new house built in 2018

I got this house built by coventry homes in laurel crossing neighborhood in edmonton.
There are multiple problems with build. I notified coventry about all of them. there are still few problems left untouched.
main one is outside post not straight!
kitchen counter shaking which I have to get fixed from my basement developer. coventry did tried to fix but it but in end told it will stop shaking once basement drywall wall is done!
I tried everything to escalate it to higher management but no one seems taking responsibility for it.
my coventry job #06179 if anyone cares at this company

Issues with shingles, driveway and concrete steps, tiles.

I made a bad decision to buy from Coventry Homes. Nice people to sell you homes but when it is time to correct overlooked mistakes and terrible workmanship they give you alot of headaches. I don't know what their foremen are onsite for. They hire tradespeople that may not be supervised by Journeymen. I went against the advise of relatives who work at Coventry and now regret it. I may end up in small claims court over these issues.
Don't buy Coventry or get things fixed before you pay deposit.

Choose a different builder

Zero follow through on any issues after they have your money. Do yourself a favour and find a different home builder who will stand behind their work.

I’ve had issues with my floor, paint, bathtub, landscaping and cement work.

Very pleasant home buying experience

Amazing people to work with. Especially Christian who is very knowledgeable not only in regards to the floorplans of all the homes but also the construction process. A few changes with extra costs that had to be made along the way due to the customization we made to the home. But I always get prompt responses whenever I reach out. It's been a great experience so far!

Not following Alberta Building Codes

We built a house through Coventry Homes which was finished in January of 2016. While pouring the concrete for the driveway and walkway several problems were noted. The company who poured the concrete didn't properly barricade the parameter which resulted in a trades worker walking through the concrete and pulling a toolbox through it. This issue was brought up to Coventry who only corrected one portion of the problem (the foot print still remains). This item was again brought up during our 3 month inspection and again during the 1 year inspection. We were repeatedly told that this was a warranty item but a supervisor would have to come to view the damage. Before our 1 year walk-through we noticed that rebar was starting to come through the concrete and again reported this problem to Coventry during our final 1 year walk-through. We were again told that a supervisor would have to come and view this. It has now been over 2 years since we have moved in and we are still trying to have both items addressed. During the last supervisor visit we were informed that they would only repair the foot print and that we were being unreasonable expecting them to repair the location where the rebar was showing through. We provided documentation to Coventry showing the requirements for rebar placement in concrete from the both the Alberta Building Code and Canadian Standard Association which requires the rebar to be 60mm below the concrete surface. Upon providing this information to Coventry we were informed that they are refusing to follow the required standards and will now no longer be repairing the panel with the foot print either. This issue began in October of 2015 and still has not been corrected. It is extremely apparent after discussions with numerous Coventry personnel that they are unaware of the legal codes required for building a house and their blatant refusal to have our driveway repaired to ensure it complies with provincial and federal standards is disgusting. They are clearly not following the guidelines of the Canadian Home Builders Association, of which they claim to be a member.

Terrible customer service from Coventry Homes

We were initially very excited to be building with Coventry Homes. We were drawn in by their beautiful and unique home designs. We were also impressed by the charismatic sales rep at our local Coventry Homes Sale center. The fact that they were the preferred builders for the Edmonton Oilers also drew us in.

However, after we signed up to build with Coventry, to our dismay, we discovered the following issues even before excavation started:

1. Coventry makes errors and expects us to pay for them.
For four months, the sales rep showed us plans that didn’t match up with the price that we had signed on our addendum (apparently, their drafting department missed 20 square feet). On discovering his mistake, he inserted the extra fee of $2600 into the upgrades agreement and tried to get us to sign it without discussing the fee. When we asked him why he had not discussed it with us, he was dishonest, saying that he had in fact discussed this.

2. Poor knowledge of the features of the home, dismissive of our questions, and making up facts.
When we asked about the radon detection system, our sales rep dismissed radon as a legitimate health concern, saying that it was more likely for a person to get brain cancer from cell phone usage (radon is in fact the #1 risk factor for lung cancer in non-smokers). He stated that radon detection systems were basically a way for the government to make more money. He also believed that there was a siren on the radon detection system that would go off like a fire alarm, if radon surpassed a certain level.

3. Not giving us a proper timeline and not keeping us updated unless we contact him. Which was followed by an abrupt answer to our inquiry.
Coventry’s original timeline was to break ground in January or February, the excavation time is now delayed to end of May. We would have appreciated updates about this delay instead of total silence from our sales rep.

