New gas furnance installation, Toronto

I am a professional engineer who will "go to the ends of the earth" to find the most reputable firm to do a complex engineering installation job. When it came to the conversion of our 2006-era electric furnace over to a new gas fired furnace I wanted to find a highly reputable company in Toronto to do the job. I spent a good 14 months compiling a list of a dozen companies, chatted with them via email and had 5 of them come out to the house to chat about the installation. All in all, almost all of them came to the same final cost, regardless of furnace manufacture, but each used different, arbitrary prices for the sub-components. However, there tended to be a great difference in the way each salesman presented himself and his interest in my specific requests. Chris was unlike any of the others -- he immediately reminded me of my fellow UofT Engineering Science classmates back in the day. He did not jump into a sale pitch, as the others often did, but rather outlined the requirements + conversion process in a very methodical and well explained manner. I was actually quite surprised by how he presented the task at hand. After I had narrowed down the contenders to 3, it was only Chris who promptly replied to my email (within a day, not a week like others) and also was willing to take into account my specific request for special furnace & filter placement. After the gas line was installed by Enbridge, Chris sent in two of his best guys, Kamil and James, to do the job, showing up promptly at 8:30am. One was the qualified installer with certificate, the other his helper. As per the other reviews, they were very professional and their final work truly impressed me (and I don't state that lightly). The company who provided the 2006 electric furnace installation did a really slick job and I couldn't imagine anyone else doing something better - yet, I have to say that the work of these two guys, over a full 1.5 days, was spectacular and better than anything I could have imagined in my mind. Suffice it to say, installing a new gas furnace is quite an undertaking yet both of them did it at quite a clip. In the end I opted for a 60k BTU Amana 2 stage with ECM motor and replacement A/C coil. When it started up, with a dead cold house, the vents blew an air storm unlike I've ever seen or heard in my life (a tornado!) but once the house was heated the motor dialed down to a very quite setting, which makes you wonder if the fan is actually running at all. They also intelligently relocated our humidifier to a better location on the new furnace and made sure it was working, as that had been a thorn in my side with the prior furnace. Choosing a reputable company for such an expensive home infrastructure project can be a difficult decision to make, and indeed it was for me, but I am quite happy to have gone with Chris + his father Sam at Convertible Heating & Air Conditioning. Disclaimer: I am not associated in any manner with this company but rather I am just a new customer of theirs.

Company Response

Wow! This is fantastic. I am so happy to read this review, I'm welling up (again). Only my children and really good home star reviews bring tears to my eyes. This is because we really love the feeling we get from doing a good job and enriching the lives of others through our service. This is in fact our 50th birthday as a family owned and operated business and you couldn't have kicked it off with a better review than this. And I LOVE your disclaimer, I think that's hilarious.

We sell by educating the customer on how the job will go, what is needed to meet all safety codes, and what product is best for the clients individual needs, not our own greedy motivations or personal kick backs. We know that an educated customer is a smarter customer and will more likely get a safer and better installation by meeting with us; even if they don't use us, they now know what to ask for and how not to be taken advantage of. Thank you for recognizing this in us, we think the world would be a much better place if businesses actually put their customers' needs ahead of their own, but actually doing that, not just saying it for good marketing purposes.

On behalf of my brother Christopher, father Sam and all of our incredible office staff and technicians at Convertible Heating & AC - Welcome to the family.

Happy New Year 2017
