Front porch railings and third floor railings

They installed the front railings, and third floor railing incorrectly (our two year old would be able to slip around the railing from our third floor railings). They wouldn't respond back to our phone calls, and we couldn't get any answers. When we are finally able to set up approximately 6 different appointments for them to come and fix it, and have paid extra for it... NOBODY SHOWS UP! Today, we waited around all morning clearing out the garage, and the installer somehow said we weren't home. It has been OVER two months, and although we paid to have these issues fixed, they are still outstanding. Nobody at the company seems to be concerned at all, and they DO NOT follow up with us ever! Beyond disappointed! Go anywhere else!

Hopeless

I have never left a review online before but I can't in good conscience let anyone else make the mistake we did: don't EVER use Alpa. We ordered a custom staircase for our basement in October and they began the installation in January. Here are the facts to-date:
- They took 12 weeks to deliver, far more than the "no more than 6-8wks" promised.
- What they delivered was incorrect. A bump-out was required to accommodate a jog in the foundation but they cut it at the wrong place and too short; they cut the treads short leaving a precarious leg-breaker of a hole.
- I have placed more than half a dozen calls in the week since the installation to schedule a repair to limited affect. Still no date.
- when they did install they didn't have the materials needed - we had to go into our garage to find a 2x4 for them.
- their salesman Robert twice provided install weeks but nothing came either time. Turns out they hadn't started to build it 10wks after ordering.
- Robert can't seem to remain organized or follow-up. I have resorted to calling his office to make the arrangements he's incapable of making, such as an installation date.
- Robert came to our house 5 times to take measurements and they still got it wrong.
There are other suppliers in the city of Toronto so I highly recommend you shop around. I will update this review if/when the stairs are repaired to ensure that it captures all the facts and that it is a fair and balanced review of what took place.

Stair Renovation

My experience with Alpa Stairs I have to say was excellent. The salesperson, Robert was a super nice guy and helped us in choosing the right look (pickets and railing) for our home. He told us it would take about 3 weeks for installation when in fact it took 4 weeks but not a big deal considering the cost of the job and I wanted it done right. Once it was completed they looked great. We also went with a company Robert recommended to stain the stairs. Pino was the guy's name and he did a great job. I would definitely recommend Alpa and use them again if and when I needed stairs.

Staircase

This company is a disaster. First of all- do not ever work with Robert, one of their consultant. He blatantly misled me about when my stairs would be installed. I took the day off work and was waiting for the installers to show up only to find out that my stairs hadn't even been made yet. As for the craftsmanship, it's fine but getting the stairs completed was like pulling teeth. Not all the risers were put in at once. They had to come back. When the treads were put in, they had to come back because the carpenter ran out of wood (!) and still had to finish certain areas. That took about three days of waiting. Then when the pickets were installed, they ran out pickets! They had to return the following day to finish that. The experience was beyond frustrating and by far this was the most disorganized company I dealt with for my home reno. They single-handedly delayed my job by a month.

Railing

We had a number of issues. Alpa fixed most concerns in a timely fashion. Install guy was great, Product is good. Scheduling is erratic, not much if any notice before arriving.

Creation and installation of 2 flights of oak stairs

Simply put, Alpa Stairs is a disaster. We dealt with Robert who is a nice guy, but he didn’t seem to understand how measurements worked as he needed to come to our home twice to measure the stairs. Given that, we were extremely surprised that they were both too wide to fit when delivered! We also had to wait a few weeks longer than the time they said they’d be delivered, which is a bit of a pain when you need to climb a ladder to do laundry. The stairs were installed on a funny angle (our toes were higher than our heels when standing on a step), they scratched part of the newly installed floors (which had to be replaced by our contractor), they left massive scratches and serious gouges in the newly painted walls by trying to bang the overly wide stairs into place (now needing a new plaster and paint job). The one set that they did manage to bang in is so tight than it squeaks when you walk on it. We're going to have our contractor cut out the wall on the opposing side to help fix that problem. Also, the stringer stuck out from the wall (into the middle of the room) by about 6 inches. I had originally asked them to round it to the wall but Robert told me that it wouldn’t stick out more than an inch, so it was unnecessary. They took back the one set of stairs to make the sides slimmer. Had we checked the second set before they left (they said they went in fine), we would have asked them to take that set as well. To add to that, they didn’t show up the day they said they would so the work day was taken off for nothing (we got the run around until they finally said they weren’t coming around 4 pm), they then showed up one unplanned morning as we were about to leave for work (again requiring a morning off work), and Robert didn’t show up to “ensure the work was done properly” as he said he would. We called him out to see the damage and he agreed that it was really bad and worse than he thought it would be. We asked him to take pictures to show the general manager and arranged to have someone come to fix the bottom step and level out the stairs (by putting scraps under it to prop it up). Unfortunately, they didn’t do anything about the squeaky steps nor did they give us any reimbursement for the cost of replacing the floor boards, replastering and repainting the walls, or lost wages. I suppose that’s why they take half the money when people place the order and the other half a few days before delivery…so people can’t have any recourse when they do a terrible job. All in all, it was a disaster of an experience and I would strongly recommend avoiding Alpa Stairs.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Teach their sales agents how to measure accurately. Inform their installers that if stairs don't fit in easily, it should be taken back and resized.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Refuse to go with a company that makes you pay the second installment before the work has been completed to your satisfaction.

Stair installation

I had the stairs installed via the builder. The stair treads had many knots in them which then had to be replaced. Replacement caused damage to the risers. It was very difficult to get them to replace the risers with making all kinds of excuses from its looks alright to if we do this we'll do a lot of damage to the drywall. Very disappointed with them and I would not recommend them at all.

stairs creaking

The service man was helpful and friendly but did not seem to do much to resolve the problem. We still have creaking stairs and this needs to be resolved properly. There may be suggestions but no resolutions....what was paid for here?
