Bathroom remodel

We hired Yoram to act as the general for helping us with a 1.5 bathroom renos.

Yoram came exactly on time for when he said he would be for the initial quote and made appearances throughout the project to check on the status and assist with some finishing touches himself such as trim and transition pieces. He was prompt and for the most part, professional. Yoram met us at the tile store and made some worthy suggestions of tiles and helped us pick out a matching black shower kit to go with our Costco purchased floor and sliding glass door. Yoram agreed to work with the already purchased shower floor base and sliding glass door from Costco as he wasnt able to compete with the pricing they offered and recognized that we wouldn't be moving forward if we weren't able to use them due to our budget.

Yoram brought in a fabulous glass installer and plumber. Very kind, knowledgeable and trustworthy. I would wholeheartedly recommend both of these subtrades.

The tile work is the instance where we had some issues, and mostly the reason for my lower review. Since Yoram acted as the general in this project, I hold him to be accountable for his subtrades. The tilers did fine work, but they required some considerable follow-up. They did waterproof everything properly and poured self-levelling and put in a level floor, but I had to follow up with them multiple times about not smoking near right outside our front door and making our house smell like smoke, cutting tile in our garage and getting everything covered in dust when they were specifically directed on multiple occasions by myself and Yoram not to do so, and final quality of the tiles installed. There is some lippage on the wall tiles installed in our shower and some small sections of missing grout still, but nothing that makes it either functionally not usable, or was easily resolved myself.

For examples of the issues we had and reasons for docked stars on our review, on one particularly difficult cut of tile, after wasting 3 pieces, the tile installer tried to pass off a completely cracked tile as adequate because he was having a hard time cutting it without it cracking. He showed it to me and asked if I was satisfied with the cracked, installed tile, to which I said absolutely not. In the end, this was resolved by picking up more tile and getting the installer to do the tricky piece in two separate pieces but not before Yoram accused us of picking out a cheap tile that was hard to work with, even though it was one of the recommendations he made to us at the tile store. A second example of an issue I had with the tiler was him not taping off our ceiling before putting in grout along the top of the tile where the tile meets the ceiling, which resulted in our ceiling needing painting because the white ceiling had turned dark grey along the entire perimeter of the shower. This was resolved through a small financial concession by Yoram and the tiler to account for me having to go out and buy new paint and paint the ceiling when they were done.

Yoram made himself available whenever I texted him or called to talk through problems attempt to come up with resolutions. He also offered his advise on some ways to finish the project such as priming drywall spots, removing a large mirror in one piece and filling in drywall behind the tile they had to build up off the wall to make it level. This was above and beyond what was agreed as I had brought him in just to tile, plumb, and install the glass & trim, while I did the finishing touches, painting, drywall patching, fan and light fixture myself.

While I recognize I can be a picky client and hold trades to a high standard, this was clearly translated to Yoram before he agreed to take the job. I believe there is some room for improvement in the subtrades that Yoram contracts out to, particularly his tilers, and also some room for professional conflict resolution improvement for when Yoram gets upset about a situation and disagrees with his client. All things considered, I am happy with the work performed and would consider using him again for a future project.
