J. Murphy's Contracting

In late Fall 2023 we decided to do our long-awaited home renovation. Our home was built in the early 90s and required a complete interior makeover.
We checked out many contractor reviews and came across J. Murphys Contracting Inc., an established and reputable Maple Ridge company that appeared to meet our needs for the project.
We contacted James and found him to very friendly and helpful, answering our many questions.
We asked James for a quote along with a number of other contractors. James quote was the best by far and so we accepted it and hired him to do the job.
James provided us with a written contract and detailed quote covering all the work and cost as well as clear terms for extras. The work was divided up into milestones with payment to be made after completion of each milestone. We ended up doing many extras, some very significant. All of the work, including the extras, was done in accordance with this paperwork. We are very pleased with this aspect of the job.
We found James to be very responsive to questions and any concerns that we had. In most cases we received a response the same day.
The work started April 1, 2024, with an estimated timeline for us to return to our home in early July. The work progressed in accordance with this timeline even though we added many extras including some very significant ones. There were some things to finish up after our return to our home which were largely taken care of in July. In view of our very good experience with James and his team inside our home, we decided to completely redo the outside of our home as well, which was completed by early September. We are very pleased with the timeline for all the work that James and his team did for us.
We are very pleased with James team including his qualified and certified subcontractors and staff. We must single out for special mention his site manager, Joe, who we worked with the most. Joe is a highly experienced and exceptional tradesperson and site manager who was a pleasure to work with, really helped us make good decisions about extras and who worked tirelessly to ensure that we were happy with everything that was done.
We are very happy with quality of the materials used for the job and the workmanship of James and his team. We attach some before and after pictures of the kitchen.
We ended up doing a lot more and spending considerably more than initially planned for our renovation project, but we do not regret these decisions and feel that we received very good value from James and this team.

I asked James for help when the vinyl on my deck split open and (completely independently) one of the stairs leading up to the deck collapsed after rotting through. He was punctual, coming over to look at what needed to be done and coordinating with the work crews, and stayed in contact to ensure that I was happy with all the work being done. Even after the job was finished, James helped me by answering some unrelated questions about work I needed done.

I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending James to anyone who needs work done on their house; if he can't help you himself, he'll put you in touch with someone else who can.

James completed an ensuite reno for me at my old house and did a fantastic job, so when I moved, I called him again. This time it was a major reno - whole basement reno with new basement suite, new flooring, new master bedroom and ensuite, new paint and doors throughout. James did not disappoint. The results are amazing. His crew is professional, thorough and caring. There were a lot of hiccups because the house was old and had a lot of issues including mould and fire hazards. It was starting to look like a money pit but James took care of all of it. I felt completely confident that the job would get done properly. The only real work I had to do was choose materials and colours. James and his crew did everything else. And the level of care carried through to the very last touch up. I highly recommend him and will definitely be hiring him again.

I hired J Murphy's Contracting to complete a bathroom renovation for me. James and his crew were very professional and hardworking. James had great communication with me and my husband through the whole process and was extremely professional. All the workers were respectful and understanding especially during this time. We hired James to do a major renovation of our master bathroom in August 2019. The current bathroom was small and dated, and generally inadequate for our family so we wanted to enlarge it and relocate all the plumbing fixtures. It was a total redo.

We're quite happy with the end result. It's still not a very big bathroom, but the space is well utilized and the bathroom is clean, modern and functional.

As for our experiences with James and his crew:

- crew kept the mess to a minimum
- James gave us access to his substantial discount at local suppliers
- the job took about as long as expected, without any major delays
- some disagreements about what constitutes extra work

Although there were some tense communications near the end, looking back it's water under the bridge. The end result is good, and that's what we'll remember.

With two boys who are finally old enough to not want to destroy every shred of grass, deck and fence in sight, we decided that it was time to make our backyard into a space that my husband and I can enjoy now. Having virtually no experience in design or landscaping, we relied heavily on James' expertise and that was the best decision we made. We could tell that he really loved working on the landscaping piece (he really knows his plants!) and he came up with some great solutions for us around how to structure the new deck and stairs. He kept us on track, on budget and when he said ‘my guys will be there’, they were…every time.

Now, when I look out onto our backyard I am no longer silently sobbing into my coffee mug at the sight of a child-created war zone - I am crying tears of joy.

(No photos yet as we are STILL waiting for all of our new patio furniture to arrive…a month later than quoted but we will upload them when it’s all done. James - maybe you should get into the patio furniture business too?!)

Recommended by neighbours, we turned the renovation of three bathrooms over to James and his very capable crew. Our project is ongoing but we are very pleased with the quality of the workmanship to date. Also, minor problems have been dealt with professionally and quickly.

We wanted to update our bathroom by removing the bathe and replacing it with a shower. you don't realize how much goes into the whole process but the results speak for themselves. We are so glad we chose James to do our reno, hard working professional who knows this business like the back of his hand. Forget all these other contractors who give you empty promises. J Murphys are the ones to trust we totally recommend them.

I am very very happy with the work James and his crew did on my bathroom. They were punctual, skilled and left the job site very clean. The work done was worth every dollar and the bathroom is more than what I expected. What a professional company and the final payment was close to the estimate.
