Whole Home Renovation

After meeting with several contractors, we hired Ashton Renovations to do an extensive renovation on our house, including designing and renovating our kitchen, turning our unfinished basement into a family room and creating a new three-piece bathroom. From the start, we were impressed with Mark’s consultative approach.

This was our first home renovation and throughout the process Mark was always responsive to our questions and promptly returned our calls. His crew and tradespeople were respectful and friendly, and always keep the job site clean. The team’s attention to detail and craftsmanship are impressive. The pandemic significantly delayed our project, but Mark kept us informed throughout. When it was safe to resume work, the COVID-19 safety protocols that he put in place left us feeling reassured about allowing the trades back into our house to finish the job.

We are so pleased with all aspects of our renovation and would highly recommend Mark and his team.

Whole house renovation

We had Ashton renovation complete an extensive kitchen and bathroom renovation on our 100 year old Toronto home. After considering several home renovation companies across the city, it was their thoughtful, organized and thorough design and build plan that sold us.

The Ashton Renovation team was incredibly collaborative, professional, and responsive and they exceeded our every expectation. Our renovation included knocking out an exterior brick wall to create an open concept kitchen, enlarging and completely overhauling our upstairs bathroom, brand new plumbing and electrical, as well as updating our front entry and basement. Mark was an excellent project manager. He included us in all decision making and provided updates and expert advice along the way. He managed the trades people and renovation schedule meticulously. They were on time, courteous, impressive, and maintained a clean worksite.

Ashton Renovations took all necessary precautions related to Covid-19 so that we felt safe and comfortable throughout the renovation process.

We couldn’t be happier with the outcome! We highly recommend Ashton Renovation to anyone undertaking an extensive renovation on their home. They are experts when it comes to navigating the challenges of renovating an old home.

Bathrooms Reno and other house repairs

We worked with Ashton Renovations (Mark, Chris and their network of professionals) to renovate our 2.5 bathrooms and other miscellaneous repairs around the house. We bought our house last year and we were new to renovations (prior condo dwellers). Initially, we just wanted to renovate two outdated bathrooms, and as the renovations progressed each day, we increasingly felt our powder room (not included in the original renovation plan) was more than just an eyesore, we then asked Mark to add the powder room on the list as well. Mark always communicated well and updated us the renovation status timely, he always tried to think from a client’s perspective such as what is necessary and what is nice but costly and unnecessary, so clients have options to choose whatever fits into their needs and budget. Everyone on Mark’s team is highly professional, respectful, and friendly, and they focused a lot on the details. We are very happy with our bathrooms and other minor repairs!

Since we are new to home renovations, we had lots of questions for Mark and Chris, including things that were completely out of scope of bathroom renovations. They were always patient and explained things to us in detail, and they made practical recommendations to us, we also learned some painting techniques from them. We would definitely recommend Ashton Renovations. To us, Mark, Chris and the team are not just transactional contractors, they are partners who helped us fixed our house from the beginning (literally before we even moved in), and will help us with maintenance and fixes in the future.

Thanks for your review. All the trades appreciated your kindness, and the daily snacks that you put out as well. LOL Much appreciated. Your patience and understanding during the pandemic was also great. It was hard on all of us.

Exterior renovation

We hired Mark for a complicated job rebuilding a very old and badly damaged carport with a roof that wraps around our house covering our front foyer, an outdoor shed, and a back patio. The job involved the coordination of many trades and was complicated by an early winter and then the pandemic. However, Mark did an excellent job and was always very responsive and a pleasure to deal with. He was quick to remedy issues and provide information on budget, next steps, and to work with us on a rebuild that matched our vision. I would definitely hire Mark again.

Old house partial renovation

We worked with Mark Ashton on a pretty intricate old house partial renovation where we finished our basement, replaced all plumbing right out to the street, rerouted and expanded HVAC, completely rebuilt an upstairs washroom and added another in the basement, and added an island and dishwasher on the main floor of our tiny kitchen. This project was complex with a lot of dependencies and we were living in the house throughout, so it presented a lot of challenges. Mark and his team & network did an amazing job of getting things exactly the way we wanted, and though the project took longer than expected due to some surprises discovered along the way, we knew that there was always a focus on quality work. When certain subcontractors messed up (it happens), the problem was always corrected to get it right, with no extra costs - they stand by their work which is important. Having their experience and suppliers to draw from was an asset, and led us to a better end result than we had initially imagined. We're happy with the result, and our house is much more liveable now, thanks Ashton Renovations!

Kitchen renovation

We bought our home in the upper beaches area back in 2016. Ever since we moved in we knew we wanted to redo the kitchen, it was a mess, it just took so long to finally decide to do it as it is such a huge investment. For our dream kitchen to come to life, we needed a lot of renovations:
- Structural changes to the wall in the dining room and the load bearing wall that ran through the kitchen. Mark and his team put in the extra work to ensure the structure and foundation was to code and safe. The beam that replaced the load bearing wall was supported on the main floor as well as in the basement with appropriately placed support posts.
- Chris spent a lot of time ensuring that our warped floor was level before we even considered flooring and cabinets - something other contractors have overlooked in the past.
- In addition to the structure changes, the Ashton team also tackled: flooring, plumbing, electrical, drywall, hvac, installation of a new oven hood (finally!), dishwasher, a brand new sink and most importantly - our new cabinets. The trim work was impeccable and the painting was performed with precision.
- The cabinets are the staple piece of our new kitchen. They are made of plywood with high quality hardware. Not only are they robust, but also look very sleek.

