We found Eric on Homestars. He came pretty promptly and was quite receptive to fixing our lawn sprinkler system. The heads had been installed incorrectly by the previous owner so that some areas were not getting watered properly. He spent an afternoon moving the sprinkler heads into proper positions, changing heads to give properly water coverage, and testing the system to make sure it all worked. He did the work for a pretty good price, compared to other companies. We've asked him to come back this season to help us with our landscape lighting setup. We're looking forward to working with him again.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Maybe consider getting a better bluetooth phone set - understanding him while he's using it is a bit difficult.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Ask other companies for quotes first, then ask Green Tropics - you'll probably be surprised at how reasonable Eric's rates are. We were!

Terrible service, terrible professionalism. The main contact person was Michael, who I understand had purchased the landscape/snow removal company from someone else recently. We placed reflective posts around our driveway to make sure they would see the boundaries our driveway. At the end of January they drove over the post and over a garden sprinkler. We were very patient with them through the snow removal season, asking them to just be careful the following time. Two weeks later they ran over a patch of boxwoods we had by our front door. They refused to admit it was them, until I told them I had seen footage of them doing so on our surveillance camera. At the end of the season we asked them to come by and look at the damage and see if they could replace or repair the damage. They did not return our calls. When we did finally get through to them, they said they would come - and then we never heard from them again. We had neighbours who were using them for their landscaping services, but they've told me that they're getting a new company because Sousa Landscaping had damaged their eavestroughs. SUMMARY: They will not take responsibility for damage they're done to your property. Difficult to get on the phone, unresponsive to requests for help. Stay away from this company.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Be more responsive to customers, and more responsible with their work.... and NOT DAMAGE PROPERTY.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Stay away from Sousa Landscaping and Snow Removal.

Arborvalley are fantastic. They have helped us rejuvenate our property for over a year now, and we will continue to work with them in the future. Peter (Master Arborist) has been terrific to work with. He has provided extremely helpful advice about our trees and our property, and has done everything from pruning to complete replacement. Next year he will begin a mulching program for our front garden. Highly knowledgable, and very accessible by phone or email. What I like most of all is that there is no pressure at all - he provides thorough estimates and leaves it to us to decide what is important to us. Highly, highly recommended!!

I dealt directly with Chris, the head of the company. He came very quickly (within 24 hours) for the first appointment, and quickly diagnosed the problem as red squirrel(s). At the same appointment he got to work, closing up 4 holes in the attic and setting up a one-way door for the squirrels to exit from but not enter. By the way, our house is really tall and Chris had no problems climbing up a ladder and working on our roof. It was dangerous work and he did it without complaining once. It turns out this squirrel was particularly mischievous and kept finding ways to return to our attic. But here's the great thing - this squirrel was no match for Chris. He stood by his workmanship and returned to our home - free of charge - every time the squirrel returned. He even brought extra staff with him to help look for potential entry points to our home. He even apologized for not being able to come in on a Sunday!!! What a guy. We have enjoyed more than a month now of peace and quiet. We still see squirrels running around our yard and in the trees but it (they) seem to have found a home somewhere else other than our attic. All thanks to Chris. I really commend him and his company for their high quality work and their commitment to customer satisfaction. I would not hesitate to recommend them to others.

Dependable Home Tech were very difficult to work with. I asked them to remove a "temporary" cable which should have been removed long before. From first installation of the temporary cable to installation of the permanant cable, it took well over two months. Communication with them was difficult. Their lines are often busy and ask that you leave a message. Each message I left was not returned. After many phone calls they finally scheduled an appointment. Unfortunately they failed to call prior to arrival like they said they would. Two days later when I got them on the phone it turns out they had come but needed to return on a later date - I can understand this, but it would have been nice to have been told this in the first place. On the day of the second appointment they gave a 3 hour window in which they would show. They couldn't even respect that, and arrived well after that window. The actual job, where they removed the "temporary" cable and installed a permanent "aerial drop" cable, was fine, except that they care more about finishing the job quickly than making the cables tight. In the end the cables were draped through the backyard, and look quite sloppy. Dependable Home Tech was frustrating, and I would not recommended them.

What could this company do to improve their services?
1) Improve access to their customer service lines. It's difficult to get through, and you are forced to leave messages. 2) Follow-through on phone calls when they say they will call, especially on appointment days. 3) Return phone calls when customers leave messages. 4) Pay more attention to the quality of the cable installation, tightening the cables, rather than just doing a "quick and easy" sloppy job. 5) Finish their work efficiently - rather than waiting 2 months between the temporary and permanent cable installations.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
I would say be home to supervise their work. Left unsupervised, you have no idea what they will make your backyard look like with all the new cables.

