it on time and on budget. He was also a great help with other framing and support issues I came across while renovating the room leading to the deck. It is clear to me that he has a great deal of general construction knowledge and that building and renovating properly and beautifully is very important to him. His costs for dealing with the extras I asked him to take on were very reasonable. John and his crew were a pleasure to work with and kept my customer very happy during their time on the project. And most importantly, they left the customer with a deck she and her family were thrilled with. John is a true professional whom I recommend without hesitation.
