We hired Monkey Tree Services to trim a number of trees in both yards and I couldn’t be happier with Joel and his crew. The quote was very detailed and not only fair, but slightly less than a couple of other major tree cutters in the area. Everyone was friendly and professional from beginning to end. And they did a great job, exactly as discussed. In fact, I asked them to trim a few extra branches here and there and they were more than willing to take care of it – no hesitation or angling for extra money. If I could give these guys bonus stars, I would! Thank you Joel, we’ll definitely hire you again next time.

We’ve used 4 alarm companies over the years, not because we switch all the time but because they keep getting bought out. This is actually the first time we’ve switched of our own accord. Parts of our 25 year-old equipment were failing so we needed to replace much of our alarm system and also decided it was time to install a security camera system. We researched all the various systems and the latest technology. We also reviewed numerous security companies, large and small, and got several quotes. In the end, Canadian Security Professionals (CSP) stood out from the rest of the pack; it wasn’t even close. First of all, CSP didn’t have any limitations on meeting the needs we were looking for. Some other companies could only do parts of the job but CSP was able to handle every facet of the job and with the best equipment available. Wired, wireless, it didn’t matter. CSP was able to integrate any new equipment we wanted with everything that was worth keeping from our old system. In the end, we ended up with a customized system that met every need. But what has really set CSP apart from every other company we’ve used or considered hiring is customer service. Just getting a call-back from some companies was next to impossible. And one company owner actually refused to come to the house to review our situation without a commitment because he didn’t want us to pilfer his ideas just to install everything ourselves! CSP, on the other hand, spent hours discussing and designing the best system possible, all subject to our approval based on costs quoted up front. We’ve had our new system for a couple of months now and continue to be impressed. The support staff have been excellent. Whether you have an account question or a technical concern, you can always talk to someone right away, even when the issue isn’t urgent. If you’re looking for outstanding personal service, the type that is rarely seen any more, we can’t recommend CSP highly enough.

We had two problems with our Samsung Range, a door issue and a broken motor on one of the convection fans. Jamie the repair technician was great. He arrived during the appointment window promised and was very personable. He had to make an extra trip because of Samsung’s confusion over which part he required (they no longer make the original part) but he stuck to the quote and didn’t upcharge us for it. Afterwards, we received a follow-up email from Shelly, Ben’s Customer Service Pro, to make sure we were satisfied with everything. We will definitely call Ben’s the next time we need an appliance repaired.

I used Lam's to replace a bent window screen and purchase screen clips. The new screen was prepared quickly and fit perfectly. Best of all, he had metal screen clips which are almost impossible to find these days. Most places sell the pastic ones which are brittle and don't fit as well. In fact, those plastic clips are the reason the screen got bent in the first place. I decided to replace all my clips so it won't happen again. The owner of the company, Stephen, was very friendly and easy to get in touch with. I'll definitely go to Lam's for all future window screen needs.

We hired DMC to completely renovate our two main bathrooms and we couldn’t be happier with the result. Our first contact with DMC was at the home show where the staff were friendly and very easy to talk to. We subsequently requested an estimate and met with Trevor at our home to discuss ideas. We had already done a lot of research so we were well prepared in terms of the project’s scope. Overall, we got estimates from at least a half dozen companies, although we probably spoke with twice that number in total. Many other so-called reliable, award-winning companies with good reviews – even those approved by notable TV design show personalities – didn’t show up or showed up but then failed to provide an estimate. This lack of professionalism is not uncommon in our experience, so we are very cynical about the construction industry in the Lower Mainland. We don’t give a perfect score to DMC lightly. In fact, we wanted to post reviews of companies that either didn’t show up for the estimate appointment or that showed up for the appointment but didn’t follow through with the estimate afterwards, however, HomeStars doesn’t allow that. Anyway, after reviewing all of the estimates that we did get, we only seriously considered hiring two companies. In the end, though, we chose DMC for several reasons. The first reason was Trevor, who was not only extremely personable but engaged in our project right from the beginning. This was in stark contrast to most of the other estimators we met from other companies who seemed in a hurry to take a look and get to the next appointment as quickly as possible. The second reason was meeting Dan, the owner of the company. We found him to be very personable as well, but also knowledgeable and professional. As a homeowner, you want to form that relationship with someone who is easy to get along with but also knows what they’re doing. It’s about finding that balance, that comfort level, and after meeting Trevor and Dan we knew we had found it with DMC. The third reason we hired DMC was price point. Most of the estimates we got were similar, having contacted companies with established reputations. DMC was about the mid-point but we knew we weren’t going to be happy with a company that charged less but cut corners. We wanted a quality company that would deliver on their promises and that’s exactly what we got. Dan presented us with a very detailed contract, which pleased us because the last thing we wanted were surprises along the way. We actually suggested some of our own detail just to make sure certain aspects of the job were clear and Dan readily incorporated them into the final draft. On day one we met Jay who was our foreman for the job and we can’t stress enough how fortunate we were to get him. He was personable, knowledgeable, hardworking, a great communicator—everything you could ask for. His job was to manage the project on site but he also did a fair amount work himself. Jay has two qualities that really stood out. One, he’s all about keeping the customer happy. Our satisfaction was his top priority. Two, Jay is an excellent problem solver. With a job as big as ours, snags are bound to crop up and, when they did, Jay always came up with a solution. He was excellent at thinking outside of the box. His innovative approach extended to suggestions throughout the process, little things that increased our satisfaction with the end product based on his experience. As for the trades people, some were employees of DMC and some were employed by other companies that DMC had pre-screened and had worked with in the past. Either way, all were trustworthy and did quality work. The tiler, for example, went out of his way to make sure the marbling in each tile lined up with the next and in the same direction as the flow of water from the showerhead. It created an effect that we’re very happy with and it’s not even something we had asked him to do. The drywall mudder was also noteworthy in keeping the dust to a minimum. He was so good at applying the compound that very little sanding was required once it was dry. All staff were neat and tidy and respected our space. One thing we really liked about DMC is their flexibility. They recommended suppliers but we had full control to purchase from anyone we wished, whether it was a different cabinet maker or buying something ourselves from Costco or online. The only risk was making sure we had everything ready when it was time to be installed or we’d be on the hook for delaying the project. This never happened to us but it’s worth noting for future customers. The complete job took a couple weeks longer than targeted but was still within the extended window DMC initially advised. Throughout the process, Dan was on top of it all with weekly visits to make sure everything ran smoothly and to our satisfaction. Towards the end of the project, we identified some minor deficiencies such as paint touch-up, a sticky window screen, etc., but everything got addressed right away. They were happy to take care of it all without any pushback whatsoever. And even now that the job is finished and paid for, we’ve been advised to let them know if we notice anything else that needs addressing. We definitely found DMC to be trustworthy. We highly recommend them and would hire them again ourselves.

