Beware if you choose to proceed with Saunders Construction Management. I have never regretted anything more in my life, and I hope to stop you from experiencing the same thing. I would like to highlight that I have a 600 sqf condo that only needed a kitchen and bathroom completed. We completed all demolition, painting, shopping, etc. Here are some key issues I experienced:
1. Project started mid-April, was expected to be completed on July 1, was delayed a month by Shawn, was not complete by mid-August. All delays were Shawn's fault and no explanation was provided. We had all supplies ready by June 1.
2. Despite the cabinets being finalized by the end of April and promised installation would be complete at most 8 weeks later, we received the wrong cabinet faces, were missing pieces and installation was not complete by mid-August
3. Despite Shawn being fully aware my lease ended July 31, I had to move into the condo with my cat as the renovations continued. At this time, his subcontractor Tyler, from another company, began displaying unhinged behaviour:
3a. Tyler stated that "You need to put your cat in a kennel" because he did not like that someone was present to ensure that the cat was contained during his work. Not once was I offered any compensation to live somewhere else or money to "kennel" my cat.
3b. Tyler stated that "we were the worst customers they had ever had" because I had asked previously for some deficiencies to be fixed (e.g. missing grout for my shower tiles) and that Shawn was withholding pay. I would like to state that Shawn was paid within 2 days of each invoice I was given
3c. Tyler threatened to "smash my kitchen cupboards and invoice me 10K"
After 3c comment, I fired Shawn, changed the locks on the door and hired another contractor to complete the work. During this time and before, when any concerns were voiced to Tyler, Tyler complained that we were aggressive and Shawn defended him. We expressed frustrations with the quality of work and timeline which I think can be expected, especially when there were never any explanations provided for delays, and small projects taking weeks to complete.
I would also like to point out that the new contractor could not even fix all of the deficiencies. For example: Kitchen door handles on doors were not installed in the same location on each door, meaning that the pairs of handles are all different levels. A second layer of drywall was not added around my tub area which means the tile was not installed correctly for the tub. The underside of my cabinets are not finished with laminate and there was no plan for trim around the bottom (cabinets sit high off the counter). I requested and was quoted for my bathroom floor to be leveled and there is still major sloping. Tyler is a red-seal carpenter. Why was he doing my tiling and why did the cabinet company not install my kitchen cabinets?
I have no more characters to continue. I paid Shawn 27.6K and that didn't include materials.
