Hi George,
As explained we call it an "estimate" because we are making estimate on the footage needed. The process of providing a free estimate is based on being able to estimate the amount of lights needed to do the job through photos being sent to us. We assess the photos and make an estimate on how much footage we will need for the lights. As explained if we were to go to each home to get exact measurements the estimate would no longer be a free service nor would our cost of installs be able to be so low.
We serviced 77 customers this year with 23 of them being new clients such as yourself where we sold them lights. Two of the 23 we were short on our estimate (you and another client) In both cases we apologize for missing our estimate and adjusted the cost after explaining the updated amount of lights needed. Over the 8 years of providing this service we have missed an estimate on the short side roughly once per year and until this time all clients understand that an estimate can be missed and happily agree to purchase the small amount of lights needed to finish the job. While we do not wish to miss any estimate we feel that our system allows us to offer the free estimates and be efficient in servicing all requests in the short period of time that Christmas light installations are requested.
I would like to note that our cost of installation is reflective on how much lights we install and in your case we did not raise the cost of installation to account for the extra lights needing to be put up. This results in savings on installation which if you were a repeat customer yearly would far out place the cost of the one time cost for the extra lights needed.
I have only mentioned estimates where we were short of the lights needed. This year we overestimated on 2 homes where in the end we needed less lights than quoted. In both of these situations we adjusted our prices in the client's favor where they paid less than expected for both installation cost and cost of lights. To anyone reading this response that is considering using YYC Builders for their Christmas light install. I would like to make it clear that we do offer free estimates and as explained they are free because of the system we have implemented that allows us to quote remotely. We admit that occasionally our estimates are slightly off and in such cases we adjust the pricing to reflect this. Generally it is an adjustment that is $38 lower or higher than quoted.
Again, we apologize for missing the estimate on your lights, George. We do appreciate your feedback and are considering new methods to allow exact quoting processes every time while still being able to offer free estimates or adding extra details in initial client communications that explain potential for misses on estimates.
