Be careful with choosing this company for long distance moves
So where do I start, I decided to hire Number 1 Movers for my move from the east coast to the west coast, and this is the most stressful and disappointing move compared to all my moves in the past. Below are the summarized points that you may want to consider before signing Number 1 Movers:
1. FALSE ADVERTISEMENT:
a. Number 1 Movers explicitly told me that they will let me know the arrival (pickup) window at least one week, usually two weeks before actual arrival - exact words from their selling representative. However, they only gave me the notice one day ahead of time, and informed me that "tomorrow" is the only date they can accommodate my move. Note that I've been chasing them for weeks asking for the arrival window, they either ignored my call or told me "someone will get back to you by the end of the day, or latest tomorrow" but never called back.
b. Number 1 Movers clearly indicated in their ads, quotes and on the call that they WILL pay close attention to the furniture, and their crew WILL wrap them in blankets to avoid damages. Well let's take a look at the pictures below, that is the so called "taking care". No blanket, no wrapping, even no floor protection are in the place.
c. Number 1 Movers told me that their crew are hired my them, and that they have a reputation to maintain, while from drop off guy, the service is outsourced to a third party.
d. Number 1 Movers sales team told me that there won't be any "surprises" in fees which make them competitive comparing to the other moving companies. This is generally true, there are no big surprises, but a small one, the CC fee, if you are not paying cash, be aware there will be a $50 credit card fee and they won't tell you ahead of time. Besides, they do NOT accept debit card payment.
2. ABSOLUTELY NO PUNCTUALITY
a. Be aware this company is NOT punctual. Recall they only gave me less than one day notification, they then gave me an arrival window from 8am - 9:30am, however, their crew did NOT show up until 3pm in the afternoon. I've been waiting for the whole day, and thank God I have taken a day off.
3. DAMAGED FURNITURE
a. My Autonomous desk was not wrapped and it was damaged, and arrived super dirty, took me hours to clean up the white surface, let along all the scratches
b. The surface of the chair got damaged possibly by something sharp that was put on it. It is an expensive chair. Thank God it is still functional.
c. The corner of my sofa chair in Italian leather was abraded, and the chair smells like rotten tomato when it arrived in my new place... It was NOT wrapped in blanket after I emphasized again and again that the sofa chair requires special attention.
d. Moving boxes are all damaged to different extent.
4. MISSING ITEMS
a. Three of my moving boxes was so damaged that the lids were off the boxes, and my stuff could be falling out along the way...I still need to check my list. If you are to pick Number 1 Movers, make sure to tape up all your boxes, not just tape them as what Amazon does, you need to tape every corner and wrap the boxes up with the tape. Make sure NOT to put anything valuable in paper boxes, as they might get lost if the boxes are damaged badly...
b. They lost my brand new Mountain Bike. Literally speechless. I only have twenty some moving boxes, four pieces of furniture, and a bike. They are under 1000 lbs, and still they missed one, the most obvious one, and my bike is in light green, seriously, no one else could possibly miss a light green mountain bike...
All in all, be careful with your choice as it might turn into a big headache.
