Terrible installation, no customer service

This company is a disaster from beginning to end. We engaged Bytown to put up a fence into our backyard because our neighbour had contracted them to do the back fence. The estimator assured us it could be scheduled at the same time, and described how certain gaps between a neighbour's fence would be addressed. Not only did the install not happen when they said it was going to (they forgot to link the two projects), they sent the person who was most likely Ottawa's worst installer.

This guy left screws, scrap metal and dirt all over our neighbour's property. He leaned materials against the side of her house. He didn't always show up when he said he would, and when he did he claimed that the PVC parts would crack because it was too cold to install them (Bytown basically sent him to install not telling us that we'd end up with a cracked product). We ended up having to heat our garage for him so he could get the work done. He made holes in the fence and didn't plug them; put up pieces that were stained with rust; used different screws in the same hinge.

By the spring, the gate fell apart, the latch fell off and our neighbour's gate wouldn't open anymore. We emailed Ned multiple times. Nothing. Finally, my spouse showed up in person and Ned couldn't remember what any of the issues were. They finally sent someone to fix the fence in September (!!!!), but only addressed a few of the issues with our fence. They had a half-assed solution for our neighbour's gate.

This whole debacle has negatively affected our relationship with our neighbour. And we paid thousands of dollars for a fence that was poorly installed. Their office is unhelpful. Do yourself a favour and pick any other fence company except this one.

Buliding a reputation of inferiority

I had my fence installed by Bytown back in 2011 and for the first couple of years, it was fine. Then we had a bad winter and many of the posts heaved up, happens almost every spring now. I called in reporting the posts for my two gates because the latches were no longer aligned and I couldn’t open my two gates. I have contacted them countless times over the past few years and as mentioned by others, it is very difficult to get after warranty service in a timely manner. It doesn't matter when you call, early spring, they will tell you that the ground is still frozen. Call in June and they may send someone in the fall or not at all. Or they say that they are really busy and need to hire more people.

Last fall, I called in again (one gate was OK and the other wasn’t completely off) and I was told that they would schedule me in. No one came last fall. Early May, I called twice and I kept getting told that someone would call me back. Here we are in July now and I still wasn’t able to open my gate so I ended up prying the latch bar with a screwdriver to get it open. As you can see in the pics, the latch has been moved many times already. I will let you imagine what the rest of the fence looks like. Luckily the latch will cover up most of the holes and I use beige caulking to fill the ones I can see. I think I have adjusted the latches myself twice now on this gate. I also keep their sign up in the hopes that someone will see how bad their fence looks now and not call them. The title of this review is the opposite of what is on their sign.

The fence that was never built

We signed a contract to have a shared fence built in May 2018. We were initially given a build date of the week of August 6th. We heard back from "Ned" the scheduler the week before the start date saying that it would be delayed for a week. They the put us in touch with the sub-contractor directly. (All of their work is sub-contracted). After three weeks of additional delays by the sub-contractor and then him not returning my calls, I called the Bytown office directly. After explaining the situation, the receptionist had the nerve to ask, "Well, what do you want me to do?" I told her that I wanted my fence installed, so she left my contact information for Ned. After a week of my neighbour and I trying to get in touch with him, I sent an email directly to him and the sub-contractor emailed me within a couple of hours explaining that he hadn't been able to do the work and assumed that Bytown had given the job to another contractor. He then arrived the next day, tore my fence down and installed posts, promising me that the work would be done by Wednesday that week. Wednesday turned into "the end of the week." That was three weeks ago. The posts that were installed were set next to the old footings which they didn't remove. The post that should be directly against my back fence, which is chain link, is more than a foot away from it. I continue to get the run around from the contractor about when he'll be back to finish the work. This company is awful to deal with. They are basically a call centre that has none of their own workers. Once they contract your work out they seem to wash their hands of responsibility but are more than happy to get paid. I am beyond disgusted. I just wanted a fence and with up to 10 centimeters of snow in the forecast it's not looking like this will happen. On top of that, my back and side yards have been left as construction zones so my kids can't even go outside to play.

Bytown not honoring warranty

My family had a metal and glass deck railing installed by bytown. Company came to look at chipping and confirmed it was under warranty and full replacement would happen. That was a year ago. Since then we send them emails every couple of weeks and they keep saying they'll "get around to it". Phone calls aren't being returned at all. Over a year of brush offs for a very expensive installation which they confirmed was to be fully replaced. Company representative: contact me to uphold your commitment. Shocking.

Vinyl Fence

Installation of 70 feet of Vinyl Fence and gate. Excellent job done. Crew was polite and courteous. Work was done as stated in contract and cleanup was excellent. Even wiped dirt of the vinyl once the job was completed. We were fortunate on the crew provided as not all installation crews are as good.

Cedar fence installed November 2017

Although the final install looks good the final dealings with the firms owner brings to light how not to treat your clients. The fence is on a shared property line and during erection Bytown approached my neighbour about changes but did not take time to review these with me. I received the bill on a Monday in the mailbox. Reviewed it and the work on the weekend and noted the added costs. Called up the salesman and asked why these added costs. He did not know but would reach out to the owner. At that time I happened to check my online credit card statement to find that bytown had deducted the payment on my credit card 2 days after dropping off the invoice ( terms 30 days to pay) without my consent. As to the added costs although they are not much it turns out I was charged for pumping water out of the auger holes as it rained the previous night. After further back and forth I was told that it took a few hours as their equipment broke and they had to buy a new pump. Basically they were charging us for the cost to replace the pump. In the end the owner did not offer anything or provide anything positive to say. More like I got your money not really worried about my reputation. Thus if you chose to use their services do not pay with a credit card. Do it by check. Be vigilant to nickel and diving tactics to increase the overall cost.

iron fence

This was part of a larger back yard landscaping project that included the installation of a pool, shed, and patio. In addition to the installation of the iron pool enclosure fence, it included removal (and eventual reinstallation) of an existing PVC yard enclosure to allow contractors access to the yard to do the work. The iron fence includes a large, 2-panel 8' gate that maximizes access to the pool area. Posts were installed in-ground and bolted to patio capstone. The installers were friendly and knowledgeable, and offered their advice and suggestions on the details of the install, which was appreciated. The work was done on time and on budget, and the end product looks better than we hoped it would. I'll use Bytown again and would recommend them to others.

Warranty Work is Non Existant So Far

I had Bytown install a large vinyl fence in my yard in 2007. I was told it was warrantied for 20 years. During installation they cut through an underground power line disrupting power to my house. They also hand dug several post holes, (at a premium cost), to avoid hitting other utilities. They had a lot of difficulty installing one particular post due to an obstruction in the ground and shortened the post length.

For nine winters I have watched the post heave and almost spectate from the adjoining fence section. The fence section broke off the post this past winter.

I called Bytown and they confirmed the warranty was still in effect and would be in touch. They didn't return calls and I let it slide until September. With the thought of another winter coming I have called them frequently for two months now looking for resolution. After two months of promises they still haven't looked at or fixed the problem.

Needless to say, I would not recommend this company based on their poor warranty performance.
