My renovation involved modernizing an older (40 years) home. The kitchen, bathrooms, flooring, trim, painting and lighting all required an update, plus a wall needed to torn down, reinforced, and inspected by the city. It was a large renovation. I interviewed three different contractors; the first two just threw out numbers and suggestions and didn't seem to listen to my needs very well, whereas Sal listened intently and tried to gain an understanding of what I was trying to achieve. His quote, while not the cheapest, was the most detail oriented, realistic, and fair. After checking his references, I decided to go with Sal. Some setbacks did occur along the way; there were delays in getting a certain product in or a delay in the tiler coming in since they were finishing another project. Sal estimated the job would take 2 months (which seemed unrealistic to be honest), but in the end it took 3 months which was fair for the amount of work that went into everything. After 1 year, I'm still satisfied with the job him and his team did.
While it's very important to compare prices and get the best value for your money, also consider the personal relationship you build with the contractor. There will be setbacks you'll have to go through, but having a contractor that will work with you and make your life a bit easier is worth it. I think Sal and his team fit that description.
