Custom Closet Install

I had originally hired Kannan at Closet Creators to do custom closet doors as I live in a small loft and wanted to improve the access to the space in the closet by opening it up and installing custom doors. He was very prompt with the consultation and we soon had the doors worked out. Initially he told me he could also do the inside of my closet for $700-800 in addition to the doors which were quoted at $1450. The final quote for the closet ended up being around $1500 (just the inside!). I decided to go ahead with it anyways as it was custom and should add value to my home. He did up a rough hand-drawn sketch and it looked ok so I told him to go ahead. I gave him a 50% deposit and then everything went downhill. They have a lead time of 4 weeks. The closet was installed after 6 weeks and the doors were not ready until even later due to backordered glass. I was never notified of delays and it took 2-3 days to get ahold of him every single time I wished to know when my project would be complete which was on a weekly basis past the date quoted. He told me that he made a mistake in the design and sketched an alternative that was really unattractive. Basically, the mirrors on the door had no edge protection and it was an oversight. I came up with the solution to trim the doors in aluminum to protect the glass and he asked me to pay $260 in materials costs - even though it was not my fault the design was flawed and I was the one who came up with a solution. He then agreed to install my closet early as I was living out of a suitcase. I was horrified. My $1500 closet looked worse than IKEA and was made out of basic 3/4" white melamine particleboard. The website boasts superior materials that are better than what you would find in a hardware store - but this could be found at ANY hardware store and is really inexpensive. Also, there was a lot of wasted space. I could not visualize the final product in my closet because he drew up 2 separate sketches of the components - not side by side - and did not do the 3D software generated images that are promised on the website. Had I seen these, I would not have went along with it. It was not "custom", it was like any closet kit or material you could buy at a hardware store and cut and put together yourself. The quality was very low and the closet extremely overpriced. I decided not to go ahead with the doors as he would not agree to take the closet back and now I need to replace it. Overall, once they had my deposit, the timing was way too long, customer service was very bad for not returning calls and not getting updates on why my doors were late. They took shortcuts and did not go to the lengths on the website to help me visualize my new closet. Quality is poor as the materials used are inexpensive and not "superior" as quoted on the company's website. I never received an answer on the return of my closet so I will not work with them again and I hope that others do not have to go through the same ordeal or waste their money on this overpriced and glorified "custom" closet company.

Approximate cost of services:
$1,500.00
What could this company do to improve their services?
A satisfaction guarantee and following through with what is offered on the website instead of taking short-cuts.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Not hire Closet Creators - get a carpenter in who can actually do custom work with quality materials - or go to that big Swedish store - your closet will be nicer and you won't feel that you were robbed.
