Patio

We had our patio done by Freehold Concrete. Through no fault of Dylan the project went sideways- the concrete supplier poured the wrong colour cement. Not just a little off colour but pinky/orange terra cotta instead of beige/grey. The way Dylan handled the situation was amazing. Very professional and efficient. His positive relationship with his suppliers allowed the mistake to be corrected seamlessly. The wrong colour cement was removed quickly and the right colour poured. We are so pleased with the end result and would use Freehold concrete again.

Thank you for taking the time to share this story Lynn. I vividly remember where I was when you called that morning to say the concrete being placed was "terra cotta", oh boy!

I appreciate you recognizing our efforts during that unique ordeal and also for taking the time to share the story. all the best Lynn, glad we made it right for you!

New Patio and Steps

We had Freehold come by for an estimate and it was clear form the beginning that they were a professional company. On time, quick turnaround for pricing after the meeting (that afternoon which was nice), and an instant schedule once we approved the estimate. Our start date was three weeks off and the job started within two days of what was quoted which is amazing for the variable weather in Calgary! Beautiful work boys, we are so glad we decided to have the team at Freehold complete our work last summer. Best of luck in 2020 guys:)

Back patio, front sidewalk

I hired freehold 4 years ago to do a stamped patio. I felt they were the most professional out of the 5 quotes I received. From start to finish, the freehold team was quick, clean, and on budget. No hidden costs, the quote was the price! Just last season I hired them to complete my front sidewalk, it was nice to see the same people working on my project as I did 4 years ago. That shows me this is a great company providing quality workmanship. Highly recommend freehold

New Patio

We contracted Freehold to remove our old paver stone patio and pour a new concrete patio. Met with Dylan to discuss our requirements. We received a detailed cost estimate that met our needs.

Dylan communicated effectively and started on the date promised.

The team did a great job, were courteous, considerate of the neighbors and just good to deal with.

The job was completed as planned at the cost quoted.

We are very happy with our new patio.

Driveway Replacement

This group of guys are your best option for new concrete in Calgary! We could not be happier with our new driveway and the service we received during the process.

Dylan is extremely knowledgable. From our first meeting I could tell that he was passionate about his profession. I asked him about the 1 Star reviews he had received in the past, and he was very humble and honest about those projects.

His understanding of what goes into a great concrete project made Dylan and his team at Freehold an obvious choice for us, and we are so glad we went with Freehold for our driveway.

Front Step Renovation

Dylan was great to work with and always willing to find a solution. Very knowledgeable and his crew did a great job on our steps. There were a few moments of miscommunication but that only resulted in us getting some free work at no extra charge! We really appreciated it. Dylan takes full responsibility with his finished product and is very customer oriented. Would recommend to anyone

A Failure In Workmanship

When we first met Dylan, we were impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. We read great reviews on HomeStars, so we hired him to remove an old driveway and to pour a new one with a patio.

Within a week the driveway developed two large cracks right about the place where the concrete begins to slope 3/4" over a 4' distance towards the house. Also, after the first winter, areas of the driveway began spalling and flaking.

We reached out to Dylan who dropped by in the spring to look at the driveway. His demeanour was disrespectful, belligerent and hostile. He was yelling at us, swearing and complaining about all the home owners who were unhappy with his workmanship.

We have since contacted Dylan over a dozen times. He first agreed to fix the slope, and we discussed options, he said he was committed to honouring his contract which clearly states that the driveway will slope away from the house. Then, he changed his mind.

It's now two years after the initial driveway pour and this is a snippet of Dylan's most recent email:

"You are correct that I am still running the crew. I have however lost my house due to corporate debt and now renting a house near my daughter [sic] school. I will be unable to complete any work at your house. ... it has been a battle that can't be won against shotty product that we can't control. I am currently transferring out of concrete into the RCMP and hope to be done with this industry by his time next year." - end comment.

Dylan has refused to accept responsibility for the work done, citing 'shotty product' is to blame rather than poor quality workmanship. So, during the last two years, I have researched the concrete industry and the chemical nature of concrete itself.

A driveway that slopes towards a house is the result of poor workmanship, this is not an issue of the product. So now, we have water draining off the driveway soaking the house foundation.
The issue of scaling is also one of workmanship. Concrete that has been 'overworked' will draw water to the surface and as the water moves up to the top - so do lighter weight materials, like sand. What you end up with is a concrete mixture that is no longer uniform and with surface integrity that is greatly compromised. As a result, when we began driving on the driveway the surface began spalling.

Dylan was on the job site the entire time, and it was his responsibly to ensure that the concrete sloped away from the house and for how the concrete was worked. With so much variety in composition, it was Dylan who specified the concrete mixture that ultimately became our driveway.

I'm sure Dylan will respond to this review to defend himself and say how sorry he is, and how it is not his fault but the fault of the 'industry' and the fault of the product but you have to ask yourself, 'Would you hire a guy who won't honour his contract?' 'Would you hire a guy who won't accept responsibility when things go wrong?' 'Would you hire a guy who is trying to get out of the industry?'

We are absolutely disgusted with the dramatic switch in Dylan's behaviour. I guess money really does change a man's demeanour. Dylan's lack of honesty, integrity and professionalism is beyond description. We won't be around to see it, but I hope what goes around will come around ten-fold, he's earned it.

Poor product

Less than 1 year after having our driveway poured it started to exhibit pitting and scaling. We contacted Dylan immediately and he came to have a look and promised he would take care of it. On no less than 4 occasions did he indicate he would take care of things as weather did not permit. Another year and the driveway has gotten significantly worse and now the response is he will not fix it. Will cites all this crap about warranty allowing for certain percentage, stronger salt mixes blah blah. I know other people drive on same roads as I do and their recently poured driveways do not exhibit same issues. All talk and won't stand behind product.

Company Response

Harold, I apologize again for not meeting your expectations on your driveway. Please touch base with Kerridge Concrete and see if they stand behind their concrete. Over the years we have spent tens of thousands to fix problems that weren't workmanship related. Our professional labour only works with the product that is delivered to us curb side by the ready mix companies in this city. Both parties, you and I, have zero recourse against these companies for inferior products. With that you have shed light on the largest issue in the concrete industry. I truly wish you well and am regretful that our business relationship didn't end differently.
