Radon mitigation

Highly recommend. Excellent work. Excellent customer service. Great people.

Radon West carried out a sub-slab depressurization at our home. They explained the work in detail. They were explicit in testing before and after. The home was left looking clean and professional, both inside and out.

In addition, we learned about their expertise on the national stage - training other radon mitigation providers across Canada.

Radon mitigation project at my home.

Radon West is one of the most professional, knowledgeable firms that I have ever hired for a home service.

From the initial conversations, to an on-site evaluation of potential basement locations for my mitigation, to the flawless execution of my mitigation installation, I was throughly impressed with Radon West.

I would not hesitate for a moment to recommend Radon West for the science and approach that Radon West brings to radon mitigation.

Thank you, Radon West! I am very happy with my service.

Professional & Instructive Installation

We conducted our first radon test nearly two years ago. At the time, it was quite low, and Renata was extremely helpful. She patiently walked me through all of our options, and I decided, because our number was quite low, to hold-off on the mitigation work.

Fast forward to October of 2020, we retested and discovered, although we were still well below the Health Canada guideline of 200 Bq/m3, our radon number had doubled to 130 Bq/m3. At that point, we decided to proceed with the mitigation.

From the site assessment to the installation, Radon West was professional and extremely patient, explaining the work that was being performed to reduce radon in our home. Colin and Renata are knowledgeable, trustworthy and dedicated to the work they're doing in this field. Radon West did an amazing job! Top marks all around; I have 100% comfort in recommending them to other clients.

DIY Radon Installation

This is a DIY radon installation review with Radon-Kit purchased from RadonWest.
RadonWest supplies the Fan and all the parts to install yourself. Renata will answer all your radon DIY questions. She will advise and mentor you about coring your basement, best practices for excavating under the slab, fan selection, clearance requirements, noise reduction, energy consumption and best practices for installation.
You can purchase their DIY kit or you can buy à la carte products from them. You can DIY for about $960 complete, $675 of that is the kit. They don't do the coring, however I recommend ABC Coring as they are quick and affordable. The gas-vent pvc piping and fittings are available at Lowes. With their variable-speed fan, I dropped my levels down to 12 Bq/m³

Renata had no problems answering all my many email questions I had. All the advice she provided was more than worth the value of the products.
I highly recommend RadonWest if you are somewhat handy and would like to save on your radon installation. And if you're not handy, they do install and will do a complete radon analysis first.

Hi Dave, thanks for reviewing your DIY experience. While we always recommend using a C-NRPP certified professional we do think everyone should be able to reduce their radon levels in their home and will supply information to make sure it is a safe system and it follows proper clearances according to CAN/CGSB-149.12-2017. A DIY system is a different system than a certified system as it basically just the construction, a certified system is quite technical and the fan is sized according to the home operation. Not all DIY systems work but yours has been a success, congratulations. Make sure you keep monitoring your levels in all seasons to ensure the fan is not overcome by your building pressures. All the best for 2021! The Radon West Team.

Radon Mitigation

We had extremely high levels of mitigation and Radon West was able to obtain results that are well below Health Canada Recommendations. Our house was a bit of a "problem house" in that we didn't get the results we were looking for after installing a fan and a seal around our sump pump. I contacted Colin and Renata and they were able to get us re-booked within days. They were then able to lower the levels further by cutting in behind our baseboards and sealing the frame of the house to the foundation. Results come down immediately and have been fairly stable ever since. I highly recommend this company for anyone who needs mitigation work done.

Hi Scott, thanks for leaving the review and details. In some cases we have to go into finished spaces to achieve great post-mitigation levels, it really has to do with your unique home, construction, and the air measurements above and below the slab. The diagnostics tell us what needs to be done, there is a science to radon mitigation! We could see at the first step you were losing air around the perimeter joint which was shortcutting the system. Happy we could solve the problem and you are achieving low concentrations. Thanks for submitting a review, it is appreciated. Thank you.

Successful Radon Mitigation

Being the analytical type, I researched this project extensively with the original intent of possibly doing it myself. Nevertheless, I decided to get three quotes just the same and it was then that I met Renata from Radon West. I tend to ask a lot of questions and I can often sense when someone is starting to tire of me. Not so with Renata. In addition to her wealth of knowledge regarding radon gas, she is extremely generous with her time, having spent one hour on the phone plus an additional 3 hours at my home discussing this project. She even gave me suggestions on what I should do if I chose to go the DIY route. I decided to give this project to Radon West because I truly believed that they would do the best job from a technical point of view (and certainly more than I could do).

My expectations were more than met when Colin came out to do the installation work. He was courteous, extremely knowledgeable and was happy to explain everything he did as the project progressed. What impressed me the most was his approach to the job. He had the attitude of a scientist and spent the first few hours doing tests to determine the best location and design for the mitigation system. He has an array of expensive tools, like a ground penetrating radar machine, to tackle challenges like the in-floor heating in my house. Unlike some other contractors, Colin looked for the best solution in my case even though it was more work, time and expense for him, yet still honoring the original quote.

In conclusion, the radon mitigation project was successful. It reduced my radon levels from the mid 200's (248-258) to 20 Bq/m3 after a 7 day test post-mitigation. On one day the reading was as low as 6 Bq/m3. This was achieved using the lowest energy design possible.