During a major rainstorm, our drains backed up and the basement flooded. I called several plumbers but all refused to come out without paying a $1000 premium to drop their current jobs. Finally, I called Pioneer on the recommendation of a contractor friend and they dropped everything to come out right away. They were able to snake the drain, pump the water out and subsequently repair the problem area so it wont happen again. I mainly dealt with Justin and he was the best. He was friendly, knowledgeable and always just a phone call away. I can't thank them enough for preventing a mini disaster from turning into a major disaster. And, unlike the other well-known drainage and plumbing companies I called, they didn't try to profit off my situation. I give Pioneer my highest recommendation. UPDATE: Since the above review was posted, I've used Pioneer as my go-to plumbing and gas service on numerous occasions. The service has always been good; however, they provided an HVAC consultation and the service was less than satisfactory. First of all, the consultant advised I couldn't install a high efficiency air conditioner without replacing my mid efficiency furnace. He said the furnace doesn't blow enough air to supply the A/C unit so it could freeze and damage the A/C coil. I contacted both the manufacturer of the furnace and the manufacturer of the air conditioner -- both stated unequivocally that this was false. Secondly, the consultant seemed bothered by having to answer several questions, but we're talking about a $30,000 job so I'm not about to hire someone without knowing all the details. I eventually received 6 quotes and one other consultant was the same way. The other 4 were more than happy to answer all questions. I was told it would take a week to get the quote but I hadn't received it after 2 weeks so I followed up. The office apologized and said they'd refer it to the HVAC department but still the quote never came. I was very disappointed, especially given I was a loyal repeat customer of several years. I was informed Justin has left the company, so perhaps that has something to do with it. In any event, I can no longer recommend Pioneer and although I was able to find a good HVAC contractor, I now need to find a new plumber as well.

I hired Pristine to do tackle several jobs at once. Daniel and Michael replaced my hot water heater, PRV, main shut-off valve and toilet fill valve. Getting an estimate was easy and they stuck to it despite running into a few issues here and there. Their price was competitive, neither high nor low, based on other quotes I received. They were both professional, courteous and a pleasure to deal with. Daniel was easy to get a hold of and returned calls promptly. Top marks – thank you.

We hired HeatWorks to repair our furnace. Tyler showed up on time, identified the problem and made the repairs quickly. In addition to replacing the motor, he also cleaned the rest of the unit at no extra charge. We’re happy to recommend HeatWorks for any furnace work.

Weed Man did a good job of maintaining our lawn. As promised, they always returned to respray weeds if necesary, albeit not always immediately. Unfortunately, despite the quality lawn care, their telemarketing team drove us crazy. Eventually, we got so fed up with their non-stop, high pressure sales tactics that we switched to a different company. We now pay more for lawn care but it's worth the peace of mind of not having to deal with their incessant phone calls.

I can’t recommend Alpha & Omega highly enough. We had an unusually difficult job and Matt was able to save the day! He was honest, friendly, fair on price, versatile (stippling, cabinets, etc.), showed up on time, answered his phone, did great work fast, cleaned everything up and didn’t ask for a cent until we were 100% satisfied. Even after everything was finished he kept asking if there was anything more he could do for us. I wish all the trades we hire were this good. I will use Alpha & Omega again and recommend them to everyone. Thank you Matt!!!

FirstOnSite did a great job on the initial cleanup. They were fast and efficient and provided much needed reassurance after experiencing disaster. Unfortunately, their finishing contractor was not up to the same standard. Some of the finishing work was fine but some of it was absolutely terrible. Worse, he complained about the job the entire time, as if he was the one who had suffered the loss. The company's communication was good at first as well, but dried up when I had complaints about the finishing.