ORIGINAL REVIEW - rating 6/10 (originally published Nov 23, 2009) - also, see Addendum below (Dec 10, 2009) Overall, we were not that happy with our move experience with Ultimate Choice. We were really optimistic about choosing them given their great Homestars.ca review (9.6 when we moved), but unfortunately our expectations were not met. Working with Michelle and Keith, the owners of the company, was great. Keith came by to do the in-home estimate and was kind and professional. Michelle had a great phone manner and was always courteous and prompt. However, the move experience was a different story altogether. Time issues: The movers arrived an hour late. We tried our best to help them out, moving and dismantling things on our own, and bringing things from the basement and top floors to the ground floor so it would be easier for them to load the truck. Despite the estimate of 8 hours and one trip, the move still took close to nine hours, despite our efforts to help - and also required two trips. This surprised us as we had actually gotten rid of some of the things that had been counted in the estimate. Mud tracked into house: The movers did not come with shoe-covers despite the rainy day, telling us that they had to be pre-ordered in advance. If this is the case, then perhaps company policy should be changed - it is clear that if there is rain (and, sometimes, when it is dry), mud and dirt will be tracked into the house, so why not be prepared for this? It seems silly to have the customer have to “pre-order” shoe-covers for the movers. Unfortunately, as was expected, they did track a fair bit of mud onto our carpets, especially after it started raining that day. Many smoke breaks: The team took many cigarette breaks. I understand the need to smoke and the inconvenience of doing so in the rain, however, by smoking either a) in the garage with the door to the house open, or b) in the moving truck where our furniture was, we ended up with cigarette smoke everywhere during the move. Fortunately they were receptive to our requests about this issue. Wet stuff: One of our biggest annoyances was that a lot of our furniture and boxes ended up wet - not just covered in a few sprinkles because of the rain, but certain sections or patches were completely drenched. I don’t know how this happened but I suspect that there was a fair amount of water entering the truck somehow, or maybe pooling on the floor of the truck. We had sofa cushions, etc. that ended up quite wet. Stuff not wrapped: They took the time to wrap some of the bigger furniture items, such as our sofas and desks. I was pleased that they dismantled the beds and reassembled them at our new home. However, I was surprised that they did not take the time to wrap up our pictures, mirrors, etc. These things were simply carried out into the truck and strapped against the interior wall of the truck. Thankfully these things were not broken. However.... Nicks/scratches: Unfortunately there many nicks and scratches in our items after the move was completed. There was no major damage to the furniture but we were quite surprised and disappointed, as we unpacked our items over the next few days, about how many new scratches had been introduced to our things from the move. Movers: The movers were pleasant enough. One of them seemed somewhat reluctant to work but the other two were both friendly and seemed experienced. They were receptive to our requests. Security system: One final note - we used several of the coupons for Ultimate Choice that were offered on Homestars.ca. The free packing kit and 20 free boxes were fantastic and the $50 off coupon was nice as well. However, we also wanted to take advantage of the coupon for the free security system installation, so we informed one of the staff members (Phyllis) of this. Unfortunately, 4 weeks after the move, we have yet to hear from the alarm company. In summary, we had high hopes for this move experience, which were not met. It's nice that so many other Ultimate Choice customers have had positive experiences with them, but in the end we were not one of their happy customers. ADDENDUM to review - rating 11/10! Posted December 10, 2009 After reading our review in Homestars, Michelle from Ultimate Choice contacted us so we could elaborate on our problems with the move. She apologized on the behalf of the movers and the company for our ordeal, and immediately offered to compensate us for our carpet cleaning costs. She also arranged for a furniture detailer to come by, evaluate the damage to any wood furniture, and touch it up. Finally, she sent an upholstery cleaner in to shampoo our sofa and couch. She was, as usual, very professional about everything and I repeat that she has always been a pleasure to work with. We have been working over the last couple of weeks to resolve the issues, arranging an appointment for the furniture detailer to evaluate the damage and a second appointment to touch up the furniture. Michelle and I have communicated several times by telephone and email. I'm happy to say that we have received our cleaning compensation, and our follow-up experiences have been excellent. It's refreshing to see a company take such responsibility for their actions and we were very surprised and impressed with this followup. Well done! I would rate them as 11/10 for their follow-up, and I think they deserve an impressive final rating of 9/10. Thanks Michelle!
