Roof Repairs

I like this company and I like Tony, which is why I've used them numerous times. I've never had any problem with their products or their service, and that is why Metro can continue to count on me being their customer for my roofing needs.

Roof Repair

My old roof was a mess. I called in Tony after my wife found his listing on Homestars and he has been awesome. He met with me at the time he said he would, took stock of our situation and came up with a solution that woud work. He stripped back old roof, completely, put in a new section of roof, repaired the soffit, he did it all. The price I paid was exactly as quoted and the job he did was great.

Leak on Flat Garage Roof

I contacted three companies immediately after Hurricane Sandy left a leak in my garage roof. Tony came out, gave me a quote, and after I accepted it, came back the following week when said he was going to. I was pleased with his reliability and he did the work quickly and efficiently. Tony's the guy for the job, he's very personable, and very, very knowledgable

Had the sixteen unit townhouses shingled

I would like to thank Tony for all his help in getting the roof fixed. His price was good and he showed up and finished the project in no time. We all have back decks and they where all cleaned up when it was finished. This job was done back in 96 and still no problems. once again thanks metro roofing.

flat roof replacement

Thanks to homestars i found the most reliable roofing company to finally work on my roofing project and completed in june 2012. We are a young new home owners and not at all well informed with the trades. But doing further research i have found out that you should always go for a company that has an expertise in your particular project. For instance, I require a flat roof, although a lot of roofing companies offer the service, they do not have the expertise. I gotten an estimate 4 other roofing companies and none had the presentation that Tony Britsky (owner) presented to us. Professional, quick to answer questions, and is evident that he's an experienced roofer. Sincere with his words, and definitely followed through his promise. Metro Roofing Inc is not the cheapest also not te most expensive. nonetheless, the result was well worth it. I highly recommend metro roofing inc (tony britsky) because of the pride he has of what he does, the cleanliness of his work, and his amazing staff. I thank you Tony and your staff for the great job you did with my flat roof.

Roof Shingles

This Metro Roofing Inc is actually Ajax-based. They re-shingled my roof back in 1998; no complaint on workmanship. Fast forward to 2012, their pricing is still very competitive. Tony (owner) is by no means pushy, answered my questions to the point and trailed with a highly detailed proposal on the scope of work ( by email ). The work is done on time and with no hidden extra cost. However, even with the tarps laid around the house, I still picked up handful of nails around the house; room for improvement here. Over the duration of the project, Tony responded to my emails and phone calls in a timely fashion.

Company Response

Henry was the third repeat customer we at Metro Roofing had this month. We try our very best to contain the debris with placement of bin, covering the lawn with tarps and dragging the lawn with a magnet when we are done. Unfortunately sometimes the magnet does not always pick up the ones we cant see. Good to know so we can improve on this in the future.

re-cover flat roof

Roofing companies are notoriously untrustworthy but Metro came and worked as promised. They quickly responded to an issue which arose and fixed the problem. Tony came as scheduled to assess the situation and the work was completed on time.

Flat Roof Flashing Replacement

We hired Tony from Metro Roofing Inc to replace the flashing around our flat roof 2-storey building. When it came time to decide on the colour flashing, Tony suggested we visit the manufacturer to view the colours available and to pick the exact colour we wanted them to purchase. My Partner did and brought home a sample and gave the sample to one of his workers as instructed by Tony.
Upon arriving the next day to do the job I noticed that they had purchased the wrong colour not according to the sample we provided them. Arguments erupted. In the end we were forced to accept the colour they purchased or according to Tony “they would just walk away from the job.”

A week later they arrived and finished the work in one day.

The next day it rained. At about 10:15 am we noticed water dripping from the top of the windowpane on the first floor and ground floor. (The ground floor window being located directly under, in line with the first floor window.) We placed two buckets on the ground floor window to catch the dripping water. As the water flow increased to a stream on the ground floor I ran to the top floor to check and noticed that the water was seeping though and damaging the baseboards and windowsill. I ran downstairs and now the water was pouring in. My Partner and I immediately called Tony at Metro Roofing trying desperately to get a hold of him or any one at their office to help us. There was no answer.
An employee who works with me in the building ran outside and noticed that there was a waterfall of water coming out from underneath the roof flashing in one section, down the side of the building. At this point we were panicked. We called Tony and their offices, again no one answered. We realized we were on our own.

My Partner got out the ladder and in the middle of the thunderstorm climbed to the roof to try and see what was happening. He discovered that there was a huge section of the tiling they installed directly above the windows that was not adhered to the roof. He was able to lift up the tile on all sides. Water was now pouring into our place on both floors.

Luckily we actually had a tube of roofing sealant in our utility room. My partner and I went back to the roof and squeezed the sealant underneath and around the faulty tile work. I went down and checked and the water that was once pouring from underneath the flashing had slowed, almost stopped. After a run to the hardware store to purchase more sealant my Partner then spent the next few hours trying to figure where else they had not properly sealed the roof and applied sealant himself.