4. 72 hours notice to come up with over $36000.
We had paid over $36000 for the initial deposit for the house back in October of 2017. In May of 2018, we were informed by our sales rep that our next deposit of $36000 was due, and he was only giving us 72 hours to submit the payment. This was ridiculous as 72 hours is not enough time for two full-time professionals to arrange an appointment with our lawyer, meet with the lawyer, and to get our paperwork and cheques ready for payment. Most builders give the client four to six weeks notice before the deposit is due.

In all fairness, we do appreciate the efforts of Coventry Homes’ assistant manager stepping in to personally oversee our building process, due to the incompetence of our sales rep. We understand that the assistant manager is incredibly busy and yet is willing to sacrifice his time to help us out in this way. We have also heard some very positive feedback from our friends and colleagues who have Coventry built homes. They seem to be happy with the build quality, despite also experiencing an unnecessarily difficult and stressful process due to poor customer service. Hopefully, the building process does not get any worse for us, as we may opt to cancel our build if we don't think building with Coventry is worth the hassle. At this time, we cannot recommend Coventry Homes to anyone for building their new house. We sincerely hope that our sales rep and Coventry Homes will redeem themselves, firstly, through better communication and, secondly, through a quality-built home. If this is the case, we look forward to posting a very positive review of Coventry Homes.

Walk-out basement home

We built a walk out home in 2011. Upon possession, we noticed a very fine crack on the trim above the basement sliding door. I mentioned this and they replied it was cosmetic. Shortly after our one year inspection, I called the warranty department regarding our countertops (edging was coming apart in every counter in the house), as well I wanted to inquire about the crack that was getting larger. I was dismissed because our 1 year warranty was over. My house is now just under 6yrs old, during a torrential rain (which is rare here) we notice a slow dripping leak coming from the trim crack. I called, emailed and FB messaged Coventry. We had three different contractors come out, who all suggested reaching out to Coventry despite our contract being over, as this was obviously a builders error. After about three weeks, Coventry finally returned my call. They sent the warranty inspector to co0me out and denied that anything was wrong. They called a few days later to say they wouldn't be helping us because they have nothing written in our file that we reported this, that warranty was over and that the two people I did speak with are no longer with Coventry. It seemed like they were repremanding me for being a poor homeowner, when they couldn't even see any issues with their workmanship nor give us their opinion as to where the water was coming in from.

Gratefully I have found certified, knowledgeable and meticulous relief/disaster specialists who are helping us locate, assess and repair the issue. They have discovered many careless errors that Coventry had made which compromised the integrity of our home, and have documented every single one of them. If you are planning on purchasing a home, I would do my research first before deciding on doing business with Coventry. My experience while purchasing was pleasant but not so much after moving in. Looking back at reviews I see that I am not the only one who experienced issues with leaks in a Coventry home. Bottom line, a home of less than 6yrs should not experience structural issues, leaking and black mold. A company with any type of morale would want to at least see any improper work they have done hiding behind the walls despite warranties being expired and perhaps take some type of ownership of selling a consumer a poor product.

Company Response

We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with your home. Providing an exceptional customer experience is our number one priority, and we take great pride in working diligently with our clients when issues are brought to our attention. Unfortunately, though your home is now 6 years old, the concerns regarding your basement have just recently been brought to our attention and we are working to assess the situation. To this end, a courtesy call has been booked with our Warranty Manager to view your home in person.

Unfortunately in cases where there is a large span of time between the expiration of the warranty period and the notification of any issues, the decision on if or how we would be able to assist are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Once our Warranty Manager has had a chance to take a look at the home he will be sitting down with our General Manager to review.

Please note that if our homeowners experience any issues with their home our Warranty Department and our After Hours Emergency Line numbers are posted on the "Contact Us" page of our website. During regular office hours the phone number is 780-453-5100 and our after-hours line (emergency only; does not accept text messages) is 780-446-5543. All homeowners are encouraged to contact us as soon as possible if a potential issue is suspected.

Regards,
Coventry Homes

Amazing Experience

Right from start our sales guy Samir was amazing to deal with, was straight up about what was or wasn't included. Many of the standard features are upgrades with other builders ( we had neighbors build at same time and paid extra for what was standard with Coventry). They are a higher priced builder but they are worth every cent. We had a couple hiccups along the way but nothing was tragic and unfixable. I recommend them to anyone looking to build as it was an amazing experience..
