main bath & ensuite reno and bedroom built-ins

My neighbour was very impressed with her kitchen reno from Joe/Jim martin. She asked me to come and see it. I was impressed with the work. I hired them first for my main bath. I loved it. I proceeded to hire them for a reno on my ensuite and custom built-ins for my bedroom. I also loved it. Friends of mine are impressed. I need a break from renos, but in a couple of years I will hire Joe and Jim for my kitchen reno.

Custom Closets and Doors

I had the misfortune of contracting Jim Martin sole proprietor and his son Joe to install custom wood closets and doors in my home. Jim claims to be a cabinet maker with 40 yrs experience and he and his son are taking large sums of money from people on Calgary Kijiji while poorly installing cabinetry. The primary installation was done by Joe, I complained because all the cabinet boxes and door frames were installed out of level and crooked. They then delayed the project for 4 weeks claiming they had taken on too much work. Upon return they poorly tried to fix their mistakes, still not leaving everything perfectly level. Now all the cabinetry doors have uneven gaps, are under/oversized and the drawer fronts aren't completely flushed with one another. They refused to remake the doors to try and resolve the issues and chose to terminate work without finishing installing all the drawers and all the finishing work. Now I am left with horrible crooked closets and still need to find someone to help fix their overpriced mess.

Jim and Joe are unprofessional and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone in Calgary, Okotoks and surrounding areas.

Company Response

Hello, my name is Jim Martin. I have been a cabinet maker for 45 years. This past year we had the priveledge and honour of doing a closet system and a series of passage doors that we built for a young engineer type person. We removed and re installed the closet system three times before we could adapt the closet structure to the opening as the floor and ceiling in the old house both dropped down about 16 inches out from each wall, thus causing unbelievable problems in adjusting doors, drawers etc. we were able to level the kick part but failed to compensate for the drop in the two ceilings. We removed and reinstalled the passage doors three times until Danis was happy, then we re lacquered same for four days in a row, we finally pleased him in terms of the passage doors. But could not placate him in terms of the closet cabinets as he kept saying that he demanded perfection, I told him that perfection was not possible as the house had settled so much and wood is not a medium that lends itself to be perfect ,but ,wood is certainly better than plastic coated sawdust. We did everything possible to please him, but could not, he kept commenting that he could not believe we were still trying. Finally, he said , if you return all the money he had paid us, that, he would let us leave. Never in all my experience have I ever met anyone I could not please, but I could not please Danis , when he gave us the final opportunity to leave, I took it but I would not return his money as we had tried to work at least a month longer than necessary. I believe in free speech, but, never is one person side of a story the absolute truth, but, rather a perception of the truth. God bless.
