Avonlea Kitchen & Bathroom Concepts

Avonlea did a bathroom renovation in my 75-year old house that involved moving the doorframe to give me more space, gutting the entire bathroom and replacing everything. Though I wasn’t sure about believing online reviews, every good thing I read about this company is true. They were organized, honest and straightforward every step of the way. The job began and finished on time. All my questions were answered thoroughly and immediately. Gabriel cleaned up at the end of every working day, so the disruption/mess that usually comes with a renovation was minimal. Most importantly, the final result speaks for itself. The new bathroom is exactly what I asked for, and the finishes are flawless because Gabriel went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. I don’t have a single negative thing to say about this experience, and I’ll certainly have Avonlea back to do my kitchen in the future.

A year ago Avonlea completed my kitchen reno. They were great to work with and I love the finished product. I have just had them back to do my bathroom and again I am very pleased. They are incredibly tidy and conscientious of looking after the rest of the house, garbage doesn't sit around and they worked fast. I have had several people through my house and all have commented on the quality of the tile work (I'm totally in love with my floors).

John Miles did a great job on our bathroom renovation. Gabriel and his dad were very neat, and they cleaned up at the end of the day. We asked John to repair a couple of small holes in our kitchen ceiling, and he took care of it for us. The job was completed without any issue and we are happy with the result. Avonlea did a superb job on our two bathrooms a couple years ago, so we were really keen to have them work on our kitchen as well. Once again, Gabriel (ably assisted by his dad) and Jay did really excellent work on the tiling, plumbing and preparing the kitchen for cabinet installation. When it comes to the quality of their work, these guys are tops, and they are also likeable people whom it was a pleasure to have in our house. The only thing I would mention is that John Miles really prefers to work with his own cabinetmaker. We chose to install an Ikea kitchen instead, so John was very clear from the outset that he would not install or otherwise have anything to do with the cabinetry. We later discovered that this approach has its downside—there are always going to be minor leftover things to do at the end of the job, but if they involve touching the cabinetry John will refuse to handle them, explaining that he does not want to bear the risk of damaging the cabinets. I can certainly understand this if the cabinet is hand-built out of some valuable wood, but in our case we were working with mass-produced Ikea stuff, so I'm not sure such skittishness was warranted. All we wanted was for the valance to be reattached after we had removed it so Jay could tile the backsplash. As we discussed with Jay, it only required cutting a quarter inch off the wall end of the valance to make room for the tile, and we had even bought an extra length of the decorative strip so there would be plenty at hand should any mistakes be made. After working with us on two previous jobs, I'd hoped John would know we are not the type of people to make a fuss (see next paragraph). In the end, we are having to get Vince Fyfle of Galaxy Wood (who had built some custom cabinets to fit in the gaps) to jump in and complete the work for us.
Another thing is that the contract we signed with John Miles clearly mentioned appliance hook-up. When our Bosch stove was delivered, we realized it weighed a ton, and mentioned it to him as a courtesy. He immediately responded that he was not equipped to install specialized appliances, and that we should hire an expert to do it. The estimate we got from Kovi Appliances was $440, but when I asked John if he would accordingly adjust the amount we owed him, he explained that, even though appliance hook-up is mentioned in the contract, he had not done any special budgeting for it and so there was no reason to change the price. We were okay with this (sort of), although the range of appliances he was prepared to install should perhaps have been discussed at the beginning so we wouldn't have had to search for an installer on short notice.
In the end, we are still very happy with the work that both Gabriel and Jay did. They are really excellent guys. And I should say that John is always very prompt in replying to emails and explaining his position, so at least we knew where we were. But if you are working with another brand of cabinets or buying appliances that are unusual in some way (high-end or heavy), you have to be prepared to go it alone for some parts of the kitchen reno process and to look for other specialists to fill in for work that Avonlea won't do.

FANTASTIC!! Always came on time and when they said they would (John and Gabriel). Reasonably priced. Gabriel was so polite, professional and talented. Came back when I had an issue and dealt with it right away. Such a pleasure to work with this company-I wish all contractors could be like them!

The team at Avonlea did a fantastic job on our bathroom. John came and saw the scope of the work (complete gut job). They setup the timeline to start and complete the job, were there on the first day on time. They are obviously professionals with good time management skills. Mid job we chose to move quite a bit of plumbing to make room for a linen closet. John responded with a new quote right away and the new scope was incorporated without missing a beat. They offered some advice in terms of design but we did not have many options with our bathroom and didn't require much help in the design department. Post job they came back and fixed a few minor issues (mainly dealing with a product design flaw in the tap that wasn't even their fault). all in all they came in on budget, on time and the process was painless on my end. Would totally recommend.

I am extremely impressed by Avonlea. From day one, when John came to give a quote, to the fact that he then left the ball in court, so to speak, for me to get back to him when I was interested (as opposed to chasing up on me), which I did....and was I pleased I did so. John is professional, on time and amicable. He communicates well, always keeping me in the loop and pricing was fair/good compared to other competitors.

His workers are efficient, clean and also very approachable. I worked a lot with Olympu and only have good words for the guy.

I am considering them for a renovation on my kitchen next year due to their high standard of work and reasonable pricing.

My wife and I highly recommend Gabriel for his professional skill and approach over the 12 days renovating our 3rd floor bathroom. He kept us informed every step (and whenever there was a surprise) and went beyond the call of duty coming up with great solutions involving real skill. John dealt with us from the initial specs stage from quoting until completion and was always available. Thought we'd try Avonlea because they are in our area. They did not disappoint! Audrey was very pleasant to deal with and was very helpful. We bought a shower base, shower doors, vanity with stone top, and shower fixtures. They were delivered by two very polite gentlemen who carried everything upstairs to await installation by a third party. Will be going there when we redo our kitchen!
