Our water heater stoped working and since we have been renting it from Enercare we called them for service. I should mention this is the first time ever that we had any trouble with it. The Enercare technician Ivan seemed to be in a bad mood from the moment of his arrival, our questions were met with a passive-aggressive attitude. He stated before even touching it that the water heater is very old and needs to be replaced. He replaced the copper coil and subsequently the water heater seemed to work well. He stated however that the CO emissions are too high and turned it off, attaching a Red Tag, told us we need to buy another one. As the measuring device he used seemed to keep alarming even when not in use, we have asked if perhaps something is not wrong with it - he answered that Enercare “pays through their nose to have it calibrated yearly, and it is valid until September".
As the water heater was checked relatively recently by Enercare as part of the maintenance and we were told at that time that the emissions are way below cut off, we have asked for a second opinion from another HVAC company. This technician inspected it very thoroughly, checked the CO emissions which were found to be 6 ppm (which is way below the 100 ppm that the Enercare technician stated they are).
We are extremely disappointed with the dishonest service we have received form the Enercare technician. We paid approx $23 per month for many years for the rental, we think now those were wasted money, as it seems that in order to have a proper service we had to pay another company for this. In the 15 years that we lived in this house all Enercare has done for that fee is to have it checked once as maintenance. Again, we would have expected that at least the one time we needed their help they could have provided an honest service.
If it wouldn’t have been summer and hence the perspective of cold showers not so daunting, and if we wouldn’t have known that the CO emissions have been relatively recently way below the limit, we might have been fooled into buying or renting a new water heater from Enercare - the technician did his best to present the benefits of this. Yes, the water heater is old but it is working and if we decide to change it we prefer to do so after a thorough research and without being falsely pressured into doing so.
