Contractor Jason Caplan. The project was a 300 sq. ft. basement to be finished. Frame, insulate and drywall 2.5 walls and drywall ceiling with a slight low bulkhead. Also included was some minor electrical, a few receptacles and a light under the stairs. Quoted price was $6000, $4000 labor, $2000 materials. He said he needed 3 weeks to complete. The job was done to primed drywall in 8 days. Material costs were $600-$800 leaving a profit of $5200, or $650/day. Much higher than the typical $300-$400/day for most contractors. When asked to adjust the final price to reflect actual time and materials he refused and demanded full payment as per quote. Also demanded a $3000 deposit before any work was done. The drywall work was sloppy. Electrical boxes were not installed to code and installed after the drywall was hung. A request was made to leave one wall uncovered to allow installation of cable tv, audio and phone wires but the wall was dry walled over regardless and wires left coming out of a small hole in the wall which we had to repair. A smoke detector was also dry walled over in the ceiling and had to be repaired by us. Walls and ceiling were primed before the sanding was completed making sanding repairs difficult. The contractor Jason Caplan also left all construction waste in a pile of open bags and debris on the shared driveway. We do not recommend this contractor. There are many more contractors available that do a better job for less money.