Finally, I would like to mention that both Colin and Renata (Renata joined Colin later in the day) left my house clean. Furthermore, during these Covid times, they took all the necessary precautions with masks, social distancing and wiping down all touched surfaces. We felt very comfortable having them in our house. If you are looking for very knowledgeable and professional people for radon mitigation work, I would highly recommend Radon West.

Successful Radon Mitigation

After detailed research on Radon and options for Radon Mitigation, I chose RadonWest based on their excellent reputation and position as a leader in the industry. Renata did an exceptional job evaluating and estimating the job and Colin was outstanding with the mitigation itself. Both were very generous sharing their time and a wealth of knowledge based on many years of experience.

The mitigation was completely successful, bringing radon levels down from 200-450 to between 10-20 Bq/m3.

I give my full recommendation to RadonWest for their excellent knowledge, professionalism and the first rate results they deliver.

More about Radon West

Radon West Ltd. is one of Canada’s most engaged companies in the radon industry.
We are a C-NRPP certified, full service radon and building science company, for both commercial and residential projects.
We also mitigate radon levels in existing buildings, install new construction details, and provide radon related certification and continuing education training.
Our services also include testing, design, analysis, inspections, research and development as well as consultation.
We develop and maintain NORM management programs to meet Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

Our technical expertise in the understanding of building science and system design ensures that the final installation is the best fit for the many factors that influence radon infiltration such as construction type, climate, geology, and the operating systems of a building.
We specialize in technical diagnostics and challenging projects.

We are a recognized industry leader in the radon services industry and are known nationally for our high-quality work and for our science-based design of effective and efficient radon control systems specific to Canada’s cold climate.

Our history:
Two of our founders built their own home in 2006. They had heard about radon but were assured by almost everyone they talked to that it was not a problem in Alberta. A couple of years later they decided to test anyway and were surprised with the findings. They had radon in their home above the acceptable levels. They reduced their levels and then started to test the homes of family and friends. 42% of them had levels higher than the acceptable guidelines. One founder’s levels were so high that based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency guidelines her family should have evacuated their home within 3 months. They had been living in the home for 8 years with their young children. Hence, in 2012 Radon West Ltd. was born in 2012. Now our team of 7 operates out of a head office in Okotoks, Alberta as well as field locations in Cochrane and Calgary.

Areas of expertise:
Our understanding of the science behind radon entry and mitigation has created our reputation as a “different kind” of radon professional. Our company is science driven and with that comes curiosity and exploring different ways to do things. We are well equipped to more than just the standard radon testing and mitigation that is common in the industry.

Mitigation:
The majority of radon reduction systems in Canada are depressurization systems for which we have a defined process that ensures we are designing systems specific to the building. It begins with a site assessment to help define scope and develop budget for mitigation activities. Next, we perform detailed diagnostics to determine natural pressure, design pressure and minimum target pressure for effective radon protection. Then we develop soil resistance and pipe resistance measurements to allow for an accurate estimate of the depressurization fan characteristics required for the design. Next, we apply temperature correction factors to ensure systems will work in the coldest time of the year. Construction of the sub-slab mitigation system according to design and budget is completed and documented in a detailed as-built application relating to the project. The system is commissioned and a short-term test is performed to verify system effectiveness. Some systems require different mitigation techniques, such as HVAC changes, but each building is different and the best mitigation type can only be determined once testing and diagnostics have been completed.

Radon in air testing:
We have experience managing large-scale testing projects. In the last 2 years we have managed test distribution, quality assurance and quality control activities for more than 10,000 buildings. We follow stringent quality control/assurance protocols.

We also offer residential test kits for home owners. Our kits are different than most others because we complete the same stringent quality control and assurance testing so homeowners have the same quality when testing their home themselves.

Radon in water testing:
If there are areas where the UofC processes significant quantities of groundwater, Radon West has experience quantifying the contribution of processing groundwater on the radon level.

Radon emanation from building materials (flux) testing:
In the unlikely event that radon emanation is thought to be a significant factor; we have the ability to quantify the impact of radon emanation inhouse.

Gamma radiation testing:
Certain types of radon mitigation systems can create gamma radiation issues. We have the equipment and knowledge to measure and analyze gamma radiation.

Building Code:
Radon is our business and we recognize how and which parts of the building code are directly related to radon. We can evaluate and understand how different technologies and products can improve or impede the ultimate goal of radon reduction.

Building Envelope Testing:
Radon entry and mitigation is all about building science. We need to understand how the building is operating before we can remediate efficiently and effectively. We use blower doors, duct blasters, thermal imaging cameras and smoke machines, etc. We consider these building science skills invaluable however few people in the industry have them.

Research and Development:
As with any science-based company we know that increased information drives better technologies, processes and policy. We collaborate with other specialized scientists, like sound engineers for example, to help improve and develop new techniques for both radon testing and mitigation to make systems less intrusive, more energy efficient and effective.

Training:
We are one of only four C-NRPP approved trainers in Canada and the only one in Western Canada that provides certification and continuing education courses in the field of radon measurement and mitigation.
