Dining Room Table, 4 chairs, hutch

I have read all the reviews and all those waiting have got nothing on us. On January (24 or 29) 2010 Peter come out and to see our furniture. Handed down to me by my late grandma. She bought in in the late 70's. We were promised that the old finished would be removed and a new espresso finish would be applied. The chairs would be re-upholstered and fixed. This would take 6 to 8 weeks. In on July 16 I finally got tired of waiting so I sent a email to Peter. He replied that my table is not "real wood" so they are having a problem. 6+ months and only now do they tell us they are having a problem. He them admits "someone has dropped the ball". Well for the next 1.5 months I am texting, calling and what not about getting my furniture back. Finally on the 13 of September we get everything back. I had guests arriving from Africa the next morning, and I thought for sure they were going to be eating on the floor. I wanted to see it first but there was no time. I need my table back. So they delivered it, at 11pm. At this time they want me to look it over in the truck and then pay them in full before bring it in. So we did in cash to they driver. Only to find out that they had already taken the money out of our credit card. They say that they canceled it, credit card said" THEY ARE NOT TELLING THE TRUTH". Had to get a letter from TMC stating that they already had the money so that the credit card could cancel it on their end, as it was still pending almost a week later. When they unpacked the furniture the truth was revealed. A two year old with markers could do better. the finish was bubbling up everywhere. The detail on the "wood" was gone. Everything had 2 colors. The old and the new. The old finish was never removed they just slapped on a new one right over the old. The bubbling was happening because they did not even clean the old dirt and grease on it. You could not even close the table properly. I told them leave it and come back Monday to get it. Did could not come back for a month. To busy with new customers. Came back to get it in October. Just received it back today. Almost a year later. Already done much better there are still areas that the finish has bubble up, the delivery guys toke over 1 hour to insert the 2 leafs in it, as the table would not close. A peg is still missing. And it still has two colors. To get it "done right" TMC sent our stuff to a third party. Where were told that this was as good as it can get. From the unreal wood problem and the first time screw up, they can never get it back to what we want.

Never use these people, they will tell you anything to get the job. Charge you way more then it is worth and not do the work that they promise you that they will do. And if you have a problem they have no idea on how to fix it.

Living Room

I had come across an article about restoring your furniture and how it’s the new trend in interior design and also beneficial for the environment. Shortly after I saw TMC at the Health show and they where promoting the same benefits, needless to say I went ahead and invited them into my home. They reupholstered my living room furniture and gave it new life. The transformation was amazing! I’ m very pleased with the work done by TMC and I must say they carefully calculate every part of their interaction with me. The girl that booked my in-home estimate was very pleasant over the phone and knew what questions to ask about my furniture.  The estimator was very knowledgeable on the restoration process and made some helpful suggestions.

Vanity Refinishing

I was given a handmade vanity made by my Grandfather that is dear to my heart. I came across TMC at a home show and trusted them to refinish it for me. When they delivered it to me the first time they had not done a good job on the re-glue, and the finish was runny. They told me to wait 10 days and if I still felt the same way to call them back and they would take care of it. Well I almost cried myself to sleep for the next 7 days in disbelief that my vanity that was passed down to me was ruined. I expressed my disappointment with TMC and they came to pick it up and made the repairs like they said they would. They delivered my vanity last week and I couldn’t be happier with the results. They lived up to their promised and even though it took them a second time around to get it right they did a fabulous job!

