»» QUARTZ SURFACES ««
Quartz slabs are man-made and engineered to be a very hard and durable surface suitable for high traffic areas where natural stone might not be an ideal choice. The slabs are formed in factories with Breton equipment by combining about 90 percent ground quartz (sand material) with about 10 percent resins, polymers and pigments. This material is aesthetically pleasing and found in a wide range of colors and patterns. Quartz is also scratch and stain resistant and does not need maintenance. Avoid putting anything hot on the surface because quartz is sensitive to heat due to its resin and polymer ingredients. There are many popular brands of quartz slabs available including CaesarStone, Silestone, Hanstone, MSI, Quorastone, Formica, Wilsonart, LG Viatera, Santa Margherita Quartz and more.
»» GRANITE SURFACES ««
When it comes to beautiful and long-lasting surfaces, it’s hard to beat granite. This stone is a type of igneous rock which is mostly composed of quartz, potassium feldspar and sodium feldspar. That mix of materials gives granite its trademark speckled appearance and makes it one of the toughest natural stones available for countertops and surfaces . Granite is very durable and more resistant than marble to scratches, etching and staining. Sealing your granite countertops once a year will help repel water, oils, and other kitchen liquids. If maintained properly, granite can retain its rich colors and surface finish for a lifetime. The slabs come in a wide range of colors and patterns, so there’s something to match almost any décor. Some popular colors are Nero Absolute, Black Galaxy, Fantacy White, Bianco Sardo, Cosmic Black, Alaska White, Atlantic Black, New Caledonia, Black Pearl, Ivory Fantacy, River White, Black Fusion, Silver Paradiso and more.
»» MARBLE SURFACES ««
Many homeowners select marble as their choice for countertops and surfaces in their homes. There is no question that marble is luxurious but is higher maintenance than other natural stones. Marble is more susceptible to staining etching and scratching. It also contains natural fissures and cracks that can be felt when touching the surface. For example, red wine or lime spills should be cleaned immediately otherwise they can stain or etch. Also, avoid cutting directly on the surface and instead use a wooden cutting board. Marble is gorgeous, rich and comes in many types, colors and patterns. To help keep marble countertops in good shape avoid putting hot pots and pans directly on the surface and instead place them on top of a kitchen towel or trivet. Also, sealing the marble every yearly will help resist spill stains. There are numerous slabs available in the market such as Blanco Carrara, Calacatta Extra, Statuario Extra, Bianco Lasa, Thassos White, Arabescato Breccia, Nero Marquina, Saint Laurent Marble, Pietra Grey, Emperador, Botticino and more.
»» PORCELAIN SURFACES ««
Porcelain is a beautiful man-made material similar to quartz and solid surface, however, it can be installed everywhere including outdoors because it’s heat/cold tolerant and completely UV resistant. Porcelain is extremely hard and non-porous making it resilient to etching, staining and scratching. This material is very popular on countertops, fireplaces, floors and walls and can look almost exactly like natural stone, thanks to ink jet production technologies. This material is very durable once installed and maintenance free but difficult to fix if chipped. Some notable porcelain brands are Geoluxe, Stile from MSI , Gigantec, Neolith, SapienStone Laminam, Stile from MSI, Maxfine, Grande Marble, Daltile and more.
»» QUARTZITE SURFACES ««
Quartzite is a naturally occurring metamorphic rock. This mineral comes from sandstone which undergoes high pressure and heat under the earth’s crust. Quartzite is generally less porous and harder than marble and granite which makes it more resistant to stains and scratches. This stone is commonly mistaken for marble because of its very similar color, veining & texture. Similar to other natural stones, it is recommended to seal you surfaces once a year to help repel water, oils and other kitchen liquids. You can find numerous shades of colors and designs of this stone in the market such as Taj Mahal, Calacatta Super White Quartz, Fantacy White, Classic White, Fusion Blue Quartz and more.
»» SOLID SURFACES ««
Solid surface sheets are man-made and manufactured using minerals, resins and pigments. These sheets have the same material and pattern all-through making them consistent and homogenous. They offer a seamless appearance of a continuous countertop and can be molded or thermoformed into curved shapes, unlike the other surfaces. Solid surface is nonporous and maintenance free, however, like quartz it’s not heat and UV proof. Therefore, avoid placing a hot pot directly on the countertop and do not install it in exterior applications. These countertops are susceptible to scratches and other impact damage but are relatively easier than other slab types to buff and fix. If you’re looking for a durable material with a wide array of colours, patterns and style then solid surface is an excellent choice but It should be noted that they aren’t the most accurate imitation of natural stone. Some of the available brands are Corian, Wilsonart, Avonite, Formica, HI Macs, Meganite, Staron, Livingstone and more.
