Installed a new steel shingle roof
First of all let me say that PAPCO Building Supplies is a middleman. They do no manufacture the steel roof and they have no employees who install the roof. They sub contract to local roofing companies to do the install. All they are is a few salesmen and a phone and an office.
The salesman will make lots of promises about how the install will be done. However, the installer will just do the work whatever way he chooses. I was promised that the highly trained installers would tear back the old shingles 1 foot to look for rot, repair it if necessary and then install the steel produce. It didn’t happen!! A renovation contractor from [another company] got the sub contract to install my roof. Two children showed up at my home, without even a ladder, to start this work. I had to lend them my ladder just so they could get up on the roof.
They didn’t remove the old shingles as advertised in the sales pitch, all they did was break them back about a ½ “ to be flush with the fascia. There was no attempt to clean up and dispose of the scraps either, they just thru it down into the bushes.
When they did find the one spot of rot I have on my roof they made a comment about the piece of steel I had jammed up under the shingles to stop the leak. They removed my patch and just put the new shingles right over the hole. No repair was even attempted. The experienced install team that I heard about during the sales pitch had to be shown how to use a calking gun when the time came to do that. There is some special type of calking that should be used on these dark shingles. I think it’s a clear material so it doesn’t show. The kid that did mine just picked up a tube of white silicone at Canadian Tire, put it in the calking gun and cut the end off. He couldn’t figure out why nothing came out when he squeezes the trigger. No one had ever shown him that there is a seal that must be broken in the tube after you cut off the applicator end. "Highly trained" is just another exaggeration I was given during the sales pitch.
I have been after them for 2 years to install a few snow breaks so the snow doesn’t slid off and block my doors of worse yet kill someone. I get a positive response to phone calls but nothing ever happens. It’s too late for this year and I think I’ll just go out in the spring and purchase some from a local and install them myself. These guys do business by phone and word of mouth, not email or FaX so there is never any record of what they said they would do.
In conclusion, this is a good steel roof product but Papco is not a company I would do business with again.
