Ductless Air Conditioning

We needed two new ductless air units in our older Toronto home. We went with this company because they had previously installed our boiler and we were happy with their service. Not so happy now. They sent one of their guys promptly who took a look at the old unit, agreed it needed replacing, confirmed the location for a second new unit and sent us a quote. We signed off on it and set up an installation date two weeks later. When the guys came to install it they refused to do it because the outside unit is at second floor level and they apparently needed a lift. Which was 100% obvious to the first guy and had also been shown on the photos my husband sent them when booking the first appointment. Fine, we agreed to pay for rental of the lift and asked for a new installation date. They ignored our calls for two days then called on Saturday to say they weren’t going to do it at all. Too dangerous apparently. So now we are without A/C during the hottest week of the summer. And scrambling to find another supplier. Completely unimpressed. Why couldn’t they have told us three weeks ago that they weren’t going to be able to do this?? There is absolutely no way that the first guy could have missed seeing the location of the unit. This is NOT good customer service and we won’t be using this company again.

Negligence with regards to extended warranty that was purchased

I purchased a furnace from them along with installation. The furnace came with a 5-year warranty and Laird and Son offered, quoted and sold the furnace based on a 10-year warranty (5-year bonus). The 10-year warranty was quoted, written in the invoice and paid for, however, it required that the furnace be registered with the manufacturer within 60 days of the installation. This, like other rebates and paperwork, L&S said that THEY would take care of doing it all.

Six years later when a part is needed under warranty, as I found out after calling the manufacturer, L&S failed to register the furnace with the manufacturer within 60 days of installation, and so the furnace warranty was only for the standard 5 years. Of course, L&S wants nothing to do with this anymore because I chose to not use them for the maintenance.

And, the extended warranty did not even apply to labour because that required me signing-up for a separate, multi-hundred dollar maintenance contract only with L&S each and every year without interruption).

That's negligence on L&S' part that penalizes and costs only the customer. The manufacturer won't honour the 10-year warranty because they stand to sell more equipment, and L&S stands to have another installation.....well, not with me.

If it wasn't for a perpetually growing city where losing a client doesn't mean much to a company, these companies would have to be a lot more professional and fight harder to retain customers and their satisfaction. Fly-by-night or so-called reputable professionals...they are all the same.

Company Response

Dear user,

This certainly would not happen if we made an error in registering equipment we would always honor what we said and we would eat the bill on the parts labour. Please email us at servicedepartment@lairdandson.com so we can look into this for you. Very sorry to hear about this, this is certainly the first time we are hearing this. There have been cases over the years where we have indeed neglected to register equipment in error and every single time we have covered the part and held up our end of the agreement.

not taking responsibility for their jobs

[you can see how dishonest they can be in their reply.
I must respond! First the illegal piece was AT THE FURNACE (SEE PICTURE)... not far away like they pretend! It was at the place where they attached the gaz line just in front on the furnace, HOW COULD THEY HAVE MISSED IT?

I did say in my review that I didn't call because of the pandemic. This is what they also refuse to acknowledge. Just do not want to be in anyway helpful. I read some of their answer to complain and find they use this tone of blaming the customer before going out of their way to find solutions... is this how a reputable business work?]

Just before the pandemic I had my AC repaired by Laird and Son.
I had a compressor problem, they said it was a capacitor problem. I am not an expert... so I let them do their job.
It stopped working during summer 2020... middle of pandemic. I wanted to call them after pandemic is over, now they just say I am too late. I hate this kind of company where service does not really mean service!.

[As an aside, this is not my first bad impression of them. Some time ago they installed my gas furnace. When they inspect it in 2019, they tell me there is an illegal connector running thread gas fitting (just at the furnace!). But... they installed the furnace to it? And now they charge me an extra $339, taking absolutely no responsibility of their own work. I complained then, I complain again now... their answer, its my responsibility?]

So overall I do not recommend at all.

Company Response

As a reputable company who is known for being straight forward and transparent we feel we deserve the chance to clarify this review as it's very misleading.

We will go back to customers homes infinite amounts of time to repair things if we got something wrong which once in a blue moon does happen . In this case not one call or email was made to us after the repair in 2019 with your AC letting us know it wasn't working , nor was any call or email made to us in the entire year of 2020 letting us know it wasn't working (record heat wave ). Now even one month after this year's heat wave you still only reached out to us now in the middle of June. This is almost 2 years later sir, and there could be any number of issues with your AC unrelated to our work in 2019.

As far as the illegal fitting, that fitting was there from decades ago and not installed during the new furnace. The installers cannot identify every fitting in your house when doing a retrofit furnace swap out , hence when a service person came 10 years later and noticed it we charged you to remove it (which was down the line not at the furnace and tied into all the other house piping ).

We would say hope this clarifies the issue , but we already told you this all prior to the review being made.

Thanks .

Duct Cleaning

I used Laird and Sons for duct cleaning. The gentleman was very professional, full of knowledge and pleasant to deal with.

