We had an extremely pleasant experience in working with Markstone Landscaping. Right from the initial orientation to the end of the project, everything went as planned. We were a bit nervous being one of the first jobs of the season but our walkway turned out better than we could have imagined. We brought out 5 companies to quote the project. Some quotes were higher, others were lower, their price was 3rd out of the 5 quotes received. We are glad we didn't go with the lower quotes as they didn't have the same professionalism as Markstone. We couldn't be happier with the service and finished project and are 100% satisfied with Markstone.

I hired this company in the summer of 2015. We had interlock installed in the front and well as in the back.

Daniel, whom I would assume is the sales person, seemed friendly. He explained the different stone options as well as pricing. I would say everything went downhill the first day the guys came to dig on the property. Not only did they damage my property, but my neighbour's also. In fairness, I was credited the price of a new garage door, plus my neighbour's gate was fixed. Fine.

One day after the installation, my backyard patio began pooling with water. Daniel came back a few days later and said it wasn't an issue....and something about grading, which is irrelevant, since neither of my neighbours have this issue in their backyard. Shame on me for not insisting they fix this.

Fast forward to the following summer (2016). After every rainfall, no matter how heavy or light, my backyard patio literally becomes submerged underwater..so much so, that flooding into my basement is a major concern at this point. I made COUNTLESS attempts last summer to reach out to Mark, each time being told by his secretary I assume, I would receive a call back. I never did.

Fed up, I called Daniel who came back to the property sometime in September. My daughter showed him pictures of how flooded the back patio becomes whenever it rains, and his only solution seemed to be one that would cost me more money.

In the past two weeks, I've tried to contact Mark almost a dozen times, not to mention an email that was sent last month (WITH PICTURES), and he still has not contacted me back.

For such a "reputable" company, I am surprised that more wasn't done to try and remedy this issue earlier on. Truly disappointing.

I hire them to extend driveway and change the vehicle oil spot blocks. But Daniel suggested to re do the whole driveway including the sides of the house by using the same used blocks except the few dirty blocks (oiled blocks approx. 30 in qty.) in $7000. Daniel was good at the time of agreement. His crew was so un-trained and un professional. They used the cheaper, different designed than the existed blocks on the sides of the house not followed the existing design. Plus they cover the lesser area than the previously covered area. On the top of this when I talked to crew leader he misbehaved. Daniel did not show up at the time. After so many back and forth complaint he agreed to fix the problems. after 2 months his 2 guys came and fix the level but other problems still there, e.g. loose front door steps, broken flower-bed, water still stay on the sides of the house.
In a short words his unprofessional crew does not know their job and so disrespectful & rude and no communication in between Daniel and his crew during the task. And Daniel was not available while his crew was working. He did not response of my calls. I am open to show to people who want to see his job done.

I had my driveway and backyard completed two summers ago in July and I must say from the concept with Daniel to all the great crews coming in we are nothing but happy. Sure the works amazing but the service was out of this world . Stress free which is very important as I've had other contractors work on our house and it was a nightmare. Markstone has great communication and great workmanship. Keep up the hard work

I highly recommend Markstone. I am very satisfied with the work they did this summer in my backyard. I had them redo all the back patio as well as around my pool and they did a fantastic job. They made sure I was up to date with everything they were doing and they even recommended what they thought would look the best and they were 100% right, I love my backyard.

Very disappointed with Markstone. Daniel sold a good sales pitch but that was it.

Once the job was done all the problems happened. Had our driveway, walkway and patio done in July 2014.

1) Driveway was supposed to be widened but they short changed us by 1.5 feet and on top of that they shifted it 2 feet over the raised curb making our driveway narrower. They wouldn't do the addition but promised to reimburse us for the shortage. Still hasn't received the money. After a year a crack appeared on our driveway, it goes from the garage up to 3/4 of our driveway. We told them about it and they said its normal and that it is not covered under their warranty. I have checked our neighborhood for concreted driveways and I don't find any noticeable cracks.

2) The backyard patio was sloped towards the house as opposed to slope away for water to flow away from the house. There were pooling of water in different areas and became dangerous during the winter time as they were close to the steps. They redid the whole backyard but there are still some spots that are pooling.

My wife and I had tried calling Daniel (sales person) and their office. At first they kept saying will get back to you, but never did. They no longer answer our phone calls as well our emails. I have taken pictures, I have sent emails to them and all of this are dated for warranty purposes since all this issues aroused before 2 years and I raised those concerns within the 2 year period.

I would not recommend this business to anyone. And if Markstone says otherwise, I am willing to show photos of their work as well as the email that I have sent to them, and the text correspondence with the sales person. I will gladly share photos or even give you an address to check their shoddy work if it help you guide making that expensive decision of going with Markstone. My guess is I wouldn't be one of the people that they will recommend to check.

Our sales representative Daniel was enthusiastic, approachable and actively involved in the project.

From what I witnessed during the whole process (and confirmed from an installer), Markstone is more concerned about the quantity of work rather than the quality and craftsmanship. This was evident in the following ways:

Excavation:
- When the excavation crew arrived, the guy outlined a 2-3ft extension which was well short of the contract agreement (5.75ft). After pointing out the correct measurements he mentioned that he didn’t have the contract on hand and was estimating the outline, which is very unprofessional.
- They didn’t dig deep enough (only dug out 4-5' inches when it should have been 8-12’), most likely to save costs on screening material. This results in a base that may not support the interlock pavers for long.

Installation:
- They didn’t compact the areas of extension (to the left and right of the driveway including the walkway), which is a major concern as it may become uneven over time. I’m worried about parking the car on the extended areas since they skipped compacting those areas.
- Forgot to include a step even though it’s mentioned in the contract (was resolved after contacting Daniel)
- Porch installation could have been better as there are gaps on the surface and steps (empty space), making it seem as if the installer didn’t measure and cut the lengths properly.
- Left the water valve on the side instead of placing it back correctly (was resolved after contacting Daniel).

Existing concerns include (see last 5 images):
Corso edges aren’t sanded properly, leaving gaps in between.
Some corso bricks are washed out.
Steps on porch aren’t sanded properly on the edges, leaving big gaps and making it seem incomplete.

Pros include:
Daniel was responsive and resolved issues quickly
Project was completed according to the scheduled deadline
Installation crew were friendly and provided knowledge about interlock care
New appearance gives our property a curb appeal

Overall, we’re satisfied the job but not impressed with the quality of work as we had better expectations than what was delivered. If you’re looking to get an average job done by a trusted, reliable company then Markstone is for you. However if you’re a perfectionist and would like quality work done according to high standards, then I’d recommend looking elsewhere.