Tony finally left a message on my Partners cell phone at 1:40 pm that he was on his way. He arrived at approximately 4pm. My Partner took him to the roof to show him the faulty work. We also showed him the damage on the first and ground floor and explained the series of events of the day. He had few words to say, and sorry was not one of them. He said that “there was nothing he could do right now but he would have his workers here in the next few days to fix their work”. I told him that I would be a fool to let Metro Roofing back on my roof under any circumstances and that I was actively seeking another company to fix their mess. He then said, “ I will not be filing an insurance claim for you”. I told him from all that he had done to this point “why would I expect you to do the right thing?”
I said I would proceed as I see fit and that he should do the same. He then stormed out slamming the door and drove off.

The very job we hired them for, to upkeep our roof and try to keep weather damage from happening, they caused. There is certainly cosmetic damage and now we are working with our insurance company to discover what other damage Metro Roofing has caused us.

Company Response

It is very unfortunate this job went the way it did. We work hard to ensure customer satisfaction and in the rare circumstance when the job runs into problems we will continue until the customer is happy. In this case we were told not to return to the site and we were not paid for services rendered, so we were left with little options but to walk away. We were called to repair the metal work on this roof that was in terrible condition causing leaks. The client did not want a full replacement of the faulty work, but just the flashing done for the sake of aesthetics. They were told at that time and in writing that we could not guarantee this would fix the leak. Regardless we were very willing to help this customer when it was apparent that there were still leaking problems, but we were told this would be taken up with the insurance company and we were not to perform any work. We have not heard anything from the insurance company and can only assume that the cause of the leak does not have to do with the flashing we replaced as we suspected. We regret we were not given the opportunity to make amends with this client and we wish them all the best.

Tar and gravel flat roof + sheet metal cap on parapet wall

Metro Roofing replaced the flat roof on my downtown house in early 2006.

I was always unsure of the quality of the job. My roof was replaced in the middle of the winter when daylight hours are very short. Before signing the contract, I asked if this would be an issue, and was told not to worry about it - there would be plenty of daylight hours in which to get the work done. To my surprise, when the work day came, the first guy didn't show up until after 10 AM. It was about 10:45 before the rest of the crew arrived and started work. 2 good daylight hours were lost. Sure enough, at about 4:30 PM when the sun was setting, I climbed the ladder and took a look at the roof - it was about half done. Joists were still exposed, and patches of the old roof were still attached. So, about half of my roof was built in complete darkness. I've always had a sinking feeling about that. And I was right. The roof has been leaking since day 1.

The roofers weren't even the true disappointment. The sheet metal crew who capped the parapet wall are the real reason for the bad review. They came a few days after the roofing crew. My girlfriend was watching through the window as they were arriving, unloading and prepping the work. She was appalled to see one of them relieving himself on the tree in our yard. Not a good first impression. But they did their work and I never thought much about it.

After the work was done and because of my concerns, I had a home inspector take a look at the roof. He was shocked that he was looking at a new roof. He noted several bare spots where the tar was exposed with no gravel protection, and that there were a few large areas of water ponding. He pointed out that there was no Gravel Stop at the edge and that over time, my eaves would fill with gravel (which they did). He also noted a lack of caulking on the parapet cap. Plus, since the site cleanup was done in the dark, my yard was a mess of gravel and bits of old roofing. I called Tony and asked that he come back to inspect the work for himself. He never did. He sent the foreman from his roofing crew who put down a bit more gravel and did a more thorough clean up.

The parapet cap was constructed in several pieces, joined together with folded seams. None of the seams were caulked. I'm not sure if this is normal, but I am sure it contributed to its failure. I'm not a roofer, and I don't have access to the CRCA specifications, but my eyes and my common sense tell me that the fasteners they used to attach the sheet metal were too short.

So about a year ago, there was a really windy day. And on that day, about half of my parapet cap came unfastened. Some of it fell back on to the roof, but a few pieces actually blew off and on to the ground. I don't need to tell you what a tragedy that would have been if someone had been passing by, or in the yard when a 4 foot long, sharp edged piece of 26-gauge sheet metal came flying down. We were lucky.

The roof came with a 10 year warranty. So I emailed Metro Roofing to ask them to come and take a look at the damage and fix it. I got no response. A month later, I called Metro Roofing and left a detailed voice message. Again, I got no response. I called once again and left another voice mail, this time pretending to be a new customer. Finally someone called back and I got to explain the problem in person. I heard a lot of excuses about wind speeds and CRCA specs, but they said they would call back and arrange for an appointment to come and see the damage. They never called back. I called again, this time even offering to pay a service fee, and was again told that someone would call to make an appointment. AGain, big surprise - no call, no contact from them. I even went to their location in Ajax to see if I could talk to someone in person. It's an empty office. I should have known. I have contacted Metro Roofing six times over the course of a year to give them a chance to rectify this problem and they have pretty much ignored me. I'm left with no alternative but to post this review and warn people that METRO ROOFING DOES NOT HONOUR THEIR WARRANTY.

I see a lot of 10 star reviews here, and I'm genuinely happy that some people have had a good experience. But a company or contractor has to be judged on how they handle problems, as well as the easy stuff. Metro Roofing failed to handle my problem. Even if it turned out that the work was done to spec, and that the roof would have failed anyway, it doesn't change the fact that no one from Metro Roofing ever came to inspect the work that I was initially unhappy with, and no one has ever come to look at the failure of the sheet metal work. Unacceptable.
