Nightmare Home Reno

Crawford Contracting completed a large reno in our home last winter. We would not recommend using this company based on the quality of workmanship and lack of respect for our home and for us. We have since had 3 different opinions from other contractors, because we are in a position where we need to fix much of the work that was done, and the consensus from each was the same - the work is sloppy, rushed, and should never have been attempted by the individuals that completed it.

Our home was not sectioned off to ensure that dust and debris would not travel to the unaffected rooms or throughout the duct system to our furnace (plastic was initially put up in one room, but when it fell down after the first few days it was forgotten about and left open). Since the work was completed last winter, they had the furnace running full blast and the ducts and furnace are full of carpentry dust (see picture). The crew tracked dirt, cement/grout, water and salt all throughout the newly laid laminate floors and then attempted to blame us when confronted about it (Danielle was the only one who wore booties to cover her shoes).

The tile work is not level (tile to tile, they are unlevel) and the grout lines are uneven and inconsistent. The tiles are cracking and need to be replaced – in order to fix the tiles properly our entire mainfloor (kitchen cupboards, bathroom vanity, etc) needs to be removed and reset. We confronted them about cutting tiles in the kitchen (which of course travelled straight through the ducts), so instead they cut them in our laundry room, getting dust all over our contents that had been stored on the shelves above. They then proceeded to dump the tile dust and debris on our front lawn along with their assortment of cigarette butts, which we had them come and clean up once the snow melted (as it covered our garden/grass out front).

Aside from the tile work, there are countless other problems that we have had to deal with. The tiles in our tub surround need to be replaced because they are not laid, grouted, or spaced correctly. There is a layer of subfloor on the mainfloor that needed to be removed, and even though we asked them about it, they said it was fine (we now know it's not, and it's costing a fortune to fix). This means that we literally have a ramp (nearly 2 inches) leading up from our living room/dining room to meet the high tiles, which has since cracked and broken as well. The drywall mudding is disgusting, and every single spot can be seen through the new paint. Every closet doorway was not finished properly. I could literally go on and on about all of the issues, but I think the pictures speak louder.

Gordon, who was there on a daily basis was not pleasant to be around... If we had a concern, he made us feel as though we were impossible to please, instead of hearing us out as the home owners. On one occasion he backed his truck up into the side of our garage (hard enough that we heard and felt it inside the house)… when we confronted him about it he initially denied it, and then said “it wasn’t a big f-ing deal” and proceeded to call my husband inappropriate names, going on to remind us of how hard to please we had been throughout the process. On another occasion he got into a yelling match with my husband when he tried to bring up the fact that we weren’t satisfied with the tile work. There was always an excuse from Danielle as well as Gordon and it came to quality of workmanship, and near the end it didn’t matter what we said, because they would talk circles around the problem and assure us that it was fine.

This company will cut corners, plain and simple. They are quick to say they can complete work that they are not experienced and/or licensed to do (eg. tiles, plumbing, etc) and then act as though the result is satisfactory when it is not – please see our pictures for a better idea of where we are coming from. Thankfully our insurance company has decided to back us and fix all of the problems they left us with. The unnecessary stress this company caused us, and is continuing to cause us is unreal... Use this company at your own risk, but we would not recommend them because from start to finish our experience with them was a disaster.