Most importantly, Mark, Chris and the rest of the Ashton team were an absolute pleasure to work with. Also to mention, our first baby was on the way so it was stressful having a house under construction. Mark is very trustworthy and gives you the sense that you are in good hands. He explains the process well, keeps you informed on progress and was always available when we needed him most! Chris is a fantastic general contractor - he does great work. He also makes you feel comfortable and that you are in good hands - this is especially important because kitchen renovations can be stressful.

We would highly recommend Ashton Renovations to anyone that wants a fantastic kitchen with intelligent design and a great customer experience.

Thank you Mark, Chris and team for everything you guys did for us!

2 Bathrooms and a kitchen

We worked with Ashton Renovations to redo our kitchen and two bathrooms, along with other projects around the house that weren’t full rooms. Our house is over 100 years old and has no right angles anywhere. We’re very happy with the way things turned out, and would recommend working with Mark and team.

Things we appreciated:

• Mark is a trained designer and had a good feel for our style
• He was able to make strong recommendations for products/finishes
• All of the contractors and suppliers in his network were easy to work with and did quality work
• We were well informed on the price of the original scope and the cost implications of decisions we made along the way
• His level of service remained high right through the very end of the project
• Everyone on his team is respectful and friendly, which seems to be a reflection of how this company operates
• We love our house

Things we learned:

• The homeowner is the most motivated person to get the job completed. Therefore, they can be expected to push the hardest
• Questions are important… if you have a concern, address it right away
• Everyone can contribute to a creative solution to a unique problem

Thanks for such a detailed review!

I have to say that we are most proud and thankful for the comments regarding our contractors. We are all a team, but they are the ones that put the design and vision together. Most of us have been working together for over 15 years now, and we like to consider ourselves as a family. I am happy that this has come across to our clients as well.

L and K Connell Complete Kitchen Reno

We are more than satisfied with our brand new kitchen- we are thrilled! The end result is far better than what we had imagined. The quality of the workmanship is stellar. Mark steered us to suppliers who gave us just what we wanted. Every single member of the crew was personable, capable and very respectful of our home and our dogs. Mark was able to accommodate our request to do the gutting of the kitchen while we were away which gave us the best possible start to our project. The whole process took longer than we would have liked (just over 4 months) but now that it is finished the wait was worth it. We spent more than we had planned but this was mainly due to our own choices
Mark has a calm demeanour and put us at our ease from the initial visit. This was crucial for us since we had never hired a contractor before. We had always done our own teardown and hired family members for carpentry, etc. In fact, this was the biggest hurdle we had to get over in order to proceed. It was easily done.
We have complete faith in Mark, his brother Chris and the entire crew and recommend them without reservation. Thanks guys!

Kitchen Renovation

Ashton Renovations (Mark and Chris) did such a great job with our Kitchen and Dining room renovation. We have, and we will continue to, recommend Ashton Renovations to family and friends.
We had a newborn and a 3 year old, and, for some reason, we thought it a good time to renovate! Mark and Chris took great care in making sure everything went smoothly and managed our demands to move quickly, where possible.
Mark offered us great design advice along the way and took the time to carefully explain our budget and how each decision would affect our budget plan. Chris was always on hand to make sure the quality of work matched their high standards for safety and craftsmanship.
On every job, there is always some unexpected turns (in our case, a decade old exterior wall leak), and while there were tense times, we always trusted their judgement and commitment to doing the job right, the first time.
We plan to invite Ashton Renovations back for a quote on our garage/secondary suite design, if they are interested (and we get the permits ;))

Thanks David

When we returned to take some photos of your renovation, we were happy to see how nicely it turned out now that all the tools are gone and the construction work is done. Glad the ceiling in the back room is higher and everything feels warm and cozy. We appreciate your kind comments.

Complete Kitchen, Bathroom renovation + whole house flooring, paint and exterior windows/doors

We recently completed a whole house renovation with Ashton Renovations. The core project took approximately 4 months and then a few months for final finishes after we moved back in. We completely gutted the kitchen, bathroom, all the wood floors are new, windows and exterior doors all new on the main, paint throughout, updated plumbing and electrical. The results are outstanding and the quality is excellent.

After interviewing several contractors, we actually lost confidence that we could get this job done within the budget we wanted to spend (and the scope we wanted). Mark's relaxed but organized, flexible and consultative approach to renovation projects restored our confidence, and is what made this a success for us. We liked his approach to project management, and his process/steps right away and helped make it easier for us to understand what to do. I also appreciated having his guidance in materials selection sources that was within our style, quality needs and budget. The whole team is easy to work with, friendly and are passionate about what they do. Having never renovated before, it took a little longer than we anticipated with some delays (unavoidable) - make sure to assume more time than you think and expect some challenges.

We are already planning our basement renovation with Mark and can't wait to get started!

Hi Erin

It really was a pleasure being in your home, and all the guys I must say felt the same way.

Thanks for initially sharing your experience about finding a contractor, and some of those challenges. I found that very informative and interesting. We are glad in the end that we were able to help you out and get your house renovated.

I do try to be relaxed because sometimes renovations can be stressful with a lot going on. LOL But that’s why I always say it’s about following a system, and then all is well. I’m glad you found this helpful. I do have to give credit, to be honest though, to Builder Trend - our project management software provider. They help us keep things tremendously organized, as well as our clients informed.

Your basement plans are coming soon, and we are very much looking forward to transforming that space too.
