AC Repair

My AC broke down in August. I called LB who had done my servicing of HVAC and AC earlier in the year. The first visit was great in April was great - technician was personable and from what I could assess thorough. The second service visit was the polar opposite. While the customer service operative who took my call was efficient and helpful, the technician who arrived to assess / fix my AC was the opposite. Out of fairness, perhaps his technical ability was compromised by a phone call that I overheard. I don't know if it was a supervisor/owner or external but whoever was on the phone was screaming expletives at him and he was screaming them back. After witnessing this, I had serious doubts about the technician and the company. Turns out that while 2 other technicians had worked on the same AC unit outside previously (one LB and one another company), this tech complained that he could not access the wires/panel given its placement to my porch. Having lost all confidence, I paid the service fee, asking him to close it up.
I decided to call the company to let them know what I heard through the phone call after a couple of days. If it was a supervisor/owner who spoke to the tech that way, I was mortified as no employer should speak to an employee that way. If it wasn't, then there was another issue. The customer service person took notes and said she would escalate which is great. What I would have expected is that someone from the company to call me back to say either 'that call was not from LB Heating' or 'we have addressed the issue'. Either way, when a customer calls with a concern it needs to be addressed and responded to.

FYI - I didn't ask for my service call money back at any time.

This company was recommended by friends who still use them and are happy with their service, but I have moved on.

Company Response

Although we appreciate the concern by the customer, the matter in question was an internal issue that was dealt by a manager shortly afterwards. At no time did it involve the customer nor did it require her attention. We do regret that the matter occurred in front of the customer but it has since been resolved and is now considered closed.

Boiler Repair

Excellent service, no complaints. Called L B to fix a boiler problem, the tech that came to my house was very sharp and fixed the problem in no time. He also gave some some great advice on how to maintain my heating system.

Provided, Installed, Ongoing service of HVAC system and tankless hot-water heater

Approximately four years ago I contracted with LB Heating & A/C to install a furnace, central air conditioning system, and tankless hot water heater. From start to finish they performed with a high degree of professionalism. Ted spent as much time as it took for me to review, understand and choose among the various options he described to me. He also came up with an ingenious "fix" to the problem I faced of installing a/c in an older home without sufficient duct-work, including a return air vent/duct on my second floor. Both he and his workers were reliable: they came when they said they would and they did the work promised. The project was completed on budget - there were no additional costs or "surprises." Since the installation, I have used them for routine maintenance and service and, again, have been nothing but pleased with their work, including their willingness to explain what needs to be done and how they will be doing it. In terms of pricing: while near the higher end of the quotes I received for the job, LB was not the highest. I believe that their quote/fee was commensurate with the excellent service and professional and knowledgeable workmanship that I received. An added bonus: LB Heating has always been swift to return calls and to either book appointments or come quickly if the need is urgent. I would recommend them without hesitation.

Condensate Drain/Furnace Check Up

I have trusted the service of my HVAC systems for 2 of my properties to LB Heating & Air Conditioning for 4 years now. Their service technicians do a thorough inspection of your furnace and a/c system. Recently had another company come in to do an inspection/cleaning/check up, which they failed and then called LB. They solved the problem instantly and ensured that the complete system was working flawlessly.

Furnace replacement

Ted convinced me to install a German Viessman high-efficiency boiler to replace our old fuel hog. The replacement was done quickly and conscienciously. The new furnace (size of four shoeboxes, attached to the wall) freed up up floorspace and was well worth the investment.

Air Conditioner Installation & Repair

I hired LB to install an air conditioner in 2010. I got 4 other quotes and LB was on the high end at $1800. Ted Lausic was very personable and convincing when discussing the service provided by LB. He mentioned that though they were more expensive, they would provide great customer service. In fact, Ted told me they would service the unit at no cost the first year.

I never heard from him again, though I should have followed up with the company regarding the service and I don’t blame him for that.

This year my air conditioner failed to produce cold air. I called LB to come and have a look. They sent a technician over at $79 to just show up and $50 for each half an hour spent at the house. The technician charged $190 and told my wife it would cost $900 to repair the unit. There was a leak somewhere on the line and the refrigerant had all leaked out. They would have to come back with a second technician to find exactly where the leak was and to repair it.

I was shocked that only 3 years after installation, the repair would cost around 2/3 of the original cost of the unit. Keep in mind that when living in Toronto, you only need AC for between 2 and 3 months a year, or 7 - 9 months of actual use with many mild days during this time where AC isn't needed. I called LB to figure out what was wrong and was not able to reach either Ted, or the technician who quoted for the repair. The receptionist told me the problem as stated by their technician so I was able to do some research.