Re-Upholstering couch, three chairs

On of about Aug 19th, Morris came to our house to give us an estimate on re-upholstering our couch, and three chairs. When the appointment was made I told them that I had recently made slip covers for the furniture and asked if this material could be used. I was told that it could.(If I had been given any indication that there would have been a problem with this material I never would have let them take my furniture out of my house). When Morris arrived the slip covers were on the furniture and he took them off and sat on the furniture to test it out for any broken springs etc. I asked him at that time if they would be able to use the material to do the re-upholstering and was assured that they could. I gave him any left over material that I had from doing the slip covers and was assured there was enough material. We were apparently given all kinds of discounts for signing at that time as long as we signed that evening. This should have been our first alarm. Morris had people come and pick-up our furniture within and hour of us agreeing to the deal. (This should have been the second alarm) A month after our furniture had been taken, we received a phone call saying that if they were going to use the material it was going to cost a significant amount over and above the original $7000.00 agreement. After SEVERAL phone conversations and arguments we agreed to choose material from them. Our furniture was dismantaled by this time so we did not have the option of taking the furniture elsewhere. After much negotiations Morris came to our house with their samples and we chose material for our furniture. We were assured that the order would be put in the next morning first thing. Four days later we receive a phone call to tell us that the material for two of the chairs had to be ordered and that the material that was received from the manufacturer for the couch had a flaw in the material and could not be used so it would also have to be ordered. We were told that it would be at the manufacturers within two weeks. That was 4 weeks ago.I was assured that once received by TMC it would be put on high priority. The one chair and footstool has been delivered how ever has not been done as agreed to. We phoned Morris last Thursday and was told that he didn't know anything and that we had to contact customer service. After at least three phone calls an messages being left with no return phone call we finally talked to a live person today and were told that the material is still on back order from the manufacturer and they do not know when it will come. We are now into 4 months of our furniture being with this company. This has been a nightmare and I would strongly suggest that people DO NOT use this company. If I had gone onto this website or the BBB earlier they never would have gotten my furniture to re-upholster. I feel that we are being HIGHLY over charged and have been mislead from the very start.
Further to this information presented, I found the company quite troubling, as in not returning phone calls, not providing a phone number for a manager so I could discuss the problems, or a manager getting back to us. Except for the one person in customer service. who was very helpful (Lolita), there was no customer service. When we received our furniture, the quality was good, but the first chair returned, was not finished according to the contract. I made 2 big mistakes with this company. I signed an over priced contract, with out getting other estimates, and letting the company pickup the furniture before all the material, problems sorted out first. I highly recommend that you do not deal with this company with out your eyes wide open and don't believe everything they tell you. GET other estimates. BUY LOCAL. 4 month turn around time is way too long. This is my last comment to this situation. Never again, TMC

Company Response

Gay,
I found the information contained in your review quite troubling. After researching this issue and interviewing those involved I found some discrepancies and crucial facts missing that I feel necessary to share. Your review is titled Extremely Dishonest, which I find EXTREMELY UNFAIR. At no point was anyone affiliated with TMC dishonest. Please, allow me to explain. Yes, Morris indicated the material you had previously cut and sewn to be used as a slipcover to be suitable for the upholstery of your furniture, but, he was mistaken. It was an honest mistake – very seldom do we see people who desire to use slipcovers for reupholstery. Morris is very well versed in upholstery but he is not an upholsterer. Once the upholsterer inspected your slipcover material he declared it unusable. As explained to me, upholstery involves fastening the material to the frame which requires extra material. A slip cover is designed to fit like a glove with no excess material. This problem was relayed to you, as indicated, and an appointment for Morris to return to your home in Kitchener was set to select another fabric or combination thereof. Morris came on a Sunday, and three fabrics were selected to upholster your sofa, three large chairs and ottoman. When Morris presented you with the original price it did not include the cost for material as we intended to use the slipcovers. Naturally, this affects the price. The fabric you selected retails for $1200 but was offered for $300, which you accepted. Unfortunately, a second unforeseen problem arose – backordered fabric. Normally we do not do fabric selections on a Sunday because we prefer to check stock before proceeding and this can not be done on a Sunday. Of course, with this run of poor luck, upon ordering the fabric we learned two of the three selections were on backorder. One was only a week or two, the other, however, was several weeks. You and Mr. Nadeau refused to wait several more weeks which is understandable, so, we couriered about 5 swatches of fabric that closely resembled the severely backordered selection. To your credit, you phoned the very next day with a selection. From there we produced the two items that were unaffected by fabric and delivered those to you October 19, 2010. Your HomeStars comment was posted on the 27th of October despite 70% of your order still outstanding. (How can one properly asses a company before receiving the very work they were hired to produce?) From there, TMC would upholster the remaining items as the fabric became available. As of November 19, you have received all of your items back and we trust you are satisfied. TMC prides itself on its quality and at no point in your comments did you make mention of quality. Yes, two unfortunate events occurred which prevented the order from being completed earlier but at no point was quality sacrificed and TMC worked with you throughout the entire process.

