The numerous positive reviews have convinced me to hire this contractor last year to build the driveway borders, interlock walkway, patio and install the armour stone culvert support, overall a fairly large project. In a couple of days, seeing how the work proceeds, I started developing an uncertain feeling about the quality of work. We’ve noticed that this team of students were cutting the corners in many occasions but unfortunately it was too late to retreat. As an example, when the interlock edging was missed at the patio and I was told that the dirt would hold the stone I have finally realized that it had been a gross mistake hiring this contractor. Plus, at some locations, they left the unfilled gaps between pavers, so I had to fill them himself. As anticipated, the first winter has brought unpleasant results. Because of the improperly built base water has lifted and displaced the half of the walkway pavers. The armour stone, which was installed to support the culvert, started moving aside affecting the newly paved asphalt and the whole structure looked rather ugly (although it wasn’t pretty in the first place). As to the written warranty, we didn’t have a chance to experience it but, with their attitude and lack of skills and resourcefulness, I wouldn’t trust this contractor to fix things anyway. However one thing, which this contractor is doing effectively, is selling. One full star is given in this review, as the patio and borders still hold. To compare, four years ago, we completed the similar project at the previous house and the quality of work was exemplary while the price was lower. Update: after one year, the grass starts growing between interlock pavers of the driveway borders one more time telling about the "quality" of work.

When I did the site visit in the spring Henry I recommended installing a weeping tile which would take the trapped water away from the walkway and house.

I explained that a small section of your walkway that heaved was caused by water pooling in between the walkway, the house and the raised garden that you built. Subsequently the trapped water freezing and thawing has heaved the area.

Unless the weeper is installed you will have this problem every year. If we were notified of this excessive water when we built your walkway, we would have installed a weeper.

There is nothing wrong with the base. If there was the entire walkway would have shifted - not four pavers. It was a simple fix and not a costly one but you declined.

Connected with William in advance knowing their are busy during the season. I can tell the following: Excellent timely communications Pleasant attitude of William and his team Good understanding of needs Timely completion, no delays Excellent quality of work, right grading and material. We had another contractor who has installed the interlock borders. William and team arrived as soon as they've finished, no delays despite the busy season. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the positive review, Henry, and thanks for noticing the smaller things about running a service company. We work around your schedule, not ours. We're pleased your renovations ran like clockwork.
All the best.

I've read good reviews about this company and expected the same described quality. Here is the story: Individuals praised in previous reviews have not been present. There were two folks, recent newcomers to Canada. They tried their best I had to assume. However, no experience was observed. The speed of work was rather slow. For example, while one person organized items inside the truck the other was watching him and commenting instead of carrying other items. Since the fees were based on the hours the picture didn’t look encouraging. Twenty pounds pieces have been carried by two people. They were obviously taking their time. I was helping while being twice faster than movers. There were some scratches on the walls and furniture but I didn’t pay much attention to this. The style of work was obviously from another world. Basically, the efficiency wasn’t there.

The work included driveway, walkway and porch with natural stone steps. We’ve met a number of contractors to obtain quotes and define who we feel more comfortable with to proceed. All of them were present on the Home Stars and had decent references. Some of them offered a lower price however suggesting the cheaper material. The M.E. guys had been the last before we’ve made a decision. The cost was at the higher end and the selected material was pricy but we hoped that the quality would be adequate. I can tell that Eitan behaved the way customers usually prefer. He listened, wasn’t too talkative and made a couple of useful recommendations. Besides, M.E. has addressed our time constraints by completing the work on time. Some touch-ups were done later and it wasn’t a problem to us. The work quality fully met our expectations and excellent reviews on the Home Stars are fully justified based on our experience. All work has been accomplished by mostly one person (thank you, Corey) in a very professional manner. Corey has also made some suggestions on the material and overall design. At the end, the driveway looked more expensive than the house itself. If you decide to hire M.E. Contracting I’d suggest listening to their recommendations. They deserve a full 10 rating.

Hired Avalon because of the good reviews. Had to experience multiple problems, such as: Date changes Multiple visits for various reasons: incorrect size, deficient sink cutout, wrong color installed. In addition, we couldn't get the right color because out of six colors chosen at the Avalon website none was available. We had no choice but to have one countertop made of the piece found at the Avalon shop, which was our only option, although undesirable. Many colors presented on the Avalon website are non-existent, as our experience has shown. There were other small deficiencies. Conclusion: although the price was competitive and attitude rather polite, contractor has created a lot of hussle and the quality was below expected. You get what you paid for. Do I recommend? Not really.

Company Response

Hello Henry, first of all, thank you once again for your business, we very much appreciate it. Moreover, thank you for the (negative) feedback, as we are always passionately seeking ways to improve our organization.
Although there are several claims that you made regarding Avalon, most of them seem to either be a severe misunderstanding or inaccurate.
First of all, regarding the date changes, we attempted to arrange different visits with you at your convenience and understanding that you and your wife both work, we wanted to arrange each visit at the best possible time for you. Also, please note that due to the fact that we are custom fabricators and installers, our process insures that our clients’ projects are completed with the highest integrity and accuracy in measurements, even if it takes several visits. Our philosophy is that it is better to get all the clarifications out of the way in the beginning rather than the end.
Your next accusation is that you did not get the right size, cutout, etc. First of all, your review should be made very clear that these accusations only apply to the vanities and NOT the kitchen project. As far as we are aware, you were fully satisfied with every aspect of the kitchen part of your project.
Moreover, although we did have some minor deficiencies on the sink cutout and other smaller issues, not only did we take full accountability, but we also guaranteed you that we would do whatever it takes to complete your full project as quickly as possible, and with the highest quality.
The colours issue was an obvious misunderstanding. We attempted to explain that when choosing materials for your vanities, the way to do it economically would be to choose it based on our remnants available at our fabrication site. This was clearly explained several times to you. Moreover, after presenting you with several options, we sent you to one of our remnant suppliers that carry hundreds of options, and even there you claimed not to find anything desirable. The colours shown on our website are all existent and available; however within the stone industry many stones have different marketing names depending on quarry source, suppliers, and so on. Again, this was clearly explained to you.
At the end of your review, you make some more accusations, and conclude with, “You get what you paid for”. We are very sorry that you feel this way, and if you were willing to have greater communications with our team, we would have done even more than we did to make sure you would have an overall positive experience with us. We are sorry that you would not recommend our services, and we look forward to continue to improve our products and services. Thank you for your feedback,
Regards,
The Avalon Granite & Marble Team
