Paint job cracked/ poor prep work

In early fall I decided to do a redecoration of my condo which included painting of my living room, hall way and kitchen. I had contacted a few painters amongst them Top Shelf. The owner came out and seemed professional. His quote was in the middle range, however after all was said and done with the add ons (an extra coat, hall cupboard painted) that I did agree to, the cost was only $200 less than the more experienced company. In retrospect I should have gone with the more experienced company who would have done a better job. Within 6 weeks of the paint job the areas that were suppose to have been prepped all
cracked. I contacted the owner who was away at the time an told him.
Initially his response was apologetic and said this should never happen
but shortly after he became rude and started making excuses. I had to
wait 3 weeks for him to return even though he had no intention of doing
the repairs himself and felt he should.have sent someone out to repair
it right away. He changed dates and time on me after I booked days off
work and the day he wa suppose to come out he even made the excuse
that his car wouldnt start. I had to call so many time to ensure he was coming out and he even gave me grief about that. His job manager came
out eventually and didthe repairsbut you cAn still see the cracking in few areas. When I called the owner to tell him more repair work neeed to be done, he then replied with " we are not coming out and to,d me if I'm not satisfied to Contact another contractor at my own expense. He then went on to give more excuses saying that it was due to settling, to dryness, and numerous other excuses. Ive had many paint jobs done In the numerous home that I have owned and have never seen paint cracking like this. I had to call repeatedly , purchase my own drop
sheets, cover my own furniture for the repair or it wouldn't have been
done in a timely fashion, and put up with the owners rudeness. The
painter also got paint all over my expensive hardwood floors which he
did eventually have removed. I subsequently found out from the
manager who told me that the majority of painters who did my condo
were subsequently fired due to not being good painters. The owner
never checked the painters work and in the end with a cracked paint
job where I will need to pay more money to have it repaired properly.
The owner even said to me that I was micromanaging the job.
Unfortunately I had to in order to ensure it was done properly because
no one was doing this. I would never hire them again . To me the mark of
a professional company is not how they react when thing go smoothly
but rather how they react when things run into problems. This company
failed miserably. Initially right after the paint job I had given a very
positive review but then the cracking started. I'm so upset!

Approximate cost of services:
$3,400.00

Company Response

Hi Lori,

As discussed, we came back multiple time to fix any problems that we're caused by our team. The problems were minor and easily missed on the first walk around when we completed the job due to what I would guess was poor lighting.

The problems have all been fixed that were caused by us and as our countless other reviews state, we are committed to ensuring our clients receive a high quality project.

I believe that your additional requests were extremely unreasonable & the cracking was likely due to a moisture issue in your condo because we definitely follow proper preparation procedures.

You watched over the shoulder of our painters and each of my painters reported feeling micromanaged on an ongoing basis and that they weren't left alone to do the professional job that they were committed to doing for you. I am convinced they are right considering you would call 4 times in a row when I didn't answer due to being in a meeting & called me more than 5 times a day every day we were doing the project.

The delay in me coming in to see the issues was due to being out of country as discussed prior to my leaving. When I left you were thrilled with the project stating "Top Shelf is really Top Shelf" (I have a screen shot of your original 10/10 review where you said this!)

I was not rude, I simply stated the problems were out of our control and we are not responsible to come back and fix them. Top Shelf Painting is founded on a value system of taking care of our customers. However we cannot make issues go away that are preexisting due to factors out of our control.

There was paint on one area of the floor and it was dealt as discussed & the painters were let go of in an effort to take our team to the next level, however they were still good painters and that was not a factor that effected this job.

We really do wish you all the best Lori!
