Poorly Done Install But Customer Service Prevailed

I contacted Home Zilla to install a chimney style kitchen fan. After reading the manufacturer instructions I knew I had to do some work prior to them coming over as there was no way they would be able to put in the wall support, add an electrical receptacle, patch and paint the drywall and mount the fan all in one day. So I did everything myself but was having trouble lining up the duct work - I just couldn't get it to work. I did 90% of the job so I called them again and had an appointment booked for this past Friday between 2-4. They call and tell me their technician - who I was told is their best by the way - would be an hour late. He shows up at 7 pm on a Friday - I knew it was going to be a rush job and poorly done and that's how it turned out.

In the end they didn't charge me (waived the $85 service fee) after some back and forth. I was told today the technician is no longer working for them.

While you can't always tell in this business who is competent or not at least Dan from Home Zilla reached out and made it right by not charging me for something that was poorly done.

Hopefully my experience is not one others have encountered. The quality of work from this technician was very poor but the customer service from the company salvaged my view of them.

Kitchen Fan Install Gone Wrong!

What can I say other than to stay away from this company. I needed to get a kitchen hood fan installed- they wanted $300. After reading the manufacturer instructions I knew I had to put some support in the wall for the mounting bracket. I even added a electrical receptacle for the plug. I patched up the drywall and all I now needed from HomeZilla was to connect the ducting as it wasn't lining up and I couldn't get it to work. I did 90% of the job. So I called them again and had an appointment booked for this past Friday between 2-4. They call and tell me their technician (Strongman) - who I was told is their best by the way - would be an hour late. He shows up at 7 pm on a Friday - I knew it was going to be a rush job and poorly done and that's how it turned out.

He comes in, uses my tools, my supplies, doesn't bother to put a drywall plug in one of the holes for the top guide bracket for the decorative flu. His wife's waiting in the car and she has to come into the house because it's too cold outside and it's taking longer than expected. I then had to go back out to the store and get semi-rigid ducting. I help him on the outside of the house holding the end pipe and wall cap in place and I'm mounting the wall cap at 9 pm in the dark at the side of the house. He tells me he's done and leaves a mess (because at this point it's late and he's tired). After he's gone I go in to check his work pull, back the insulation to look at the duct work and test the seals and air flow. The ducting is crumpled and when I turned on the exhaust fan the insulation starts blowing around. Obviously the air is exhausting into the wall and not out of the house! What a hack job and they claim this guy does commercial installs. He was there for 2+ hours. I had to hire another guy who came in from Kijiji and installed it in under two hours with rigid pipe.

Then they have the nerve to charge me an $85 service fee. Well Dan, I hope the service fee was worth the cost of this review.

Those looking at hiring this company I would warn to stay away - unless you want to witness AMATEUR HOUR (or two) first hand.
