John did an excellent job with my project, and I highly recommend his services.
In my line of work, I engage with a lot of contractors. Good contractors are skilled in their craft, fair in their wages and stick to the agreed schedule. In all these categories, John met and in some cases exceeded my expectations. No project is straight forward, and ours certainly wasn’t either. But it proved how John worked as a partner to both parties’ satisfaction. I’d like to share 2 specific examples of project obstacles and how they were resolved. I believe this is valuable.
Firstly the main color we chose was near white. John had originally quoted us for priming + 2 coats, but the existing walls were dark beige and the color would have bled through. John brought this to our attention BEFORE he started work and offered options: 1) tint the color a darker shade to keep the original budget, or 2) incur an extra for additional coats. In the end, we opted for Option 2. The price of the extra was fair.
Second due to the extra work required per first obstacle, schedule was becoming tight. We were moving in soon and we needed the painting done. John stayed late on 2 nights (in one case, past midnight) to get the job done on schedule.
Throughout the project, John took pride in his work and went the extra mile to make sure everything looked right. His contract documents were clear and prompt, and his final invoicing was detailed and backed up with receipts – a note that John charges labor + paint, not a flat fee.
Details on the photos attached:
- We had awful custom shelves that came with our unit. The landlord would not allow us to remove them. The wood was not attached to the wall, so John used silicone to feign a more complete look. The shelves are still awful, but John's efforts made it much more tolerable. John did this for us without charge.
- A good chunk of our wall had the existing paint flaking off. It was deep, and required a careful plaster job to match the existing thickness around it. The final result was perfect - you honestly can't tell there was an issue. John charged a small extra for this work.
- In some areas, we had uneven plaster. It was very noticeable when we viewed the apartment, and one of the main reasons I wanted to hire a painter. John was diligent in his attempts to smooth out the bumps, and had a high degree of success. This was included in our original workplan and quote.
Thanks for all your hard work John, and all the best.
