Windows in new home

I purchased a new build home in a development who hyped up their "Energy Star" homes, citing the many upgrades including the Pollard low-e windows. Unfortunately, I have had nothing but problems with these windows. I did report all the problems on the various Tarion warranty forms but the builder did nothing to resolve the problems other than installing additional caulking in the basement windows where they are explosed. Problems are as follows:
1. The sliding windows in particular have extreme problems with ice dams...this is not a little ice from condensation - this is a solide piece of ice at least an ice thick that prevents me from opening the window (not good when you have a gas leak which I did about a month ago!).
2. In addition, one sliding window has mould build up BETWEEN the panes. I have never seen this before but it is really disgusting, and I'm thinking very unhealthy since the sealed window panes are apparently not so sealed (mould is due to moisture so obviously moistures has penetrated the seal).
3. A basement window was installed with a 2" x 1" hole in the plastic moulding around the window. This window is completely covered in ice..my the end of winter last year, the complete length of the window had a sheet of ice one to three inches think. Again, this window is not able to be opened which was an issue with the gas leak when Enbridge wanted to open all the windows. (!) This window, as I'm sure you can imagine, is complete covered in mould.

Oh, the developers solution to the hole in the basement window was to plug up the hole with caulking...apparently it didn't work.

Pollard says to go to my builder, the builder says it's Pollard's problems, and in the end, I'm the only one with the problem. It seems like it's a game.

I have called Pollard again to see if I can get a rep out here. Wish me luck! (No response yet, not looking good).

My advice to others is to really discuss, and get in writing, what are the procedures if you do have an issue with your windows. I think we all get those pieces of papers that save "WARRANTY" and we assume we are covered if something should go wrong.

I have tried to make this objective.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Come and take a look at my windows very very soon..the ice is getting worse, the mould is getting worse. And then fix these problems. Wishful thinking!
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?

Understand that excessive surface condensation on your windows is the first visible sign that the level of humidity in your home is too high. High levels of moisture in the air from a variety of sources, combined with reduced building air exchange, through improved building codes and manufacturing standards, tranlates into higher levels of humidity and potentially more condensation on windows and patio doors. This excessive moisture will freeze in negative temperatures, if not removed.

Pollard Windows manufactures windows and doors that meet or exceed all current manufacturing standards established by the testing standard CAN A440-M90. This testing standard establishes benchmarks for performance related to the penetration of air, water, wind and forced entry. Pollard Windows also manufactures to the Energy Star standard.

If you call in and identify yourself we would be pleased to make arrangements for a service tehnician to investigate the windows in question. If we discover a manufacturing defect, we will honor our warranty.

Replacement windows & doors

The order was placed on Sept 5. Sales guy promised it would be done in 6-8 weeks. 9 weeks later they still can't provide me with an installation schedule. Called them for updates in last couple weeks and they kept saying that they were having production issue with my order and still waiting for some materials. Asked them if the installations would be done this year and they wouldn't even gave me a straight answer. All they said it's in the plan. This is just not acceptable.

We could not schedule this installation and therefore provide a definitive installation date until a special door slab and accoustical glass had been received from our suppliers. We did provide our best estimate.

Door and Window installation

Pollard Windows and Doors supplied the items mentioned. The door sill was ordered as handicapped and was supplied as requested. After installation it was found to leak into the structure during a rain storm. Upon further review it was apparent that the sill was installed backwords. It has been in excess of 5 weeks (Sept 28) since this was reported to Pollard for review and I am presently on ignore. All I have requested is for a representative to come to the area and inspect the problem. I have been told that It is impossible to have been done wrong and that should I proceed to alter the existing the warranty will be void. What warranty and or service.

UPDATE:
Shortly after writing the initial review Pollard representatives called me and made an appointment to review the problem. The reps did discover that the sill in question was installed improperly as was originally stated. they were helpful to offer to replace what ever parts were necessary to correct the problem and or send their service people to adjust the sill to level. In this application that would not have solved the entire problem. After looking into several alternatives a difference style sill was far more practical. Upon receipt of the new sill and after installation by us as the contractor, several days later the customer had a severe rain storm and had no water penetration as previous. Have advised pollard that the problem has been resolved.

Company Response

Upon sending a representative to investigate we have discovered that we did manufacture this door system with our standard door frame that works with our standard door sill, rather than the frame designed to work with a low profile sill. We are working with this customer to arrive at a solution that works best in this application.

window replacment

pollard doesn't stand behind their work. we had windows installed throughout our home and when we found a problem with the installation of one of our windows we were shocked to find out that Pollard stuck us with the bill to rectify the problem. there response was that they installed the window to "their" liking and that our concerns did not matter. thanks for listening to your customer pollard!!! a really nice way to say that we mean nothing to your business. they just took their money and ran, customers don't mean much judging by our experience.

Company Response

This particular installation was a retrofit, which is the insertion of new windows into existing wood frames, versus a full frame removal, or the removal of the entire window frame back to the original studs. With this method of installation the new windows are installed as square and plumb as possible with the use of cedar shims between the old pre-existing wood frame and the new vinyl window frame. The existing frames were both out of square and plumb. The job was successfully completed to the homeowner’s satisfaction in July of 2008, according to the homeowner’s inspection and sign off on our completion certificate.

Seven months later we received a call about one of the bathroom windows that had been changed. Apparently the bathroom was being renovated and new wall tiling was being installed which was not lining up well with the existing wood window frame. This was a pre-existing condition that did not change with the insertion of the new window frame into the original wood frame. The only solution in this case was to remove the insert and the original wood frame and then reinstall a new complete window between the studs. This was done at less than cost.

Company Response

We did make an error at the quoting stage and we did take responsibility. The end result was that the bathroom window was manufactured with clear glass instead of obscure glass. Once we realized our mistake we ordered the obscure glass immediately, however this special glass is not kept in inventory and as such is subject to a lead time. We ordered the glass in on a rush basis. The cracked window referred to in the review was replaced.

Retrow fit windows

Our sales person, Stan Anderson, was great. Stan did what he said he was going to do. We were provided with a call advising us of a tentative start date. A week before the tentative date we were advised this would be an actual start date and on the start date the installers called to advise they were on their way. The work was completed within the time frame Pollard provided.
Our only concern was that the installers did not clean up after themselves as well as they should have.
Over all we have been very happy with our Pollard experience

New windows and doors for home and business

When the time came to replace windows and doors on our recently purchased 40 year old home I remembered an old friend who mentiomed he was in the business. Within days Mark was at our home to discuss our needs and prepare a quote. We found him polite, courteous and professional. After receiving three other quotes we decided on Pollard . One other company was slightly less expensive but we felt their product line was not near as extensive or aesthetically pleasing. We ordered the windows and as promised they showed up exactly 8 weeks later and to our amazement were installed in one day . We had a new baby in the house and it was very cold outside.
I would strongly reccomend this outfit to anyone. I have since used them at my business and have several friends who are also very pleased.

New windows in a century old home

We used Pollard Windows to replace all the windows in our home and are delighted. Both the actual windows and service were top notch. The windows have added to the beauty of our home as well as increasing its energy
efficiency and market value. The sales advice provided by Mark Adamson was honest, knowledgeable and very helpful and the installation by Ron Ewan was professional and beautifully executed.

Our home is in a Heritage Conservation District where all exterior renovations must meet strict criteria. A local heritage committee has been established to preserve the architectural integrity and historic character of the neighbourhood. Members of the committee went so far as to
compliment our new Pollard Windows remarking on their appearance.

Our experience from start to finish with Pollard Windows has been very satisfying and we will continue to recommend their services to others.
