Disasterous Fence Rebuild

My family and I were out of the country when our fence was destroyed by a windstorm. We hired Vito at Halton Deck and Fence upon a strong recommendation from a business associate, to replace the fence, as well as that of our two neighbours.

After several delays, the project was completed (again while we were out of the country). We released the funds for completion of the project in good faith. Upon returning home, we found that the fence was botched. There were 7 posts that were in need of being replaced as measurements we're done incorrectly and in order to make up the lack of height, pieces were glued to the top of fence posts, some up to 12 inches in length, thus compromising the integrity of the post. There are also several sections of the fence that were hung 6-8 inches too high, thus leaving large gaps under the fence. This was done despite the contractor being notified we had a dog that would be using the yard.

Once we realized that there was a problem, the owner was contacted immediately and was asked to resolve the issue. He gave many excuses and told us several times that what he has done to the fence posts was normal practice and we should be thankful that he did that because it meant the fence post holes were dug too deep and therefore the fence would be more stable, and that the aesthetics of the fence did not matter.

It took four weeks of constant contact with Vito to get him to come out and fix our fence. Excuse after excuse was given as to why he could not come to fix problems that were caused by his lack of knowledge on how to build a fence. We finally had to passive aggressively indicate we were about to file a small claims suit to get him to show up to fix the issues. It should never have gotten to that point. If we had not done that I believe that my fence would still be a total disaster.

We have a contract that states there is a six year warranty on workmanship. This was a selling feature. It clearly means very little, if it takes 3 months to get him to fix his initial mistakes. DO NOT hire this company!