Furniture Restoration

This past summer while strolling through Square One with my wife she noticed a kiosk that seemed to be selling miniature furniture. She approached the kiosk and learned they were really offering furniture restoration. My wife has an old love seat she always wanted to something with and thought, “what the heck, I’ll leave my name.”

Shortly after, a man, Joe, came out to our home, he was very polite and professional, and discussed the various options for restoring the love seat. We liked what we heard and saw and decided to enter an agreement.

The next day I decided to look up TMC, something I try to do as frequently as I can before engaging in any agreement. What I found was quite disturbing. Immediately, I called TMC and cancelled the order. The next day Jesse phoned and explained what I found misrepresents TMC. Of course, I didn’t believe him as a representative of the company. He explained the company has recently overhauled its system of production becoming more efficient in the process, and hired more customer service people. He went on to explain that they do 2500 jobs a year and a few people inevitably complain about a process that is very subjective. He admitted they do call with additional work on occasion but this work is always optional and similar to when you bring your car in for an oil change and they find your brake pads have only a few kilometres remaining. Jesse assured me the quality was exceptional, the service improved, the turn-around shortened and the additional cost unlikely to occur and if it does, it is optional. This made a lot of sense to my wife and I, Jesse was patient and thorough with us so we decided to proceed.

I told Jesse that if TMC angers us we will post a scathing review on HomeStars. He countered by asking that if we’re happy to post a review indicting so. So here we are. The love seat is gorgeous. My wife could not be happier, Joanne and her team were terrific and the turnaround reasonable. Highly recommended.

Refinishing of my dining table top & chairs

Thank you for a job beautifully done. The top of my dining table is perfect. Not only did you glue the spindles on the chairs as I requested, you “freshened up” the backs as well. Yesterday I bought new seat cushions to complement the rejuvenated chairs!

Refinish tripple dresser and high boy

They have had our furniture since June, 2010, early Sept attempted to deliver it, not done correctly, sent it back to the factory, now three weeks later they want us to take it even thought it wasn't done right with a promise that if we're not happy in 60 - 90 days they will make a plan "B". They want full payment when they deliver it, hum. This company is very money hungry, approch with caution.

Refinishing a Desk

The guy that they sent to our house to give us a quote overvalued the desk, and said that it was worth anywhere between $25,000 and $70,000. He spoke to us as though we didn't know anything about the value of our furnishings, and insulted us about the things that weren't antiques. We felt pressured to sign a contract on the spot, so that we could use a coupon we had been given. We should have trusted our gut!

We have tried to call several times over the last 6 months to ask about the progress of the piece...none of our phone calls were ever returned. We had to drop in to the shop unannounced, and then they didn't want to show the piece to us. At that time they tried to upsell us to pay more to fix the sticking drawers. We thought that came with the almost $3,000 price tag. Is that not part of the Restoration cost? Are you telling me that we're paying $3,000 to refinish the desk? Apparently so.

Months pass by and we still have yet to hear anything, so we call...no return phone call. We have to drop in to the shop again. The desk has the top removed and and is covered with dust and tape, where it hasn't passed quality control. It obviously hasn't been touched in months, and the drawer inserts are missing, and the refinisher has no idea where they are. We are told that it will be ready in a couple of weeks.

A month goes by and still nothing. It was supposed to have been delivered last week. We get a phone call saying that it is "Refinished to the best of their abilities." We get there to pick it up and it has a piece of plywood over the top of it...it's a leather topped desk, and is covered with cans of stain, and has water marks all down the side of it because it's sitting beside a door to the outside that is always left open. To boot the top is screwed on sideways and the drawer inserts are still missing!

We voice our strong feeling about their workmanship, if you can call it that, and ask for a discount, as the desk is still not ready, to which we get a snotty response from the now 5th person we've had to deal with...apparently they have a high staff turnover rate. GREAT!

I would NEVER recommend them. They have terrible customer service, shoddy workmanship, and I just plain don't trust them!
