Stop looking for countertop companies; This is THESE BEST company you will ever deal with!!! The price was phenomenal, 3 cm thick granite for the SAME price as everyone else’s glue & seam. The measuring and installation is flawless. Gustavo helped me pick the perfect colour, Nick spent a great deal of time measuring to get the perfect fit and watching the installers Victor and Kurt work was like watching perfectly choreographed ballet. These are the people you want in your house. I have NEVER been as completely satisfied with a company as I am with Select Granite.

I found Open Sesame on this site; this is the first time I have hired a contractor based solely on HomeStars’ reviews. Quite frankly having Steve replace my garage door is one of the best reno decisions I have made. Our main priority was quality and the R value of the door (over 16) as we have a room above, secondary to this was the colour and design. As it was the door he sold us was the same price regardless of number or style of the panels; we chose the carriage house design and for $85 more we dressed it up with decorative wrought iron hinges and handles. We left off the windows as they would diminish the R value. The door looks great, nothing else like it on the street, in fact while I was putting the garbage out last night I came upon my neighbours admiring it! Steve is an absolute great guy to work with. He genuinely cares about his work and his customers. He goes above and beyond, we had a rafter shelf that would interfere with the new thicker door. With my OK he removed everything off the shelf, cut off two inches, reinstalled the shelf and put all the stuff back again. He also added reinforcement for the garage door opener bracket and replaced a key lock with a secure electronic keypad. He did a great job capping the old woodwork so it’s now maintenance free. The driveway and garage was left clean and free of debris. The price was bang on, from what I could see the big box stores do not sell doors of this quality or of this R value and but yet the cost of their best door with installation would be the about same price. We had to wait for the door and for Steve to have the time to install it, but as we all know the best contractors are busy, they are also worth the wait.

Once again Button’s has done a stellar job in my home. They previously fixed a furnace/AC job that was totally blotched by another company. Mike (who worked on my furnace) and Bill did a great job on my water heater install, protected my carpeted stairs with drop cloths and cleaned up afterwards. They were in and out in about two hours. Button are reliable, trustworthy and genuinely care about their customers and their homes. I was considering have one of the big box stores handle the job, it would have cost me less, but when I started to check out the products I found problems. Despite the national brand name appliance name on the box, they were actually manufactured by the same company and sold under two different names (one for each store) Anyways the water heaters had serious problems with the parts that keep the pilot light lit. The manufacturer was replacing the parts in and outside of the warranty but it seemed the homeowners were responsible for the labour which is quite involved. I don’t need those sort of aggravations, the last tank was there for 23 years and didn’t cost me a dime in service. I checked out the manufacturer of the tank that Button’s was putting in, no issues. I also checked with the husband of a co-worker, a licenced gas fitter who only does commercial work. He told me that Button’s price was reasonable and the tank was reliable. So it may have cost me a couple of hundred more up front, but I saved myself money and aggravation down the road.

Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Always do the research. There's not much that a licenced gas fitter can do to screw up a simple water heater replacement especially if it is the same type and size, however find out about the product they are installing. Changes in technology to make the gas water heaters safer (in this case) has also proven to be a problem for the tanks sold by these two US based big box reno stores. As well make sure your contractor has quick access to parts for the product they are selling you. In Button

This company makes custom covers for BBQ’s, air conditioners patio furniture as well as custom carrying cases. I had a cover made for my air conditioner about 3 years ago because I was dissatisfied with the quality of anything I could find in the stores. The price was about $25 and the quality was fantastic. I come from a house of sewers. I can say that this guy sews vinyl like my mother sewed wedding dresses! I gave the measurement over the phone and he delivered a perfectly fitting cover several days later. He insisted on seeing it on the A/C himself. Perfect fit, and three winters later it looks as good as the day he delivered it! Highly recommend!

This company is the heating and A/C installer for Home Depot in Ajax and may do work for other Home Depots in the region but I can’t be sure. They also operate as Ontario Air Systems, their commercial/industrial division. This was a top of the line matched Furnace and A/C system from Trane. The price was comparative to others for the same system and similar system from other manufacturers. The contract I signed was with Home Depot to take advantage of their no-payment for a year deal. Four return visits, three code violations (subsequently fixed) two threats to sue me and one of the most shoddy examples sheet metal work I’ve ever seen. Code violations: Electrical: no wire clamp on high voltage wiring into the furnace, no rubber grommets on low voltage wiring passing through furnace cabinet. Exhaust pipe to chimney installed reversed (potential for CO leaks). Used galvanized pipe instead of steel for the gas line. (natural gas corrodes galvanized steel. Shoddy work: Too many items to mention but the big issue is that the plenum was twisted and out of plumb by about an inch top to bottom. The hole cut for the boot was too large and too high, leaving gaps and causing the main trunk to be out of level and skewed to one side. Home Depot has agreed to pay for another contractor to fix this, however I may have to pay the contractor and they would reimburse me by applying the amount to my account, I am out of pocket until Dec. 15th of this year.

Company Response

Dear Toolman in Highland Creek,
Thank you for your comments although I am surprised and somewhat disappointed that you did not speak with me directly to make me aware that you are still unhappy with the steps my company has taken to resolve your issues. Thus far, haven't I responded quickly to your concerns? You may recall, when we first met to discuss your concerns I admitted that the standard of the work in your home did not meet my high standards and I therefor agreed to attend to the issues, which we did. After the remedial work was completed, I understood from you personally thatyou were satisfied with the resulting installation. I was therefor surprised to hear that you were still disatisfied and so we met again, I agreed to install a flex duct collar because you believed it would permit the plenum to sit straight. It didn't, but I again believed you were happy with the result and our committment to try to have a happy customer, especially when you and I discovered that the existing supply and return ducts which the plenums connect to, are out of parralel by up to 1 1/2 in 10 feet, contributing to the issue of not having both plenums square. When I received a phone call from my Home Depot installation manager, to inform me he had met with you and he believed all that was needed to satisfy your concerns was a few extra sheetmetal screws in the plenum, I agreed to meet him over at your home and resolve your ongoing issue.

The screws didn't work, you were still unhappy, and so, in desperation to see you become a customer who had experienced Compass Home Services, and Home Depot's committment to Doing it Right, we offered to pay for you to have a contractor of your choice correct the problem at our reasonable expense.
Earlier today, I hand delivered my personal committment to fulfill the above.
Please take advantage of my offer. I believe it is the only way you will be able to appreciate how much our committment to customer satisfaction means to our entire organization.
Warm Regards

Bob Steenson, President of Compass Home Services Inc.
