I am a little angry at myself about this job. I had a roof leak, and in the basement beneath the leak, we developed a nasty smell of mold. I wanted to get a test done, but agreed that the problem must have been mold behind the drywall. So we skipped the test and had the wall removed. No mold was present. The experienced and helpful Charles suggested the problem could be a slightly leaky wax seal on the toilet above the same area. So I spent a lot of money for a potentially wrong fix, especially if it is as simple as the toilet. I can't fault the company for doing what I hired them to do. But if I had done the test first, I could have saved a lot of aggravation and $2000. On the other hand, it could indeed be that the drywall had absorbed some nasty smell. Time will tell.

It is unfortunate you do not feel 100% comfortable with the actions necessary to identify and remedy the issue, but we do stand behind the route we decided to take to ensure the best outcome for your job. The removal of the drywall is always something we would have done/recommended in this circumstance. This was the only way to rule out if there was any issue in behind the wall based on the information provided to us and the inspection.
We performed a full mould remediation cleaning in the contained area including under the toilet as well as a few additional precautionary measures (fogging outside the containment). This job, even if the air report came back clean, would have still been done the same way to ensure there was no issue behind the drywall which could have been giving off that smell. Mould being present in the air is not the only indicator to there being a problem, but rather another indicator of how much the area is contaminated, and to give you a clear indicator that our job was indeed completed to a clean level.
