Buyer Beware: Extremely Misled, Poor Service, Incomplete Move

Moving is already a stressful and expensive experience, but Burly Boyz made it a nightmare.

The person who quoted the move was extremely capable and personable, and we spoke at length. She took down all the details of my old home, an inventory of furniture that needed to be moved, and of the other items in my home. I spoke about how extremely busy my work calendar was, and because of this, opted to purchase the additional service of packing. All the information needed was provided, and a quote was prepared, totalling approximately $4,521.98 for the packing, packing materials, move, storage for one month, and move to a secondary location.

The day before the pack and move, I was called and informed that the delivery driver would not be able to attend on the day of. What I was not told was that this would also remove one person from the packing team. The two individuals who did arrive walked in and the first thing they said is oh half the stuff is already gone; this will be easy. They lacked complete urgency in any of the tasks they completed for the remainder of the day; they went randomly from room to room packing items; they did not label boxes; they did not properly pack items. They did not group items in any appropriate pattern or order.

I was told I had to be present for the entire pack and load day, which was quoted for 9 hours. I arranged childcare and pet needs accordingly. At 9pm that night, I had family members come over and we began packing and moving items in an effort to complete the move in one day. I was then told that the movers do not work on Sundays, and they would finish the move on Monday.

The entire purpose for utilizing the packing and move services, and for scheduling the move on a Saturday, was to not impact my work schedule. I now had an entirely new team show up on Monday and despite me moving everything into the garage, and packing the remaining items on Sunday night, it still took the crew an entire day. The last remaining item in the house was my piano an inventory item that was declared during the quote, and that was visible on Saturday during the entire move, and all day on Monday. At 2pm on Monday, I received a call saying that they would not be moving my piano. That was it, that was all. This was incredibly upsetting this could have been flagged much earlier in the process. Instead, I was given less than 12 hours notice before the possession date to produce an alternate solution. A solution that then cost me $800 (and another day off work) to execute.

On the day of the move, the terrible packing service was fully realized including by your own staff who said they would be having words with the packers. Nothing was labelled, making it impossible for items to be moved to the correct rooms. Every box had to be opened in the garage, verified, and then moved to a new location. I was personally writing on boxes what room they were from and going to. It took so long that most boxes were just left in the garage, and I had to personally move them when I was unpacking. It was also apparent how poor the packing is items were thrown into boxes with minimal packing materials, and not grouped with like minded materials. This also resulted in damage to many items.

Also extremely disappointing was the damage to walls particularly the damage to the bedroom wall. Rather than the movers pointing out that they had caused damage to the walls, they positioned furniture in front of the damage, and I didnt find it until after the movers had left. Further, the damage to the main wall occurred when one mover said to the other careful stop youre going to damage the wall.

Total damages to property and the home are estimated at $900.

Final charges to me was over $6,600 a whopping $2,100 over the original estimate and I was given no choice but to pay and take it up with the company after the fact, which feels like extortion. Plus the additional $800 I had to pay for another company to complete the move.

These final charges included:
Two foam TV kits, which were never received or used. The tvs were put into boxes with no additional support or wrapping.
Duplication of costs included local relocation services and local relocation travel time due to the inability of the first inept crew to complete their job on time.

These charges dont consider my personal time, the impact it had on my work schedule, and the mental and emotional toll it took.

When I brought all of this to the attention of the company, I was told it would be 4-6 weeks for a response; a ridiculously long time given the detail of my issues and photo evidence.

Approximate cost of services:
$6,600.00
