Purchased a backup power generator from Aurora Generators. I did not know much about whole home backup generators until I found this company. Their website was full of information, photos and videos. Aurora Generators reviews were really good so I decided to contact them. I ended up getting a really small silent diesel generator that is clean and quiet. Aurora Generators showed me the difference between natural gas, propane and diesel. If I went with natural gas I would be paying twice as much in fuel. I had no idea there was such a big cost savings with diesel. I also did not know that the diesels were rated at 20,000 hours life where the gas I was looking at I'd be lucky to get 2000 hours out of it. Installation was done by an electrician who installed a transfer switch. Were were shown how to use it so when the power fails we can easily get our home back up and running again. Aurora was really helpful and I was surprised to find out that they actually manufacture here in York Region. I'm happy to be supporting local business. Hard to find made in Canada products these days.

Approximate cost of services:
$8,555.00
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Do some research. Make sure the generator can be run full time and for how long before it needs to be replaced and how long between oil changes.

Needed some faucets changed and called Harris Plumbing. Someone was available the same day. Very professional from start to finish. Harris Plumbing updated me when someone was to arrive and a follow-up to check on quality of service. Service was top notch. The plumber cleaned up after himself and was very polite. I would use them again.

Approximate cost of services:
$1,000.00

Hickory Dickory Decks does not complete the work. They failed to build our deck according to building codes says our town building inspector. They failed to call the inspector after the work was completed to have it inspected. Now a few years later the town is after us to made changes to it. Hickory Dickory Decks is ignoring us and says it is their contractors who are not in business anymore. The warranty is with them not Hickory Dickory Decks. Buyer beware, they push off these matters to their employees or contractors. My contact is with them. I don't care who they hire to work for them. They are now ignoring phone calls and my emails to them. I see other complaints registered with the BBB and I've done the same. Next step is small claims court. UPDATE:March 22 2012 YOU applied to the Town of Aurora for a work permit and YOU did NOT call and close it after the work was done. If you did, they would have been here to inspect it. The permit is under your name and the work is under your company name. Hickory Dickory Decks is "a franchise system and the deck was built by a franchisee that is no longer in business" So what your really telling customers is that others can use your name, you apply for construction permits but don't stand behind the work. Just blame it on a franchisee. Wow, I'm sure this will make other feel much better about dealing with your company. Great way to wash your hands of any problems.

Company Response

Hello Ron,

While we respect your opinion and comments we would like to add a few of our own.

1. The deck was built to Ontario Building Code Standards. The issue is with a local privacy by-law specific to Aurora. As stated in previous contact we are willing to work with you on this issue.

2. We do not push off matters to our employees. We are a franchise system and the deck was built by a franhcisee that is no longer in business. The franchisee is not a hired contractor or employee. He owned his own business and was self-employed. As the Head Office franchisor we are happy to work with people to address issues but we cannot be expected to work for free. It is only years later that the city of Aurora has notified you of a local privacy by-law.

3. One of our managers in charge of repairs has been in contact and tried to resolve the situation.

Please call the Head Office 1-800-263-4774 if you would like to try and further resolve the issue at hand.

Thank-you,

Hickory Dickory Decks Management
