NOT impressed at all!!!

I contacted Hulk Exteriors to change my siding, eavestrough, fascia and downspouts within a very short timetable (late summer 2017) and they were very accommodating fitting me in. The initial quote was very reasonable, however my advice to everyone is before signing your contract, if you care about the materials used on your house, make sure you get to see exact samples of everything and that these details are in the contract. My downfall was I was not shown a sample of the quoted fascia, so when I discovered how flimsy it was on the 2nd day of installation, it cost me dearly to have what was already put up removed and replaced with something slightly better (which was the only other fascia available quickly, otherwise I would have insisted on the original one I asked for). I took full responsibility for that oversight, but in my defense I had verbally told (and emailed) Joe which specific fascia I wanted, on 3 different occasions! But I failed to get it noted in the contract and got something inferior, so hence my $3300 mistake (LIVE AND LEARN). The end result was ok, but the journey to complete this project left me very disappointed with this company and I would not use them again.

Update Jul-Dec 2018 – I noticed a few issues with Hulk’s job back in July of 2018 - the aluminum capping that they did around my car garage door started to buckle and that it was cut too short to fit under the weatherstripping, hence not being sealed from the elements. Also, the upper eavestrough on one side of the house is dipping in the middle. I emailed Joe immediately on July 25. He emailed me back on Jul 30 and asked me to send some pictures of the areas. I did that on Jul 31. Ever since then, I have not heard anything further from Joe, even after my many, many repeated attempts to call, email and text him over these last 4-1/2 months. I even resorted to emailing the President of the company (Lou) asking him to help me, but nothing, not even a courtesy call! Please be aware of this as these people do not seem to care about upholding the name of their company when after installation service is required. It wasn’t even 1 year since I reported the issue, so well within the warranty period. I will not be recommending them to any of my co-workers, friends or family. Instead I have told them to how this company does not give you any consideration after taking your money. I wasn’t asking them to fix a whole wall, just a few small issues and they would rather risk their reputation – wow!! Very unprofessional.

Approximate cost of services:
$16,600.00

Company Response

For any readers, please bear with our bold and honest response.

Hi Rita,
Aluminum soffit panels are less than 3 mm thick, even the 4mm thick product we ended up using the second time would not solve your issue. When you and your Husband decided to hang 6 lb (pound) Pot-light canisters from the panel every 7 ft, instead of mounting them properly to the roofline, with a licensed electrician. It does not seem suitable or respectable on your behalf to say we offer cheap products. We offer the same industry standard products everyone in southern ontario use and do not take responsibility for tampering or un realistic expectations of the product.

We also did provide you the exact 4 panel soffit from royal building products as quoted.

As for the garage door, once the garage door was capped, and you had the garage door replaced, the garage door installer caused the aluminum to kink and buckle when screwing in his weather stripping, I believe after painting it. Also, as per our e-mail notes and conversation, we advised you to not caulk the areas of capping as they were weeper holes, which is causing your water trapping.

The eavestrough in your concern was unscrewed from the metal roofing company you hired months after we completed our job. After our site visit regarding your eaves, we noticed no issue, other than that it was removed by others so the metal roofers could place the starter strip. Even though nothing was wrong, tampering of our install by others voids any warranty. You were just worried they put it up wrong and tried making us responsible to settle your worry.

Good contractors that homeowners trust and hire are the professionals. When you go against professional advice they offer, it is unreasonable to think they should accept responsibility and any unrealistic expectations you may have dreamed up, as well as warranty work and product that yourself, and other contractors touch. We always worked hard to keep you happy and have in writing how happy you are with the work, ‘after your thorough inspection of the work’ before payment.

Because of your neuroticism, arrogance and stupidity, you damage our company image from future clients in private, on a public format. I wish there was a home stars where contractors could report homeowners like you to avoid them, because I would not recommend anyone to do anything for you.

For those reading, please understand the boldness of this reply, because it is always important to hire a contractor that you can trust, who is straight, honest and who will always tell you as it is. The client/ homeowner is not always right, and shame on you Rita.
