Moving several large pieces of furniture from one household to another.

I recently hired this company to move several large pieces of furniture (an oak dining table with 6 chairs, an oak dresser ith mirror, 2 oak nightstands with drawers, a reclining chair and a reclining loveseat) from the home of one elderly family member who was downsizing to that of another elderly family member who needed furniture. I no longer live in Edmonton, so I was trying to make the arrangements from a distance, and on very short notice, which was a bit intimidating. At first, I tried a company I had used years ago, but their quote was more than double what The Mover Guys quoted. I was a little bit hesitant, since I had seen some negative reviews of this company, but I decided to give them a try. My family members report that the men were professional, courteous, clean, and efficient. They arrived about one hour late, which was not unexpected, since our move was at the end of the day. However, they called before the scheduled time to say they would be late and give an estimated arrival time. The job was completed within the time estimated, and the cost was as quoted. My family members were extremely pleased, and so am I. If you read my other reviews, you will see that I do not hesitate to criticize when I am unhappy with work quality or lack of professionalism. That was not the case with The Mover Guys, and I would not hesitate to recommend them, based on this experience.

Personal move

We hired the Mover Guys to move our home contents into POD storage. We found the company to be very unprofessional and careless with our belongings. To start the day off, our appointment was for 10am, they phoned to tell us they needed to move someone else first and they were going to be late; they finally arrived at 2pm. We give them clear, concise directions on how the furniture was to be loaded, with one dresser at the front so it could be accessed easiest. We later discovered that they had placed the dresser at the back of the POD. We phoned back to notify them so they could come move it, and they told us, “No, we can’t come back, just swing it out yourself.” Take note, we are three women without the physical ability to do so. We also noticed that they didn’t take any time to wrap our delicate furniture with blankets or any coverings. When we went to pay, the mover demanded we pay “cash only”, although we were told on the phone we could pay with credit card. He quoted us at $129 hr. and when we went to pay, he tacked on a hidden “driving fee”, that we were unaware of. We also paid an additional fee of $60 for two treadmills, which bring me to our biggest issue of damage. When we unloaded some of the POD contents, we noticed damage to a bookshelf, one treadmill, and one dresser. We immediately called The Mover Guys, and were told that damage costs incurred by them would not be covered because we didn’t pay for extra insurance. They told us to call our home insurance company and file a claim with them. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that we paid an extra $60 to move these large items, only to have them damaged by these movers. What exactly does this “extra fee” cover? The worst part about this entire situation is when the rest of our items need to be moved this November from the POD; I am very concerned with the state of our remaining items. I believe all damage incurred to our belongings, by the movers, should be covered by the movers. This is a terrible display of customer service and I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Load a cube for an out of town move

My wife and I rented a cube, which was supposed to be an inexpensive and convenient way to move across long distance. The company that rented us our cube advocated that we use this company; it was the only one they recommended and they had experience loading them.

Well, they showed up late. They argued about what was allowed to go into a pod, eg: they claimed that they couldn't load a bed frame into it. Can you imagine that? Who moves a household without moving beds? They also told us that our love-seat/hide-a-bed was "low priority." The audacity of them trying to tell us how we should prioritize our own possessions is shocking.

Their manner of loading the pod suggested they knew absolutely nothing about the process. A pod has regular intervals of in-set rings in the walls, allowing you to rope off sections of the pod to make them more secure. They didn't do this once. All of our stuff is, at the end of the day, piled in a heap. Our possessions, which is to say, everything we own, looks like a dumpster inside the cube. Oh wait! Not everything we own! There was several pieces that we should have had room for, that we have to scramble to find somewhere to store, or ship or give to charity. This seems to be a common theme for these guys; they don't have the first clue about how to pack, so they leave stuff behind, and how you deal with it is your own problem.

Something else they did which I think is completely inexcusable, is they tinkered with our fixtures. Specifically, the frame for our TV stand had the screws screwed into it. For reasons I can't fathom, one of these "professional movers" unscrewed them and left them on the floor. We also will want to be able to find them when we get where we're going. Any time we've used another mover, if they felt it was necessary to do something like this, they told us what, why, and made a point of making sure those extra pieces were put in a safe place.

We wish we hadn't relied on the cube companies recommendation to hire "The Mover Guys." If we'd read the above reviews, we certainly wouldn't have.

Movers

This was by far the most pathetic display of a moving company ever. Two shady looking characters arrived at my address with a truck covered in spray painted graffiti. Before a box had been moved they demanded $200.00 up front, as time was not on my side I complied. The move began , the skinny looking chain smoker took his sweet time and spent alot of time sitting on the back of the truck smoking, killing time as I would figure out why later. I had advised him of all items to be placed on the truck however he ignored me and before I knew it the truck was full, not all my items loaded. I called HO to be told they would come back to pick the items up - this would never happen , it was untrue. Once the truck was full chain smoker demanded additional money and stated my items were under seige until I paid more money. My quote over the phone was a thing of the past.
What choice did I have they were on the verge of driving away with my items never to be heard from again.
After much arguing over the phone we left for the new address, but no we did not as they were nowhere to be found, they were sitting on the side of the road taking another break. More phone calls to HO.
Now enroute, 5 minutes from the new address they disappear again, 15 minutes later they show up with hot coffee and a fresh cigarette, obviously I was paying this dead beat to smoke for the day.
As the truck was emptied out I demanded we return to the old address to pick up the remaining items - not a chance of happening, it was all BS.
Now the truck was empty and shady chain smoker attempted to leave telling me good luck the 5 hours I had paid for was up.
No hopes of returning for remaining items.
This company misquoted prices, added hidden fees and created fees as they went along.
BEWARE if you move with this company you will regret it.
They stall for time and OVERCHARGE, unprofessional and stunk of BO.
I would think twice before ever considering this so called company.

Movers

We hired them to move us from an apartment to a house. I had investigated this company with the BBB and they had good reviews. When the truck pulled up to our place…it was unmarked, looked crappy and two young boys jumped out to move us. One of them was rude, unprofessional and lazy...and spent more time on his cell phone then he did helping his partner move our belongings. They took forever to move us so after 4 hours (minimum charge) I told them that was it. I went to pay with my credit card and was told cash only. When I had explained I was told by their office we could pay with a credit card...he got even more rude and said they weren't leaving my house without cash in their hand...that was the nice way of writing what he said. I would never recommend this company!! What you see on the website and what shows up at your door are not the same!!
