Fix furnace and air conditioner

Our air conditioner was broken (I thought) and Tropical came out right away to look at it. The owner Dave came and felt it wasn't the A/C but that the fan in the furnace was not working properly. I was floored - it's a 15+ year old A/C and his honesty was appreciated. His technician Brian came the next day and brought the part with him. All was fixed and both a/c and furnace filters cleaned and tuned. I may get another couple years out of the A/C which is great news.

Furnace Repair

My story starts about five years ago when I bought my house. The furnace broke within the first three months there and I had to get a company in to replace it. I decided to go with Aire One as that is the company which which a friend of mine and his family had had a lot of luck, plus they were the cheapest quote. Aire One subcontracts out their work especially for boilers and it ended up going to a contractor named Jason Talbot. The first problem was during the install when he flooded the upstairs of the house during the furnace refill due to leaving the bleed valve open on the furthest away rad. The water poured all over my computer equipment and wood floors. Aire one told me that because it was subcontracted, they weren't responsible. Later the thermostat was wired backwards so when I went to use the air conditioner in the summer it didn't work. I had to fight with aire one in order to get the thing fixed. A few years have past and a month ago, my furnace quit. I called Tropical Htg and Cooling look at it because it was a serious problem. There was an electrical fire smell. The problem turned out to be that Aire One's subcontractor had wired the aquastat backwards and had not properly secured the ground wire. This caused sparks and some wire melting within the aquastat box. No only did Brian rewire this for me, he also explained to me how the furnace works, what the proper temperatures and pressures were and how to change them. Brian chose to rewire instead of replace because the furnace has been installed so close to the wall that it would require the removal of the furnace to get the aquastat box off which means thousands of dollars in repair costs.

The second problem that Brian found was with the pressure tank. It was leaking water and causing the pressure release tap to run water. Unfortunately that tap was installed on top of the furnace so the water runs out over the whole unit in the event of pressure problems. Brian replaced the tank which I suspect was not replaced by Aire One when they replaced the boiler. It was the old one from my old furnace. I guess they were trying to save some money on my install. Brian also replaced the overflow tap for me and made some recommendations about how to move the tap so that in the event of a pressure build up, it doesn't run water all over the furnace.

Brian also talked to me about all of the things he was doing and why so that I am more educated about the furnace and less over-whelmed when problems occur. I really appreciate the time and attention he gave me as my last experience they didn't tell me anything or leave me any manuals and didn't help me understand how it works so I will know when it is not working.

Sometimes the cheapest quote for the work turns out to be the most expensive, and although Tropical Htg and Cooling may not be the cheapest quote, but you could end up paying a lot more in the end with the cheapest quote. I would never again trust any company that subcontracts out work. And I WILL definitely be calling Tropical Htg and Cooling in the summer for my air conditioner replacement. I look forward to working with Brian again. He has some of the craziest yoga moves I have ever seen and can work on systems in the worst possible install configuratiosn.

Install furnace and air conditioner

About 10 years ago when the government was offering grants to replace furnaces, I had Tropical Heating and Air Conditioning inspect my furnace and inquire about the grants. Two other companies had already given me quotes to replace the furnace. The Tropical representative did a thorough inspection, gave me a quote, and then told me that "to be honest, your furnace is in very good condition" and didn't recommend replacing it. Now years later, it really was time to replace the unit, and I knew who to call. The team from Tropical arrived on time, worked efficiently, took pride in their work and cleaned up after their installation. I am very pleased with their work and product, and would recommend them.

Furnace and Air Conditioner Replacement

With Dave's knowledge, the expertize of the installation crew (NOT sub-contractors) and the support from the their office, I can see why this company has survived in this city for over 25 years. The Lennox equipment is operating beyound our expectations and this company did everything they said they would and more. I would recommend this company to anyone who understands value in what they pay for.

The service was excellent the result perfect but Oh the price!!!
108 for the service call, then another 151 to install a part that is worth only a couple of dollars.

so a 45 minute call cost $259 before tax, thats 340/hour, shame shame shame!

Company Response

It’s unfortunate but the cost to run a good service business these days can be much higher than people expect. The majority of products on the market these days are far more complicated than they were in the past requiring the skill levels of our technicians to be very extensive. Just the cost of getting them to your home to ring the door bell might surprise some people. In our efforts to continually provide a high level of customer service and reliability we pre-quote all of our work using standardized flat rate pricing, much like the automotive industry, except we make house calls. We appreciate receiving all comments from our customers, and have found that the negative ones can be especially helpful in pointing out our shortcomings thus allowing us to find better ways to provide greater value to our customers.

NEW FURANCE - 16 yrs. ago - A/C- new last month

Tropical Heating and A/C did a great job on installing a new furance and complete ductwork 16 years ago and just last month I had them install a new A/C unit. Dave Williams and his team did another outstanding job with total respect for the house and a follow up on setting up the warranty with Lennox. -Thanks to Dave and his team.

New Lennox High Efficiency Furnace

One of the owners came to my house to give me an estimate on a new high efficiency furnace, air cleaner and humidifier. He was very knowledgeable, professional and his pricing was competitive. Based on other reviews on this site, I decided to give him the job.
The installers came on time. They were curteous and professional. They consulted with me on all aspects of the job and got the job done efficiently leaving very little to clean up after they left. The furnace looks beautiful and the fan is very quiet. I anticipate flawless heating this winter and I hope to see savings on my gas bill. Thanks Tropical!

From start to finish, this is one classy, professional company. They take the time to truly consult about your needs. They provide the information so that you can make an informed decision. Their prices are reasonable, their service is exceptional. They turned up when they said they would and did one phenomenal job in the exact time frame they had indicated. Their pride in workmanship shows in all they do. I wouldn't choose any other company!

Furnace cleaning/gas fireplace inspection

The service man was actually one of the owners. He was factual to the point, yet with a personal touch that I have never received when my furnace was inspected. He took the time to inform me about my system and what are some of the things for me to inspect to avoid large replacements.

Furnace repair

Excellent work from an excellent company. The employees that dealt with our problem were very professional, courteous and respectful. The problem was diagnosed and repaired in a timely fashion without any inconvenience to our family. We hope not to have any further problems with our furnace but if we do Tropical will get the call.
