After such a good start, I couldn’t be more disappointed. I contacted Durham Bathrooms and after a prompt response and quick verbal quote from Elliot (the father), I was guaranteed that I would love their work, his family and the high end quality of their products. The next week after deciding to go forward, Elliot came and prepared the formal contract and it was signed and accepted. The next week, Elliot brought the foreman Bryce, who was very knowledgeable and did all of the measurements and said he would do some research.
The following day, Justin called to tell me that the budget was too tight. If I wanted the contracted work done, I would have to pay an additional $6,500. I said we can work within the signed contract budget but Justin said they wouldn’t make enough money. He said of course he’d like to work with me, but I’d have to decide whether I wanted to pay the extra $6,500 or he would put my deposit in the mail the next morning. I asked that he not put a $14,500 bank draft in the mail since it’s technically cash and asked if he would drop it off or I would pick it up. He said he would drop it off first thing in the morning.
No one showed up to drop off the deposit and later that morning, Justin said that his dad’s assistant had accidentally mailed it special delivery. It turns out that the cheque was not mailed. I drove to the address on their brochure but couldn’t find any signage and the main floor tenant told me they had space there but he had never seen them. There were texts with Justin and he said he took the bank draft to the Thornhill UPS and I drove in and picked it up. I couldn’t be more disappointed with what happened. Elliot prepared a full contract listing all of the work to be done and it was signed and accepted by both parties.