Our vents weren't terribly dirty, but we wanted to make sure nothing has accumulated in the vents over the years.

Would recommend Laird and Sons for duct cleaning!

leaking pipes around radiant floor motor

I have used Laird & Son for my furnace and duct maintenance for years and have always been happy with their work. I noticed a leak around the inflow and outflow pipes for the radiant floor motor the other day; Shut off the water supply - so no emergency. I called Laird & Son to see if it was something they can fix; they were unsure but sent a technician out to have a quick look. Michael arrived, very professional, looked at the system and took some pics. Unfortunately, it was something that he felt would be most appropriate for a plumber to fix, based on the complexity. However, Michael shared the pictures taken with Noah from the service department and circulated them to various tradesmen to help solve our problem. There was no charge for the service and great care.

resting on their laurels

Very disappointed with their advice and service. I chose them based on their reputation. They replaced a furnace and installed air conditioning. The person I use to check my furnace annually, found that the furnace did not have the proper piping. Rust had started to form already and would shorten the life of the furnace. The air conditioning system I chose doesn't work as I had hoped - the upstairs is very cool and the downstairs is warm. The advice should have been to choose an air conditioner for each floor. The cost would have been the same. When I called to have these issues resolved, they were not welcoming and while they sent a technician, he said things were just fine. I was told that they don't pay much attention to the opinions of other folks. Lesson learned: research the CURRENT state of affairs for a company.

Thanks for the review and sorry if things haven't worked out . None of the management here knows of this particular case , if you would be so kind to send an email to servicedepartment@lairdandson.com that would be great so we can verify this .

Emergency furnace repair and maintenance

Called for emergency furnace repair during a very cold spell. Mack arrived in a few hours and did a temporary repair. A few days later Bryan installed a new part and performed furnace maintenance. Both were very professional, knowledgeable, and pointed out issue with the original installation that they corrected. Very happy with the service.

furnace repair

I was very pleased with the professional and efficient manner that Noah tackled the problem of my furnace not working. He was like a detective in finding the source of the problem and had it solved quickly. The work and parts was under warranty .

the $440 thermostat

I had the tech from Laird and son come by to get my boiler working, nice enough guy , showed up on time but he could not figure out how the multiple thermostats worked so was going to leave and not charge me because he wasn't able figure out the problem Needing heat , I instructed him to hook up only one of the stats and he told me $250, pretty steep , but I needed heat .I get the bill, $440 total , $132 for diagnostic, which he couldn't do and the agreed upon $250 for 1 hr to hook up stat plus tax . Once the boiler was turned on , it had a Carbon Dioxide reading that was too high and was shut down ,not their fault .The boiler needed cleaning but they could not do it for 3 days, the cost , $550 plus tax , I got another company in a day and a half later at $250 plus tax . at the end of the day , it cost me 440 bucks to hook up a thermostat . Being in construction myself, I understand the complexities of maintenance work, especially HVAC . I found the invoice for work done very detailed which is good, but I find the shop rate abnormally high, and am not happy I got charged $132 for a service that was not performed

Poor service to client of 17 years

Laird installed our ductless AC unit 17 years ago and we had great service. In 2020 when we wanted to replace it we had at least 3 site visits, talked with 4 different people, and consistently received conflicting information as they continually found new problems - no one would climb more than 3 steps on a ladder, current placement could not be matched, a hydro insulation blanket needed to be ordered - although by the time they told us this, they KNEW that the appointment would have to be delayed but did not tell us. We finally cancelled and got another provider and they were FANTASTIC! A new AC in the same spot - no hassles, no excuses.
IN RESPONSE TO THE COMPANY REPLY: I HAD NO MOTIVATION TO DECEIVE. IT WAS THEIR REPRESENTATIVE WHO STATED THEY COULD NOT GET THEIR GUYS TO CLIMB MORE THAN THREE FEET. HOMESTARS DID NOT ALLOW ME TO NAME THE LOCAL BUSINESS WHO EASILY DID THE WORK WITH SUCH A GREAT ATTITUDE - BUT IT IS A FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS ON BAYVIEW!

Company Response

In the new era of reviews companies are expected to say sorry for things they didnt do and to just accept what people say. But in this case it should be known to anybody reading this review that what you are saying is 100% false. Except for the fact that we had our installer come back again because your neighbor didnt want the condenser in the original location that you asked for . So yes it required a couple visits including the original diagnostic by a service technician. Very misleading . Next, your current location is on a pitched roof requiring a 10 foot ladder and the high voltage line from the road is within inches of it. So the 3 feet of step ladder very misleading as well. Safety standards and workers rights to be safe are paramount to any reputable firm and your lines should have been wrapped by the power company and insulated for safety. Next, your appointment was booked fully on a Thursday contingent on Ontario Hydro coming to turn off the power or wrap the lines. Next, you cancelled the job yourself on the monday before because you wanted us to call Ontario Hydro to do it for you. Only the homeowner can turn off their own power , we cannot do that for you. We are thrilled you found a company to help you out though you should let everybody know who they are.

Thanks