I decided to call other HVAC companies to determine if the cost LB quoted was reasonable. The first person I spoke to was shocked that the unit wasn't under warranty and suggested I call LB to find out what was wrong. He said in his experience it would cost between $350 and $500 to repair. He also said that a leaking line suggested a poor installation. Nothing was wrong with the actual unit so once again, this indicates a poor installation. A call to another Bryant dealer in Toronto revealed that the cost to repair would be approximately $300 to $600.

After calling LB back, the receptionist told me she would have the technician call me back as she wasn't aware of the technical side of things. I have yet to hear back and it has been 6 days since my last call.

I hired another company to repair the problem. He came and not only diagnosed the problem but repaired it in under an hour for $400, this included an $89 service charge and Approx. $250 for the refrigerant. He also said the installation was what caused the leakage. So much for the efficiency and honesty of the LB tech who charged my wife $200 to hang around for an hour.

If you are looking for a company that will charge you a high price for your AC, install it poorly, fail to back up their statements with action, fail to stand by their work, give you the runaround when you try to get in touch with them, charge you an exorbitant fee when you ask them to repair their own shabby work and not call you back, then by all means, I highly recommend you hire LB.

Company Response

Unfortunately, when this client called for service, the AC unit was over 3 years old and was out of any labour warranty (1 year) and refrigerant is not covered by any manufacturer's warranty. To compound the issue, the homeowner had never had the AC unit serviced by anyone in those 3+ years.
As for the repair price, we can't justify other companies pricing but in this case we had including scaffolding in our repair price since the AC unit was mounted on the wall about 12' off the ground. With all the work fall accidents that have occurred in our industry over the years, we take our employees health and safety very seriously. Unfortunately, others do not.

Water boiler cleaning and testing

I've used LB twice now to clean the water boiler for my furnace, as well as test for CO. I did a lot of calling around the first time I needed the work down, and LB was the only company who took the time to describe to me what I actually needed. Their pricing is also quite reasonable, and are very flexible with scheduling. I would not hesitate to use LB again.

furnace ductwork and gas water heater

We are very pleased with the service from LB Heating and Air Conditioning that we received on two different jobs.
The first job was to reconfigure our ductwork and reposition our furnace and correctly vent it to the outside. Whoever had done it before we owned the house had placed the ductwork in the strangest way and in unsightly places, the furnace was not vented properly as it turns out and there was not enough cold air return either so the furnace was starved for air. Ted came and went through the house and explained everything really well, he agreed that not only was the ductwork unsightly but that it was uneconomical and basically not set up properly.
They came and made everything proper and now we dont bump our heads on the ductwork in the basement and the ducts on the main floor are much neater. They also turned our furnace to a different position which really opens up space in our basement. They fixed the exhaust and intake pipes outside so they were correct as the previous installers had them too close to each other so the intake was taking in the exhaust air. It makes such a big difference having knowledgeable people doing these things.
It was a difficult job and instead of taking the easy way out like the previous people they went the extra distance and figured out how to make it attractive and correct. It makes a huge difference!
The second job was that we wanted our ancient electric water heater replaced with one of those new on demand tankless gas water heaters. We are really pleased with it, once again they came and installed it neatly and correctly even though with an older house like ours there are difficulties sometimes. We are very relieved not to have a giant tank of water in our basement anymore, instead just the box on the wall.
I would definitely use LB again and highly recommend them.

Vitodens Combi Boiler with tankless HW

We thought we had already made a decision until we called these guys last minute. Ted showed up within hours of our request and presented a great proposal at a fair price (it cost a little more to make sure everything is done to code and using all copper instead of pex or black piping). The installation was finished to perfection and the unit is working flawlessly.

While researching the various systems, it became apparent that you need an experienced technician to install these new high tech mod-con boilers. Otherwise you may be in for a slew of problems that may have more to do with the quality of installation rather than the equipment itself. We called the manufactuer and they recommended LB. Then we checked LB's website and saw various pictures of other Vitodens installations. Ted said that Ivan, his installer, is one of the top three boiler fitters in the city and after seeing his work we think he is definitely one of the best. To think, we almost went with another contractor.

The Vitodens provides a constant glow of warmth from the rads, there is no more knocing from trapped air and our programmable thermostat used to have settings as low as 17.5 degrees so that we could save on energy but now we keep it at a constant 21. We have a continuous supply of "non-stinky" hot water so we no longer have to wait for the old, sludge filled hot water tank to reheat after a long bath or shower. We ran two showers at the same time with no issues (we're a family of four).

What's more, our heating bills are half the usual amount (some credit is given to the milder winter) and we're glad we're no longer paying to rent an inefficient HW tank. We're turning that old space into a storage area.
